THE BIG LOGISTICS STORY- <\/strong> A joint venture <\/strong> between Qatari port operator QTerminals and Belgium\u2019s <\/strong> Deme concessions <\/strong> will build and operate a new deep-water container terminal <\/strong>in \u015awinouj\u015bcie on Poland\u2019s Baltic Coast. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia handed out licenses to several Chinese logistics firms to operate in the kingdom. <\/p>\n

<\/a> Turkey + Iraq discuss Development Road Project: <\/strong>Iraq\u2019s Transport Minister Razzaq Al Saadawi and Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Oraloglu discussed the technical, legal, and financial issues concerning Iraq\u2019s USD 17 bn Development Road Project<\/a>, according to an Iraqi Transport Ministry statement<\/a>. The meeting, which took place in Baghdad, reviewed the economic model of the project and technical and operational details.<\/p>\n

The two countries are currently working on establishing joint committees <\/strong>to discuss the technical, financial and legislative details of the project and resolve any issues that come up, Al Saadawi said. Turkey has also formed a coordination council with several European countries to work on the project, and calls on Iraq to do the same with Arab countries, Oraloglu said. <\/p>\n

SOUNDBITE OF THE WEEK- The project stands to be a \u201cgold medalist\u201d among <\/strong> corridors of its kind<\/strong>, the Turkish minister said. This comes as other planned rival projects \u2014 like the US-backed India-MENA corridor \u2014 stand to bypass Turkey in linking the Middle East with Europe. \u201cThere can be no corridor without Turkey,\u201d Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said<\/a> recently at the G20 summit, while positing the Development Road project as a more viable alternative.<\/p>\n

<\/a> Yemen\u2019s only international flight has been suspended: <\/strong>Yemen\u2019s national airline, Yemenia Airways<\/a>, will suspend its only international commercial flight from Sanaa to Amman, Jordan, after the Houthi administration blocked the carrier from withdrawing some USD 80 mn of its funds in Sanaa banks, four company executives told Reuters<\/a>. The airline will halt six weekly flights this month, after they were initially resumed in April 2022, the outlet added. <\/p>\n

Background: <\/strong>The carrier had been in negotiations with the Houthi administration, and had proposed that the administration take 70% of the funds, leaving the internationally recognized Yemeni government with the remaining 30%, but the Houthis rejected the proposal, the sources told the outlet.<\/p>\n

<\/a> Flights resume between Libya + Italy after 10-year hiatus: <\/strong>The first flight in nearly 10 years between Libya and Italy took off from Libya\u2019s Mitiga Airport to Rome on Saturday, following an agreement between Italian and Libyan civil aviation authorities to boost civil aviation cooperation, Libyan news agency<\/a> Lana reports. Libya\u2019s Mediterranean Sky Airlines will now operate two weekly flights on Saturday and Wednesday from Mitiga Airport to Rome\u2019s Fiumicino International Airport, Lana reported separately<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More on the agreement: <\/strong>The agreement aims to develop cooperation in civil aviation and air transport, and to facilitate and encourage air transport companies to operate, charter, and provide regular flights, Lana writes. <\/p>\n

<\/a> PSA- <\/strong> Hapag-Lloyd will be rolling out a general rate increase (GRI) to shipping <\/strong> from the Middle East and Indian Subcontinent to the US East Coast and Gulf Coast<\/strong>, according to a company announcement<\/a>. The USD 200 per container increase in charges will be applied to all cargo transported in 20 and 40 foot dry, reefer, and special containers, including high cube equipment. The GRI will come into effect on 1 November and is effective until further notice.<\/p>\n

PSA- <\/strong> Abu Dhabi police will bar the entry of trucks and worker buses to Abu Dhabi <\/strong> island from 6am till noon today<\/strong>, in light of the start of Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference 2023, Wam<\/a> reported. <\/p>\n

The <\/strong> fourth <\/strong>Extraordinary Congress of the Universal Postal<\/a><\/strong>Union<\/a><\/strong> (UPU) kicked off yesterday <\/strong>in Riyadh and will run till Thursday, Saudi press<\/a> agency<\/a> SPA reported. Representatives from 192 countries are expected to attend the event, which is held under the co-chairmanship of the Saudi Postal Corporation, and will discuss the impact of UPU decisions on the postal and logistics sector and how to keep pace with technological developments and address challenges. It will also touch on how to build a postal system that promotes economic and social development.<\/p>\n

A <\/strong> delegation of Kuwait\u2019s Chamber of Commerce led by Mohammed Jassim Al Saqr has <\/strong> landed in Canada yesterday for a joint economic forum<\/strong>, and will stay till Thursday, Kuwait\u2019s Al Anba<\/a> reports. The forum will review avenues for cooperation and investment in several sectors including oil and gas, transportation, logistics, AI and innovation, banking and finance, among others. The Kuwaiti delegation will include several members of the chamber of commerce, representatives from government agencies and Kuwaiti companies. <\/p>\n

DATA POINT- <\/strong> Iran\u2019s non-oil exports rose 5% y-o-y to USD 54.6 bn in 1H of the Persian <\/strong> fiscal year<\/strong>, which starts 21 March, head of Iran\u2019s customs administration Mohammad Rezvanifar told Fars news agency<\/a>. The volume of goods transported during the first half of the year was 7.7 mn tons, marking an 8.2% y-o-y increase. Iran\u2019s trade partners this year have been China, Iraq, the UAE, Turkey, and India, with the biggest sources for the country\u2019s imports being UAE, China, Turkey, Germany, and India, Rezvanifar told the news agency.<\/p>\n
