The Mediterranean Sulfur ECA (SECA), which has already been adopted, will cut down on sulfur dioxide emissions by up to 80% by 2030, the statement says. Existing ECAs include the North American area, Baltic Sea, North Sea, and US Caribbean Sea area, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cleanarctic.org\/2023\/06\/28\/infographic-emission-control-areas-reducing-air-pollution-from-shipping\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">CAA<\/a> data.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Sustainable shipping fuels could cost the same as fossil fuels by 2035 if we integrate decisive emissions policy<\/strong>, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wartsila.com\/media\/news\/21-03-2024-sustainable-shipping-fuels-can-reach-cost-parity-with-fossil-fuels-by-2035-with-decisive-policy-says-new-wartsila-report-3420728\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by Finnish maritime manufacturing company W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4. The cost of using fossil fuels could more than double by 2030 due to emission limitation policies, including the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/271b7a60-3882-4313-8f23-d1dfed3b0039\/the-eu-is-pushing-back-against-the-emissions-trading-system,-which-could-cost-them-some-usd-3.6-bn-in-levies\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EU Emissions Trading System<\/a> (ETS) adopted in January. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Enter clean fuel: <\/strong>A switch to distillates or cleaner fuels globally could result in the reduction of black carbon \u201cby around 50% to 80%,\u201dCAA lead advisor Sian Prior told us. In the short term, the \u201cswitch to distillate or switch to cleaner fuels now would be a simple, but broader approach.\u201d Ultimately, it is important that the upcoming regulations are \u201cambitious enough to put shipping on an unambiguously 1.5 centigrade compliant pathway,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A case of green methanol? <\/strong>Green methanol can be produced from biomass, captured carbon, or green hydrogen and stands to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/maersk-apm-holding-form-c2x-green-methanol-venture-2023-09-14\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">slash emissions from shipping vessels by 60% to 95%<\/a> compared with conventional fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Our region is no stranger to green fuel:<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sczone.eg\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Suez Canal Economic Zone<\/a> (SCZone) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/1528c30e-07f7-467b-a27b-7151ed4b7382\/maersk%25e2%2580%2599s-green-fuels-arm-inks-usd-3-bn-framework-agreement-with-egypt-to-produce-green-methanol\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">inked a framework agreement<\/a> in October with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/bd252516-5da3-42e9-b782-65ed8a934306\/maersk%25e2%2580%2599s-new-green-fuels-venture-eyes-suez-canal-production-hub\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">C2X<\/a> \u2014 owned by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apmoller.com\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">AP Moller Holding<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maersk.com\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">AP Moller-Maersk<\/a> \u2014 worth some USD 3 bn for the production of green methanol. The SCZone also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/421bbe7e-ffb4-4d3c-92ad-0fea152b4913\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">inked a land use contract<\/a> back in 2021 with a company jointly owned by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arabfertilizer.org\/companies\/company\/id\/80\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Abu Qir Fertilizers<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hfcegypt.com\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Helwan Fertilizers<\/a>, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/alahlycapital.com\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Al Ahly Capital Holding<\/a> to establish a USD 2.6 bn methanol plant at Egypt's Ain Sokhna port and industrial complex. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The region is shaping itself to be a green hydrogen hub: <\/strong>Regional players have been scurrying to develop green hydrogen development facilities to ease their reliance on fossil fuels. The UAE\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adportsgroup.com\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">AD Ports Group<\/a> and Abu Dhabi energy company Masdar <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/a541df8a-0aaf-4be8-83c9-9b5b643a3af0\/ad-ports-group-%2B-masdar-ink-mou-for%253cmark%253e-green-hydrogen-%253c%2Fmark%253eexport-terminals\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">inked an MoU<\/a> in December to explore the development of a green hydrogen production hub \u2014 along with export terminals for green hydrogen \u2014 in Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kezadgroup.com\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Kezad<\/a>). The moves complement the UAE\u2019s National Hydrogen Strategy, which targets scaling up local hydrogen production to 1.4 mn tons per annum by 2031.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We are getting more production sites:<\/strong> The SCZone inked a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/2f178b9d-70f0-47c5-9534-48839334cb70\/are-food-delivery-drones-coming-to-the-uae%3F-%2B-customs-agents-in-the-uae-can-now-carry-out-remote-inspections\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">framework agreement<\/a> in October with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ceic.com\/gjnyjtwwEn\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">China Energy Company<\/a> to set up a USD 6.75 bn green hydrogen plant spanning 500k square meters in Sokhna Industrial Zone for the production of 1.2 mn tons of green ammonia and 210k tons of green hydron annually.
