Turkey has engaged in investment negotiations \u2014 including the sale of the port\u2019s operating rights \u2014 with Gulf region countries at the deputy minister level, Uraloglu told the business information service, without disclosing the potential buyers or expected value of the transaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">About the port: <\/span><span style=\"\">Alsancak port is <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvf.com.tr\/en\/our-portfolio\/transport-and-logistics\" style=\"\">owned<\/a><\/span><span style=\"\"> by Turkish sovereign wealth <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvf.com.tr\/en\/home\" style=\"\">TWF<\/a><\/span><span style=\"\"> and is operated by<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcdd.gov.tr\/\" style=\"\">TC State Railways General Directorate<\/a><\/span><span> (TCDD). Located in the Aegean city of Izmir, the 635k sqm port can handle up to 1.2 mn TEU containers of cargo, and 1.4 mn tons of general and bulk dry cargo annually, according to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcdd.gov.tr\/en\/izmir-port\" style=\"\">TCDD<\/a><\/span><span>. The port was slated for privatization i<\/span><span>n 2004<\/span><span> and a consortium of Hutchison Port Holdings, EIB Limas, and Global Yatirim Holding was <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ckh.com.hk\/en\/media\/press_each.php?id=2078\" style=\"\">awarded the tender<\/a><\/span><span> in 2007 to operate the port, before Turkey\u2019s top administrative court <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/turkey-port-cancellation-idINIST00166520080228\" style=\"\">blocked the tender the following year<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. The consortium had submitted a USD 1.28 bn bid for the concession rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Gulf countries have recently been expanding their presence in operating ports: <\/span><span style=\"\">Emirati<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adports.ae\/\" style=\"\">AD Ports<\/a><\/span><span> has been venturing into developing and operating ports, spanning from overseeing operations at the terminal at <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/9eac7768-63f4-46a8-b17a-327c5ba28ce4\" style=\"\">Pakistan\u2019s Karachi Port<\/a><\/span><span> for 50 years, to managing and operating a multipurpose New East Mole Terminal  <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/edition\/logistics\/d0789529-a4cb-4632-9e9d-9316a946c694\" style=\"\">Congo\u2019s Pointe-Noire<\/a><\/span><span> for 30 years.
