The move is intended to ensure energy flows, but has been met with skepticism and confusion by global shipowners and insurers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The<\/strong> <strong>US deployed <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-06\/us-launches-20-billion-reinsurance-plan-to-ease-gulf-oil-trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a maritime reinsurance initiative<\/a><\/strong><strong> \u2013\u2013 including war risk \u2013\u2013 which will <\/strong><strong>insure losses of up to USD 20 bn \u201con a rolling basis<\/strong><strong>\u201d on vessels<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfc.gov\/media\/press-releases\/dfc-announces-20b-plan-maritime-reinsurance-gulf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> released on Friday<strong>. <\/strong>The move aims to restabilize the flow of energy and commercial trade in the Gulf as oil prices surge. For now, the coverage will focus on hull, machinery, and cargo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Let\u2019s break it down:<\/strong> The owners of ships currently stuck in the Arabian Gulf have said that naval escorts would not persuade them to transit while combat operations continue. Protecting the high volume of tankers transiting the region is viewed as impractical, as it would require a massive deployment of warships and military assets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Why this matters<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Where do we stand<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong> War risk premiums for vessels transiting the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden surged \u2013\u2013 hitting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/maritime-insurance-premiums-surge-iran-conflict-widens-2026-03-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as much as 1000%<\/a> in some cases. With at least nine ships already damaged, tension remains high and total losses from the damaged vessels are forecasted to be at USD 1.75 bn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The new ins. rate of 3% would suggest a hull war risk premium of around USD 7.5 mn<\/strong> \u2013\u2013 up some <a href=\"http:\/\/jefferies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">0.25% or USD 625k<\/a>, before the conflict launched last week, analysts at Jefferies estimate. While other analysts set the ratings between 1% and 1.5% of vessel value, as the \u201crate spectrum is wide and varied depending on many factors, including whether the vessel is east or west of the Hormuz chokepoint,\u201d UK-based firm Marsh VP Dylan Mortimer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/maritime-insurance-premiums-surge-iran-conflict-widens-2026-03-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Maritime specialists remain skeptical<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>\u201cNo one in the Gulf has any details on how [Trump\u2019s] plan will work,\u201d Amena Bakr, Kpler head energy research at data and analytics wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Amena__Bakr\/status\/2029124753441865774\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">X<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/world\/live-news\/iran-war-us-israel-trump-03-04-26?post-id=cmmc14hab001s3b6tn5corljc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noting<\/a> that, \u201cOur experts don\u2019t think Trump\u2019s vessel escort idea will work as vessels will be heavily exposed to Iranian missiles. And even if they do manage to escort the vessels the cost will be too high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Shipbrokers aren\u2019t convinced:<\/strong> \"Ins. doesn't make the hull impervious to rockets,\" shipbroker Odin head petroleum and tanker analyst Alpman Ilker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusmedia.com\/de\/news-and-insights\/latest-market-news\/2796509-us-ship-insurance-not-enough-for-hormuz-sources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \"Ins. may incentivize a few to start transiting but the Iranians will likely attack and then traffic will again cease transit.\"<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>And neither are shipping associations:<\/strong> \u201cProviding protection for all tankers operating in areas currently threatened by Iran is unrealistic as this would require a very high number of warships and other military assets,\u201d Bimco <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusmedia.com\/de\/news-and-insights\/latest-market-news\/2796509-us-ship-insurance-not-enough-for-hormuz-sources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>In the ins. <\/strong><strong>market, coverage<\/strong><strong> remains available \u2014 for now: <\/strong>The London ins. market is \u201cwilling and able,\u201d to cover ships looking to transit the strait, broker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-05\/war-cover-is-available-for-ships-crossing-hormuz-broker-says?embedded-checkout=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arthur J Gallagher &amp; Co<\/a> and Lloyd\u2019s Market Association <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lloydslist.com\/LL1156549\/US-launches-$20bn-reinsurance-facility-for-Gulf-shipping\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> on Thursday.
