Literally carrying the global shipping industry are several types of vessels that ply the ocean\u2019s waters \u2014 each categorized by their respective sizes, volumes, and ultimately what they carry.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">In the world of commercial vessels, there are five<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">categories:<\/span><span style=\"\"> Vessels carrying dry cargo, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">liquid cargo, general cargo vessels, containers, and specialty vessels. The type of vessel employed by shipping companies will depend on the size and nature of the cargo, their trade routes, and the ports they\u2019ll have to pass through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">DRY CARGO + CONTAINERS- <\/span><span style=\"\">One of the most common cargo vessels that transport cargo <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">are dry cargo vessels, which carry all types of goods, excluding liquids. These vessels are different in size, but are all able to carry large quantities of cargo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The location is in the name:<\/span><span style=\"\"> Most of these vessels are named after the travel routes that they <\/span><span>usually take, which include the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pancanal.com\/en\/\" style=\"\">Panama Canal<\/a><\/span><span>, Egypt\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suezcanal.gov.eg\/English\/Pages\/default.aspx\" style=\"\">Suez Canal<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, and South Africa\u2019s Cape of Good Hope or Chile\u2019s Cape Horn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Panamax vessels, for example, are built to pass through the Panama Canal<\/span><span style=\"\">, which means <\/span><span>they must be no more than 32 meters wide and 294 meters long, with a draft of 12 meters, according to the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/6\/785.pdf\" style=\"\">American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) (pdf)<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. These vessels usually have a cargo capacity of some 5k TEUs \u2014 or a twenty-foot equivalent unit, and can come in the form of a tanker, a container vessel and a dry bulk carrier. They have a range of 50k-80k deadweight tons (DWTs), which indicates how much weight capacity a ship can carry, according to the AAPA. These vessels usually transport cargo including iron ore, different forms of coal and grains. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Given the constrained infrastructure of the canal, it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">underwent a USD 5.2 bn <\/span><span style=\"-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;text-decoration-skip-ink:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsp.com\/en-gl\/projects\/panama-canal-expansion\" style=\"\">expansion<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">2016<\/span><span> in order to accommodate increased demand of container ships that were oversized for its infrastructure. This resulted in the development of  the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">New Panamax vessel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. The reconfigured vessel model can carry more cargo \u2014 around 13k TEUs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Suezmax vessels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">are the largest vessels that can go through the Suez canal<\/span><span style=\"\">, with a <\/span><span>capacity of 120k-200k DWT, with their beam being up to 50 meters at 20.1 m draft, and a length of 275 meters, as per the Suez Canal <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suezcanal.gov.eg\/English\/Navigation\/pages\/rulesofnavigation.aspx\" style=\"\">requirements<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Capesize vessels cannot pass through the Suez or Panama canal due to their larger size<\/span><span>and ability to haul a capacity ranging between <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/maritimepage.com\/capesize-bulk-carriers-a-complete-overview-of-giant-ships\/\" style=\"\">150k-400k<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> DWT. They are classified as bulk cargo carrier ships as opposed to tanker vessels, and they usually transport raw materials including ores, coal, and minerals. They are the largest dry bulk carrier, and are mainly used to carry large volumes of commodities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The smallest dry bulk carriers are known as Handymax vessels<\/span><span style=\"\">, and have a carrying capacity of up to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marineinsight.com\/types-of-ships\/what-is-the-difference-between-handymax-and-capesize-vessels\/\" style=\"\">60k<\/a><\/span><span style=\"\"> DWT. <\/span><span>These vessels are dubbed the workhorses of the dry bulk market with a length of some 150-200 m. Handymax vessels are commonly built in Asian shipyards and carry cargo that ranges from cement, steel, and lumber to ores. The advantage of this vessel is that they can carry any form of dry bulk cargo while being able to unload at smaller ports and docks, according to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marineinsight.com\/types-of-ships\/what-is-the-difference-between-handymax-and-capesize-vessels\/\" style=\"\">Marine Insight<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">For not so dry cargo, there\u2019s reefers.