Egypt and Lebanon saw a decline in their headline PMIs, amid a downturn in business activity. However, whereas Egypt saw inflation recover amid greater access to FX, geopolitical concerns yielded lower business performance and a somber outlook for Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Refresher-<\/strong> The all-important 50.0 mark is the threshold separating contraction from growth. Anything above 50 denotes expansion, while anything below indicates contraction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>First up, Egypt:<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s headline PMI figure fell slightly to 47.4 in April, down from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/59d6e504-6275-4093-b402-8f061f1ccf0f\/non-oil-private-sector-activity-across-gcc-continues-to-shows-expansion,-while-egypt-remains-in-contraction-amid-currency-challenges-and-red-sea-disruptions\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">47.6 in<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/59d6e504-6275-4093-b402-8f061f1ccf0f\/non-oil-private-sector-activity-across-gcc-continues-to-shows-expansion,-while-egypt-remains-in-contraction-amid-currency-challenges-and-red-sea-disruptions\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">March<\/a>, and its second-lowest reading in the past year, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/5\/506.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">S&P Global\u2019s Egypt PMI (pdf)<\/a>. Non-oil activity continued to see a downturn amid drops in business activity and weak demand, while new orders and export orders remained flat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Monetary policy shifts show first signs of recovery:<\/strong> PMI data suggests the nation witnessed a sizeable easing of inflationary pressures \u2014 with the rate of cost inflation at its lowest in over three years \u2014 as the implementation new policy measures, including interest rate hikes and the floating of the EGP, saw firms reporting better access to FX. \u201cAverage prices charged for goods and services rose at a much slower rate in April, which could feed through to lower headline inflation in the coming months,\u201d S&P Global Economics Associate Director Phil Smith said in the report. April also saw a renewed downturn in employment, following a slight uptick in March, amid the general fall in business activity. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Firms reduced their purchasing activity in April<\/strong>, despite easing inflation, with Egypt seeing a slowdown in purchase cost inflation as FX markets became more balanced, Smith added. Stocks of purchases also lifted, but only slightly amid delivery delays. Nonetheless supply disruptions were marginal, and eased for the second month in a row. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egypt\u2019s outlook is at a six-month high,<\/strong> as firms look to better availability of materials, exchange rate stability, and lower inflation rates. Nevertheless, sentiments were still low when compared to historical levels. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Over in Lebanon:<\/strong> Lebanon saw a plunge in headline figures in April, driven by a downturn in new orders and output, due to rising security concerns and geopolitical tensions, according to Blominvest Bank\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/5\/512.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Lebanon PMI (pdf)<\/a>. The reading saw a steep drop to 48.9 in April from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/aca4779b-4adb-4a49-a91a-1e3e6f8edcd8\/%253cmark%253elebanon%253c%2Fmark%253e%25e2%2580%2599s-private-sector-continues-to-be-weighed-down-by-security-concerns-and-economic-challenges\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">49.4 in March<\/a>, falling at its fastest in the YTD, and hitting a four-months low.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Security concerns remain a core reason for declines:<\/strong> PMI data indicates a dip in sales volumes to non-domestic customers across Lebanon\u2019s private sector, as security concerns due to the war in Gaza and instability at Lebanon\u2019s southern border deterred clients from placing new orders. New export orders, total new business intakes, and total business activity all declined in April, with Red Sea disruptions driving a surge in shipping costs to Europe and dragging down international sales. New export orders fell at their fastest since December 2022. Delivery times lengthened for the second month running, along with output charges which rose in April.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>On the upside:<\/strong> Purchasing activity and input stocks in Lebanon ramped up to their highest in nine months, with new product launches driving larger inventories. Stocks improved despite deteriorating supplier performance, with lead times increasing for the second month in a row. Firms\u2019 employment held stable, and backlogs were used to supplement activity, resulting in a marginal depletion of backlogs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Firm operating expenses rose slightly,<\/strong> as staff costs and purchase prices rose slightly. Shipping costs and supplier fees also increased, with firms passing on the increases to consumers via a ramp up in output charges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Business outlook in Lebanon remained pessimistic for the next 12 months,<\/strong> with respondents citing geopolitical concerns and threats of spillovers into Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>How did other MENA shape up in April?<\/strong> Saudi Arabia and the UAE\u2019s non-oil private sectors saw <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/b9f3ce7f-5457-4a24-9523-3d6c9968912e\/ksa%25e2%2580%2599s-non-oil-private-sector-witnessed-steady-growth-in-april-while-uae-experienced-a-dip\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">both countries<\/a> holding above the 50.0 mark threshold separating contraction from growth this month. Saudi remained in expansion with steady growth amid favorable market conditions.
