The project, built in cooperation with China Railway Construction, will serve iron ore movements from the China-backed Gara Djebilet mine to the steel production hub owned by Turkey\u2019s steel producer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tosyali-algerie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tosyali<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>What we know:<\/strong> Gara Djebilet\u2019s first processing unit is on track to launch by the end of April 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.echoroukonline.com\/%D8%BA%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A7-%D8%AC%D8%A8%D9%8A%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%B7%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%82-%D8%A3%D9%88%D9%84-%D8%AA%D8%AC%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%A9-%D8%B9%D9%85%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%84%D9%82%D8%B7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeting<\/a> a yearly output of 4 mn tons, and the rail link is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2025\/02\/18\/updates-on-aviation-rail-and-storage-from-qatar-algeria-and-the-uae\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slated<\/a> to run 10 trains a day once fully operational. The Algerian government is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/projects\/mining\/algeria-launches-test-run-on-950-km-bechar-tindouf-gara-djebilet-railway-afjrq6ol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working towards<\/a> establishing new iron processing plants in Tindouf, B\u00e9char, and Naama, along the new rail link.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Why it matter<\/strong><strong>s? It could hit other global players. <\/strong>Australia and Brazil together <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/centers\/national-minerals-information-center\/iron-ore-statistics-and-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dominate<\/a> global iron ore exports \u2013\u2013 each around one-third. Algeria won\u2019t break the duopoly on volume tomorrow, but it can change the margin game for the EU-MENA basin by adding a Mediterranean option that shortens the logistics chain and tightens delivery windows.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>But why the EU market in particular? <\/strong>The rail integration means less carbon footprint for Algeria\u2019s inland iron ore logistics. Coupled with Algeria\u2019s proximity to European markets and Tosyali\u2019s green steel production in northern Algeria, the country\u2019s iron and steel production might develop a competitive edge in light of the EU\u2019s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Background: <\/strong>The rail project is part of Algeria\u2019s push to diversify its economy and localize the processing of natural resources into higher-value finished products rather than exporting them in raw form. The country is working on the Eastern Mining Railway \u2014 another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/anesrif.dz\/posts\/pfbid02vmDLP8BH7acgS51giXBev93pcxGVkzG2uRC7T6qqUUW3NeRRKm2xsoYuMkKgyjCLl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">422 km<\/a> rail link connecting its phosphate-rich areas in the east, such as the Blad El Hadba phosphate mine in Tebessa, to Annaba Port. The project follows the same playbook as its western counterpart, integrating mine-industrial-port infrastructure <a href=\"https:\/\/al24news.dz\/en\/annaba-ports-mineral-dock-gateway-for-algerias-phosphate-fertilizer-exports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to streamline<\/a> the logistics of phosphate