<\/span><span style=\"\"> Reefer vessels are refrigerated in order to transport <\/span><span>perishable cargo \u2014 which includes everything that requires temperature controlled handling including foods such as meat, dairy products, vegetables, fruits, flowers, and pharma products. Shipping companies involved in cold chain supply for reefers usually provide <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maersk.com\/supply-chain-logistics\/cold-chain-logistics?gad=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwyqWkBhBMEiwAp2yUFlpCVUgbXzIkuCqnwIY7o-IU6_f32Ao0WdVnUueZnX5T2j8Rl12PJxoC_tgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds\" style=\"\">end-to-end integrated solutions<\/a><\/span><span> as well as cold storage facilities too, such as leading Danish shipping company <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maersk.com\/\" style=\"\">Maersk<\/a><\/span><span>. Reefers have a range of temperature variations, with the average for most ranging from -30\u00b0C to 30\u00b0C, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maersk.com\/support\/faqs\/reefer-container-temperature-range\" style=\"\">according<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> to Maersk.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">LIQUID CARGO- Vessels that carry liquid cargo include crude carriers and liquified gas <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">carriers<\/span><span> which can transport either liquified natural gas (LNG) or liquified petroleum LPG. Crude carriers include Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) and Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCC), which both transport large quantities of crude oil from production fields to refineries. VLCCs have a 250k dwt, white ULCCs have 250k-500k dwt, according to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marineinsight.com\/types-of-ships\/what-are-very-large-crude-carrier-vlcc-and-ultra-large-crude-carrier-ulcc\/\" style=\"\">Marine Insight<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Liquified gas carriers are operationally flexible, able to carry both LPG and LNG.<\/span><span style=\"\"> What <\/span><span>differentiates them from the dry bulk carriers is that these vessels can be quickly emptied and refilled, making it efficient to load and discharge the liquids, according to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transworld.com\/blogs\/101-shippers-guide-types-of-ships-and-vessels\/\" style=\"\">Transworld Group<\/a><\/span><span>. LPG vessels carrying propane and butane transport them in a pressurized liquid form, according to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marineinsight.com\/naval-architecture\/understanding-design-liquefied-gas-carriers\/\" style=\"\">Marine Insight<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">., while LNG is cooled and transported as liquid methane.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Aframax<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> vessels are also oil tankers that get their name from the average freight rate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">assessment (AFRA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">) system<\/span><span>, which was developed due to size constraints that were imposed on large oil tankers entering sea-routes with traffic. These vessels usually weigh around 120k DWT \u2014 and most commonly ply the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Caribbean, and North Sea, according to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marineinsight.com\/types-of-ships\/panamax-and-aframax-tankers-oil-tankers-with-a-difference\/\" style=\"\">Marine Insight<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. These tankers can also be used as cargo containers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">SPECIALIZED VESSELS- <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Specialized vessels are constructed and used for specific purposes: <\/span><span style=\"\">The most commonly <\/span><span>used specialized vessels are known as tugboats, which are used to maneuver other vessels around by pulling or pushing them through direct contact or a tow line, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marineinsight.com\/types-of-ships\/what-are-tug-boats\/\" style=\"\">Marine Insight<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> explains. Although they are smaller in size, they can be used to dislodge vessels that get stuck due to running aground in narrow water channels. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">If you\u2019re wondering how important specialized vessels are to the world, it was two <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">high-powered tug boats that <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/mar\/30\/powerful-tugs-and-an-ebbing-tide-how-the-ever-given-was-freed\" style=\"\">came to the rescue<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> when a large vessel \u2014 Ever Given \u2014 was stranded in the Suez Canal in 2021, blocking an essential trade artery for a week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Roll-on\/Roll-off vessels \u2014 or  R<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">oRo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> vessels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">\u2014 come in various forms and are built to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">transport wheeled cargo<\/span><span>, according to maritime data solution provider <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sinay.ai\/en\/what-is-roro-shipping\/#:~:text=RoRo%20ships%20can%20have%20up,hold%20up%20to%208%2C000%20vehicles.\" style=\"\">Sinay<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. They are equipped with a special inclined ramp located at either the stern or bow to facilitate the loading and unloading of vehicles, and usually have a capacity of around 4-5k CEU (car equivalent unit), with some able to carry up to 8k vehicles.
