Second, a revived PIA could strengthen competition with Gulf carriers for the EU-Pakistan travel corridor, which serves some 1.4 mn Pakistanis living in Europe and the UK, especially in light of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/european-aviation-safety-agency-lifts-pakistan-airlines-ban-minister-says-2024-11-29\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a> and the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pakistan-international-airlines-uk-be89eaec4aab6c43217e0ff3d5c454b7\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">UK<\/a> ending travel restrictions for Pakistan-bound flights. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ALSO- The proposed <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/bd93da47-8084-4d7e-8df4-e6fcdd2e30df\/beijing-threatens-to-obstruct-panama-port-sale-%2B-china%25e2%2580%2599s-shipbuilding-orders-take-a-hit\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 23 bn sale<\/a><\/strong><strong> of CK Hutchison\u2019s global port portfolio to a <\/strong><strong>BlackRock-led consortium has entered a high-stakes standoff, <\/strong>as China\u2019s state-owned Cosco <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/76768978-0ca7-4600-bc8f-aeb033aeb993\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">demands a majority stake<\/a> in the transaction. While the deal was initially hailed by the Trump administration as a strategic victory to \"reclaim\" the Panama Canal from Chinese influence, Beijing has retaliated by weaponizing its merger review process to force a pro-China realignment. That would expand the authority\u2019s mandate beyond agriculture and reclamation into cross-border trade infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ALSO FROM EGYPT- <\/strong><strong>The Transport Ministry is piloting a new auction model for Kom Abu Radi dry <\/strong><strong>port<\/strong>, with a closed-envelope auction system launched by the General Authority of Land and Dry Ports for the construction and operation of the project, sources with knowledge of the matter tell EnterpriseAM. The deadline for opening technical envelopes has been set for April 2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This is the first practical application of the ministry\u2019s move away from the traditional <\/strong><strong>tender system<\/strong> \u2014 which prioritized the lowest cost of implementation\u2014toward an auction-style model. The new mechanism is designed to secure the highest operating return for the state and the fastest execution timeline, moving away from bureaucratic structures to attract faster foreign and local direct investment, our sources tell us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Market watch- <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Balti<\/strong><strong>c<\/strong><strong> index downward streak continues: <\/strong>The Baltic Exchange\u2019s dry bulk sea freight index \u2014 which tracks rates for the capesize, panamax, and supramax vessel segments \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/baltic\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/baltic\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">fell 0.6%<\/a> to 1,877 points on Tuesday. The capesize slipped 0.5% to 3,319, while the panamax index was up 0.1% to 1,267 points, while the smaller supramax index eased by 18 points to 1,144.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Data point- <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>13 jets \u2014 <\/strong><strong>that\u2019s <\/strong><strong>the deliveries that<\/strong> <strong>China\u2019s<\/strong><strong> Planemaker Comac <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-12-23\/china-s-comac-on-track-to-miss-c919-delivery-target-by-half\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">made<\/a><\/strong><strong> this year <\/strong><strong>for its flagship narrow-body model C919<\/strong>, as of 22 December 2025. The figure means that Comac is missing its target of 25 deliveries in 2025 \u2014 an already revised-down target from 75 jets. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Made in China but still needs the West:<\/strong> Comac\u2019s failed year-end delivery is a direct casualty of geopolitics. Despite being branded a made-in-China aircraft, the C919 remains deeply <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/boards-policy-regulation\/us-suspends-sales-some-us-technologies-chinas-airplane-maker-comac-new-york-2025-05-29\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">dependent on Western supply chains<\/a>, including for critical components like the LEAP-1C engines used in the C919 model.
