The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/mkelly782_thailand-uae-iran-ugcPost-7437403208349601792-OTB-\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAACT9L64BQS3XU8pGoZ1U9QlaZo8LzQJ9_fc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first vessel<\/a> \u2014 Thailand flagged \u2013\u2013 was hit some 25 nautical miles (nm) northwest of Ras al Khaimah, while <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/uk_mto\/status\/2031632623252975907?s=46&amp;t=joiBqcgDVUSTYywZ4_DCaA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the second<\/a> was hit some 50 nm northwest of Dubai. Investigations are currently underway to assess the extent of the damage to both ships, but all crew members are safe. The third \u2014 a Japanese container ship \u2014 was hit some 11 nm north of Oman, resulting in a fire onboard and all crew members being evacuated from the vessel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>But, trade flows haven't stopped entirely \u2014 Iran is still reportedly exporting oil to China and India<\/strong>, with \u201cat least nine sanctioned tankers operating in or around the Strait of Hormuz in the past 24hrs,\u201d maritime risk analyst Martin Kelly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/mkelly782_thailand-uae-iran-ugcPost-7437403208349601792-OTB-\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAACT9L64BQS3XU8pGoZ1U9QlaZo8LzQJ9_fc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> on LinkedIn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Let\u2019s zoom out:<\/strong> These incidents are part of a surge in regional maritime hostilities following US and Israeli strikes on Iran last week. Overall, some 17 incidents \u2014 13 of which were attacks \u2014 impacting vessels operating in and around the Arabian Gulf occurred since the escalation. Previously, the waterway <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusmedia.com\/en\/news-and-insights\/latest-market-news\/2799373-two-vessels-attacked-in-proximity-of-strait-of-hormuz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">handled a daily transit<\/a> of 14 mn barrels of crude and 6 mn barrels of refined products. With vessels now being hit and crews evacuated, the risk premium has transitioned into a no-go reality for many operators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Why this matters:<\/strong> With hundreds of ships now anchored around Hormuz, the disruption to Middle East oil exports has moved from a temporary shock to a structural paralysis. Saudi Aramco has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/consequences-global-oil-markets-could-be-catastrophic-if-hormuz-closure-2026-03-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already warned<\/a> of \u201ccatastrophic consequences\u201d for global markets if this remains unresolved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Conflict surcharges <\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong><strong> already <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/destineoz_datadispatch-redsea-persiangulf-ugcPost-7437413742558064640-Tx-F?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAACT9L64BQS3XU8pGoZ1U9QlaZo8LzQJ9_fc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ranging between<\/a><\/strong><strong> USD 2k and USD 3.3k per <\/strong><strong>TEU<\/strong> <strong>\u2014 will continue to inch up <\/strong>the longer the high-risk potential persists. However, in the case of Hormuz, the mounting addons go beyond the risk premiums and include additional fuel costs. Emergency fuel surcharges are now being quoted on top of risk premiums, including CMA CGM\u2019s USD 180 container surcharge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Let\u2019s run through the contingency plans so far<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The US pedaled back on its proposed <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/issues\/hormuz-matters-for-more-than-oil-a-third-of-global-fertilizer-supply-at-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plan to safeguard vessel transits<\/a><\/strong> <strong> through the strait <\/strong>\u2014 fulfilling shipping analysts' expectations. The US Navy has refused near-daily requests from the shipping industry to provide military escorts through Hormuz for the time being, on the basis that the \u201crisk of attack is too high for now,\u201d three shipping industry sources told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/us-navy-tells-shipping-industry-hormuz-escorts-not-possible-now-2026-03-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>So who could secure the strait? <\/strong>\u201cNeither France, the US, an international coalition, or anybody is in a position to secure the \u2060Strait of Hormuz,\u201d European Institute for Studies on the Middle East and North Africa director Adel Bakawan <a href=\"https:\/\/english.almayadeen.net\/news\/politics\/us-navy-unable-to-escort-ships-through-strait-of-hormuz--rep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>For now, the focus is on ins. rather than escorts.<\/strong> The UK is working with its allies on a range of potential options to support commercial shipping through the strait, PM Keir Starmer\u2019s spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/britain-working-with-allies-support-shipping-through-strait-hormuz-2026-03-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. For now, the government is liaising with Lloyd\u2019s of London to guarantee \u201cappropriate ins. cover [is] available to operators,\u201d including cover for war, revolution, and terrorism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Are there any workarounds?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Adnoc <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-11\/uae-oil-partners-told-to-pick-up-barrels-from-port-behind-hormuz?srnd=phx-industries-energy&amp;embedded-checkout=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has instructed<\/a><\/strong><strong> its onshore partners to collect their Murban crude from the port of <\/strong><strong>Jebel Dhanna <\/strong>in the Gulf just beyond Hormuz. At least two of the six equity holders of Adnoc\u2019s onshore output were told their March supply must be picked up from this terminal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The move comes as some shipowners are <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-11\/tankers-shun-fujairah-freeing-up-oil-for-sale-at-higher-prices?srnd=phx-industries-energy&amp;embedded-checkout=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increasingly avoiding<\/a><\/strong> <strong> Fujairah <\/strong>\u2014 the UAE's primary export hub outside the Arabian Gulf \u2014 due to reported missile threats. The shipowners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-11\/tankers-shun-fujairah-freeing-up-oil-for-sale-at-higher-prices?srnd=phx-industries-energy&amp;embedded-checkout=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">avoiding<\/a> Fujairah have cancelled their shipments, a move that should allow producers to resell and upmark their cargos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The disruption is spreading beyond oil: <\/strong>Both DP World and AD Ports <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/03\/11\/today-is-the-tanker-market-now-pricing-risk-more-than-cargoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enacted temporary contingency arrangements<\/a> to allow customers to reroute import containers from Khorfakkan and Fujairah ports to Dubai\u2019s Jebel Ali via bonded road transit earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>A forced reversal of strategy?<\/strong> The UAE spent years building infrastructure to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, but now missile threats at Fujairah are forcing volumes back into the Gulf. While redirecting shipments to Jebel Dhanna allows Adnoc to potentially resell canceled cargoes at higher prices, it adds a layer of complexity for equity holders who now have to navigate vessels through a high-risk zone to reach Jebel Dhanna.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The move to Jebel Dhanna will be a litmus test for shipowner appetite.<\/strong> We will be looking at whether tankers are actually willing to move past the strait to reach the new pickup point or if this simply results in further stranded volumes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>One safer outlet remains: <\/strong>Oman\u2019s Salalah port remains a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/03\/11\/today-is-the-tanker-market-now-pricing-risk-more-than-cargoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">key<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/03\/11\/today-is-the-tanker-market-now-pricing-risk-more-than-cargoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">safe transshipment hub<\/a> as it sits outside the strait \u2014 Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd continue to call at Salalah despite dropping Jebel Ali.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The aviation sector is also reeling<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Operations at DXB persist despite a near-hit from drones. <\/strong>Two drones fell near Dubai International Airport (DXB), injuring four, while traffic continues \u201coperating as normal,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DXBMediaOffice\/status\/2031635783304753169\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post on X<\/a>.
