Under the ruling<\/span><span style=\"\">, Turkey will shell out approximately USD 1.5 bn to Iraq, a figure far lower than Iraq had asked for, sources close to the matter told the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b4837b44-a646-4d91-8f86-45a51612dad3\" style=\"\">Financial Times<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The dispute<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">: Iraq claimed that Turkey had been in violation of a 1973 pipeline transit agreement by enabling the Kurdish government to export oil through a pipeline out of Iraq, without the Iraqi government\u2019s consent. The 1973 pipeline agreement stipulates that the Turkish government must comply with the instructions of the Iraqi government in regards to the movement of exported crude oil from Iraq. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">What does this mean? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The ruling will halt oil exports out of the Kurdish region of Iraq to Turkey without the consent of Iraq's State Oil Marketing Organization(SOMO), according to the statement from the oil ministry. SOMO will be the only authorized entity to manage export operations to the port of Ceyhan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">While exports have been halted, the oil ministry will discuss mechanisms to continue exports of Iraqi oil<\/span><span style=\"\"> to the port of Ceyhan. Turkey has informed Iraq that it will respect the arbitration ruling while KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barazani has <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/masrourbarzani\/status\/1639679890625552385?s%3D46%26t%3DkYYrfM9MmHz9o7V0Mb8c2A\" style=\"\">tweeted<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> that KRG will visit Baghdad to make headway in the discussions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Background:<\/span><span style=\"\"> Iraq is OPEC\u2019s second largest producer exporting some 3.3 mn b\/d, of which 75k b\/d are sent from Kirkuk to the port of Ceyhan.
