Good morning, friends.<\/strong> It\u2019s the third \u2014 and penultimate \u2014 day of the TransMEA forum in Egypt, which brings together key regional players in sectors spanning rail, shipping and maritime and logistics. <\/p>\n

Yesterday saw Egypt ink a slew of agreements with local and international firms to give a boost to its railway sector<\/strong>, whether through localizing the manufacturing of railway networks or agreements to complete its high-speed railway network.<\/p>\n

ALSO HAPPENING THIS WEEK- <\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a>The US military has dispatched an Ohio-class missile submarine to the Middle <\/strong>East<\/strong>, CNN<\/a> reports, citing a post<\/a> on facebook by the US Central Command<\/a>. The post, which is accompanied by an image that seems to show the sub in the Suez Canal, has been interpreted as a \u201cmessage of deterrence\u201d amid the ongoing war in Gaza, CNN explains.<\/p>\n

LATER DOWN THE ROAD- <\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a>Large tankers are likely to divert away from the Panama Canal next year, moving <\/strong>towards<\/strong> routes via the Suez Canal or the Cape of Good Hope<\/strong>, due to the ongoing drought restrictions, Splash<\/a> reports, citing several reports from brokers and research agencies. The ongoing drought has reduced water levels in Gatun Lake, making it increasingly difficult for the canal to accommodate the draft requirements of larger vessels. Slots for larger ships will be further limited as the canal authority looks to reduce<\/a> the number of daily ships transiting the canal a day from 31 to 18 next year, with most slots usually taken up by container vessels, which have more leeway to book in advance. <\/p>\n

Longer hauls = more demand for larger vessels: <\/strong>\u201cThe stark reduction in slots will push many of the tramp vessels (including tankers and dry cargo ships) away from the Canal,\u201d New York-based tanker brokers Poten & Partners predicts. \u201cThis will lead to more ton-mile demand and possibly changes in segment utilization as longer hauls may stimulate the use of larger vessels.\u201d<\/p>\n

WATCH THIS SPACE<\/strong> #1- China could invest in Iranian infrastructure:<\/strong> Iran is offering up the manufacturing of two high-speed trains in Iran \u2014 as well the equipping and development of Iranian ports \u2014 to Chinese investors, Tasnim News Agency<\/a> cites Iran\u2019s Roads and Urban Development Minister Shahriar Afandizadeh as saying. <\/p>\n

<\/a> WATCH THIS SPACE #2- E<\/strong>mirates considering adding mo<\/strong>re cargo planes to its <\/strong>fleet:<\/strong>Emirates Airlines<\/a> is considering an order for Airbus or Boeing freighters and may convert some of its passenger jets to double its cargo fleet over the next decade, Emirates SkyCargo<\/a> divisional senior vice president Nabil Sultan told Bloomberg<\/a> at an industry conference in Singapore. The carrier has not yet decided between the two manufacturers and it could take another four years to commit to either, Sultan stated, adding that some of the carrier's more than 100 Boeing 777 passenger planes could be converted to cargo planes. The carrier aims to evaluate by 2027 whether it will need a \u201cdifferent mix to what we have already,\u201d Sultan added.<\/p>\n

WATCH THIS SPACE #3-<\/strong> Iran and Russia are finalizing the technical details for the EUR 1.6 bn <\/strong>Rasht-Astara railway<\/a><\/strong> project<\/strong>, including inking an agreement for a loan from Russia for the completion of the project, Tehran Times<\/a> reports, citing managing director of Iran\u2019s Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructures Company Kheirollah Khademi. The blueprint for the railway has been approved along with amendments to increase the speed and capacity of the route. Further technical details will be finalized soon, the outlet adds.<\/p>\n

Background:<\/strong> The railway<\/a>, for which Iran and Russia inked an agreement in May, will connect Rasht, near the Caspian Sea, with Astara on the border with Azerbaijan. Upon its completion, this railway link will enable the transportation of freight by rail from the Persian Gulf to Helsinki in Finland, passing through Russia's Saint Petersburg. It is considered a vital part of the International North-South Transport Corridor, which connects India, Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, and other countries through railways and sea routes<\/p>\n

DATA POINT - Qatar saw cargo transport rise some 6.7% y-o-y to 201.8k tonnes in September<\/strong>,<\/a><\/strong>according to statistics<\/a> from its civil aviation authority. Air transport statistics also noted a 23.3% year-on-year rise in aircraft movement during the month. <\/p>\n

The<\/strong><\/a><\/strong>GCC-T\u00fcrkiye Economic Forum<\/a><\/strong> will kick off on 11-13 November at \u00c7\u0131ra\u011fan Palace <\/strong>Kempinski Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey.<\/strong> The forum will allow the GCC and Turkey to explore potential areas of cooperation, increase bilateral trade, and establish networks for joint projects, according to the forum website. The event will feature a number of Turkish and GCC speakers and panelists from sectors including trade, investment, industry and logistics, infrastructure, agriculture and food, and sports. <\/p>\n

The third Caspian Economic <\/strong>Forum<\/strong> will be held in mid-November in Iran<\/strong>, state-owned Islamic Republic News Agency<\/a> reports. The event is set to focus on transportation, joint ventures, oil and gas, finance, banking and technical cooperation in Iran, with Alireza Jahangiri, Iran\u2019s deputy foreign caspian sea affairs minister, calling on economic institutions to attend, IRNA adds. The exact location and dates of the forum have yet to be confirmed.<\/p>\n

The <\/strong>Dubai Air Show<\/a><\/strong> will be held from 13-17 November<\/strong> at DWC, at the Dubai Airshow site, in Dubai. The event will feature over 180 aircraft including business jets, drones, commercial airlines, military jets, helicopters, and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The event will also gather decision makers to discuss the latest trends and challenges across the aviation industry, and how to drive sustainable aviation operations.<\/p>\n

The <\/strong>Supply Chain & Logistics Arabia<\/a><\/strong> summit is set to take place on 14-15 November at <\/strong>Narcissus in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.<\/strong> The event will feature several panel discussions on matters including the future of supply chain, digitalisation and technology, procurement, warehouses, distribution and fulfillment, and last mile issues.<\/p>\n

The <\/strong>IATA Slot Conference<\/a><\/strong> is set to take place on 14-17 November at the Dubai World <\/strong>Trade Centre in Dubai, UAE.<\/strong> The business meeting will host over 1k delegates, with representatives of more than 200 slot coordinated airports and over 225 airlines from across the world. The event allows the global airline community to meet for quick optimisation of planned schedules and to explore chances for growing routes and networks.<\/p>\n

The <\/strong>Global Freight Summit 2023<\/a><\/strong> will be taking place on 15-17 November<\/strong> at the Coca Cola Arena, Dubai, UAE. Hosted by DP World, the event aims to create a platform for the international freight forwarding and supply chain communities, bringing together industry leaders and the global freight community to discuss challenges that are prevalent across the sector. The event will be held under the theme Making the Future Supply Chain a Reality, with the aim of exploring how industry stakeholders can take action to face these challenges.<\/p>\n

The first <\/strong>GCC-Egyptian Business Forum<\/strong> will be held on 22-23 November in Cairo, Egypt<\/strong>, Bahrain News Agency<\/a> reports.
