Good morning, friends. <\/strong>It\u2019s another packed issue today, with a lot of trade and tariff updates from the region and around the world. We also have the latest on Egypt\u2019s rail and export-bound green hydrogen projects. But first, an update on the US-China trade war\u2026<\/p>\n

THE BIG LOGISTICS STORY- US moves through with China tariff hike: <\/strong>The US President Donald Trump followed through with his threat of a 104% tariff on Chinese goods, triggering a market sell-off. The tariff, which reaches up to 120% for some goods, pushed stock losses to the USD 10 tn mark, with the S&P 500 experiencing a sharp swing \u2014 despite gaining some 4% earlier in the day \u2014 to end the day 1.6% down. The index is now down 18.9% \u2014 dangerously close to the 20% mark defining a bear market. <\/p>\n

Wait, why had markets rallied earlier? <\/strong>Markets had reacted positively to signs that Trump is open to negotiations with some countries over the tariffs, with the administration scheduling talks with South Korea and Japan, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni due to visit the US next week. <\/p>\n

WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/p>\n

<\/a>#1- Egypt entered into a five-year leasing agreement with Germany to charter an LNG <\/strong>regasification vessel<\/strong>, two sources with knowledge of the matter told EnterpriseAM. Germany \u2014 which reportedly has a charter contract for the vessel \u2014 Energos Power \u2014 will lease the vessel to Egypt at an estimated cost of USD 80 mn per year to provide 500 mn cubic feet of gasification capacity per day. The vessel is set to dock at Ain Sokhna port from June this year until 2032. <\/p>\n

The government is preparing for a surge in demand over the summer months<\/strong>, which has led the country to target importing 155-160 shipments of LNG<\/a> this year to close the gap between demand and supply. Egypt reportedly needs around 6.2 bn cubic feet per day (bcf\/d), but domestic production currently only contributes 4.4 bcf\/d, increasing the need for energy imports.<\/p>\n

IN OTHER NEWS FROM EGYPT- The Senate advances a study aimed at reforming Egypt\u2019s customs system<\/strong>, according to a statement<\/a> from the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry. The study \u2014 which involves proposed amendments to the Customs Law \u2014 has been approved by the Senate and forwarded to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for approval. <\/p>\n

Standardization + automation<\/strong>: The commonsense plan \u2014 prepared by Sen. Mohamed Abou<\/a>Ghaly<\/a> to expedite customs clearance and clamp down on smuggling \u2014 involves standardizing customs procedures across all ports, automating price verification systems so that estimated values for imported goods are accurately matched with real market prices. The plan proposes implementing a secure system for tracking goods movement without human intervention, among other changes.<\/p>\n

Over two phases: <\/strong>The reforms will be brought to life in two phases. The first will see the implementation of regulations aimed at improving pre-clearance procedures and employing specialized committees, while the second will focus on executive regulations that establish binding controls.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/strong>#2- UAE, GCC firms \u2014 especially those with supply chains linked to Asia \u2014 could be in <\/strong>for weaker margins on the back of Trump\u2019s tariffs, <\/strong>analysts and economists with expertise in the region told Zawya. While the GCC\u2019s exposure to the impact of Trump\u2019s tariffs is limited given the region\u2019s limited exports to the US, ensuing global volatility, weaker demand, and delayed investments are expected to weigh on companies\u2019 2Q earnings performance, Zawya reports. <\/p>\n

What they said:<\/strong> \u201cThe uncertainty surrounding the tariffs and their potential impact on global trade could lead to continued market volatility over the next 2-3 months,\u201d said Hamza Dweik, head of trading at Saxo Bank MENA. Analysts also flagged the risk of economic instability and strain on fiscal budgets from falling oil prices, capital outflows, and tighter fiscal conditions if trade tensions persist.<\/p>\n

Regional IPO activity may also slow amid market instability<\/strong>, Dweik said. Economic diversification projects reliant on oil revenues could also take a hit, Pepperstone\u2019s Research Strategist Ahmad Assiri added.<\/p>\n

<\/a>IN OTHER TARIFFS IMPACT NEWS- The aviation industry worldwide <\/strong>is bracing for costs hike as the Trump tariff put the aviation industry in \u201cunc<\/strong>harted territory,\u201d<\/strong> Emirates President Tim Clark said in a CNBC interview (watch, runtime: 6:44<\/a>). \u201cIt\u2019s uncharted because it involves a measure of reset to a level that the global economy probably hasn\u2019t seen since the financial crisis of 2008-2009,\u201d Clark said, referring to growing pressures on carriers and aviation supply chain issues. In the short-term, demand might weaken slightly, though travel will remain resilient, he added. Emirates, as one of the world\u2019s largest international carriers, will feel the ripple effects, but it will be able to ride the wave thanks to its global reach and strong business model, Clark said. <\/p>\n

MARKET WATCH- <\/p>\n

#1-<\/strong> Oil prices fell to a four-year low this morning after the US moved ahead with its tariff <\/strong>hike on Chin<\/strong>ese products, <\/strong>Reuters<\/a> reports. Brent crude futures dipped by USD 2.38 to USD 60.44 a barrel, while the US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped by USD 2.46 to reach USD 57.12 a barrel by 04.23 GMT. <\/p>\n

#2- Bal<\/strong>tic index on a<\/strong> downward spiral:<\/strong> The Baltic Exchange\u2019s dry bulk sea freight index \u2014 which tracks rates for the capesize, panamax, and supramax vessel segments \u2014 fell 4.2%<\/a> to 1,342 points on Tuesday. The capesize dipped 5% to 1,915 points, while the panamax index slipped by 5.8% to reach 1,278 points. The smaller supramax index shed 1.1% points to 954. <\/p>\n

DATA POINTS- <\/p>\n

#1-<\/strong>Imports <\/strong>at <\/strong>J<\/strong>ordan\u2019s Aqaba Container <\/strong>Terminal saw a 25% y-o-y increase in 1Q 2025 to 109k containers<\/strong>, Petra<\/a> reports, citing Jordanian Logistics Association data. The terminal\u2019s exports rose by 12.5% y-o-y to 25.7k containers during the same period. <\/p>\n

#2- The Ajman Freezones Authority recorded a 15% y-o-y increase in bo<\/strong>th revenue <\/strong>and net income for 2024<\/strong>, driven by a 170% spike in new company registrations \u2014 the highest growth rate in recent years, Wam<\/a> reports. The investment zone also saw its occupancy rate reach 97%.<\/p>\n
