In today\u2019s issue, we take a look at the results of the World Bank-led performance index for ports \u2014 and it appears that Egypt\u2019s Port Said port had an excellent 2024. Marsa Maroc\u2019s earnings for 1H are also officially out \u2014 and they\u2019re looking good. But first, an update on the possible logistics impact of the US federal government shutdown\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG LOGISTICS STORY- <\/strong><strong>Airlines <\/strong><strong>are bracing for slowed operations at US airports<\/strong>, after the US federal government entered a shutdown starting today. Air traffic and security systems at airports \u201cmay need to slow down, reducing efficiency\u201d if the shutdown goes ahead, Airlines for America (A4A), a trade association representing US carriers, warned hours before the shutdown began. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Aviation disruptions are expected to be limited if the shutdown is short-lived. <\/strong>However, a prolonged shutdown \u2014 similar to the 2018-2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/business\/flights-snarled-at-us-east-coast-airports-as-controllers-call-in-sick-idUSKCN1PJ1US\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">35-day shutdown<\/a>, which cost the country <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/politics\/longest-government-shutdown-vis\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">c.USD 3 bn<\/a> in lost GDP \u2014 could lead to wider disruptions as workers become wary of not getting paid. Hundreds of flights in New York and Philadelphia airports were canceled back then after air traffic controllers and security workers called in sick, in protest against not receiving their salaries. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why a government shutdown? <\/strong>The US government is frequently <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/government-shutdown-2025-what-happens\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">prone to shutdowns<\/a> whenever Congress fails to pass funding bills for government agencies, forcing a halt in services and paychecks for federal workers. The US has seen 18 shutdowns since 1980 \u2014 with the latest and longest one beginning in 2018 before concluding in January 2019.
