Shipowners<\/strong> coalition supports IMO amid growing division <\/strong>over decarbonization rules: <\/strong>Leading shipowner associations \u2014 representing a quarter of the world\u2019s tonnage \u2014 came together to back the industry\u2019s Net-Zero Framework<\/a> (NZF), which is set for a vote at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) next week<\/a>, according to a statement seen by Lloyd\u2019s List<\/a>. Backers include shipping associations from Japan, Belgium, the Netherlands, Singapore, the UK, Norway, and Denmark.<\/p>\n

The pitch: <\/strong>The group endorsed the NZF, describing the global regulation as the industry\u2019s best chance at decarbonization, adding that the new policy would \u201cstrengthen the business case for cutting emissions and investing in sustainable energy, fuels and technology.\u201d The group warned that the alternative to a unified global policy would be a \u201ccomplicated and inefficient patchwork of national and regional regulatory frameworks.\u201d <\/p>\n

The endorsement comes in response to growing public opposition to the NZF from a <\/strong>separate group of shipowners<\/strong>, which formally expressed its opposition last month. The opposition bloc said they believe the NZF will not ensure effective decarbonization or \u201ca level-playing field,\u201d arguing that it fails to \u201cincentivise investment in known and available transition technologies\u201d and favors \u201cunproven tech and fuels.\u201d Opponents include Saudi\u2019s Bahri, Greece\u2019s Angelicoussis Group and GasLog, US-based Capital Group, South Korea\u2019s Hanwha Shipping, and Norway-based Stolt Tankers.<\/p>\n

On the cards:<\/strong> The framework will introduce a credit trading scheme for low-emission vessels, as well as two escalating emissions targets requiring gradual cuts to ships\u2019 fuel carbon intensity. In turn, progressive levies will be imposed on those who fail to meet either of the targets, with the proceeds funneled into the IMO\u2019s Net-Zero Fund to support investments in decarbonization technologies and initiatives. If ratified, these changes will take effect by 2027<\/a> and will apply to ships over 5k gross tons, covering 85% of international shipping emissions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
