The tanker was safe with no reported injuries, but the UAE accused Iran of what it says was an unprovoked \u201cterrorist attack\u201d and demanded it halt all hostilities. Later, there were <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/uaes-fujairah-says-fire-breaks-out-petroleum-complex-after-iranian-drone-attack-2026-05-04\/\" style=\"\">reports of a fire erupting at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone<\/a>, and the UAE <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/article\/c01kgcp-uae-air-defences-detect-four-cruise-missiles-from\" style=\"\">said<\/a> it intercepted three cruise missiles from Iran while a fourth fell into the sea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Iran seems to be targeting every oil export route the UAE has. <\/strong>The Strait remains blocked, and now the Fujairah pipeline, which has been carrying out half of the UAE\u2019s output since the war began, is likely compromised.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>No strait, no problem\u2026? <\/strong>Our big story of the day dives into Pakistan\u2019s push to open a land-side workaround for Iran-bound cargo \u2014 routing shipments through Gwadar and overland corridors to bypass Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sub.ent.news\/menaplus\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2026\/4\/1627.gif?ssl=1\"\/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Riyadh to Mumbai. The move follows the Emirates' <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2026\/04\/29\/uae-exits-opec-to-prioritize-capacity-over-quotas\/\" style=\"\">surprise exit<\/a> from Opec and Opec+ late last month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Oapec? <\/strong>The Kuwait-headquartered alliance was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/oapecorg.org\/Home\/About-Us\/History\" style=\"\">founded in 1968<\/a> to foster cooperation between Arab oil-producing nations, focusing on technical research, joint ventures, and regional energy policy. The organization does not play a role in setting global oil prices and production quotas. The UAE was not a founding member.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a><\/strong> <strong>TRADE<\/strong><strong> \u2014 Gas fixes outweigh Hormuz risk: <\/strong>Global gas supplies could offset roughly twice the volumes lost to the Strait of Hormuz closure by tackling <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/fdc6aa8a-538a-4f1d-b1b9-a0ce0cd2a5ac\" style=\"\">gas flaring<\/a> and leaks. Around 110 bcm of LNG \u2014 some 20% of global LNG flows \u2014 passed through Hormuz last year. At the same time, the International Energy Agency estimates that cutting methane emissions could unlock about 100 bcm annually, with another 100 bcm from eliminating non-emergency flaring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Stop losing gas before chasing more:<\/strong> Nearly 15 bcm could be made available quickly enough to offer some relief to gas markets if producers and importing countries move to abatement measures, the energy watchdog says. Those measures include plugging pipeline leaks, replacing defective equipment, and capturing gas rather than flaring it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Our take: <\/strong>LNG stranded by the conflict cannot be rerouted at scale, because exports from Qatar and the UAE have no meaningful alternative route to global markets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Market watch<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Oil prices fell over 1% this morning after a 6% gain as the US moves in Hormuz signaled <\/strong><strong>supply relief<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/us-crude-eases-1-traders-weigh-supply-risks-2026-05-04\/\" style=\"\">Reuters<\/a> reports. Brent crude futures declined USD 1.22 to trade at USD 113.22 \/ bbl by 03.23 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) slipped USD 2.02 to USD 104.40 \/ bbl.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The Baltic Index maintains its rising trajectory: <\/strong>The Baltic Exchange\u2019s dry bulk index \u2014 which tracks rates for the capesize, panamax, and supramax vessel segments \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/baltic\" style=\"\">was up 0.6% to<\/a> 2,686 points on Tuesday, buoyed by gains in the bigger vessel segments. The capesize rose 1% to o 2,670 points, while the panamax index increased 0.7% to 1,992. The airline abruptly shut down on Saturday, canceled all flights, closed customer service, and told passengers to stay away from airports, with refunds being issued automatically.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The airline was already broken<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Spirit Airlines had already <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/spirit-airlines-raises-going-concern-doubts-months-after-exiting-bankruptcy-2025-08-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed<\/a><\/strong><strong> for bankruptcy twice in less than a year. <\/strong>It emerged from restructuring in March 2025, only to warn by August that weak leisure demand, excess domestic capacity, and dwindling liquidity had raised \u201csubstantial doubt\u201d about its ability to continue operating.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>This was not a one-shock collapse:<\/strong> \u201cThe demise of Spirit Airlines is better understood as the culmination of structural pressures rather than the result of a single external shock. The spike in fuel prices linked to tensions in the Middle East may have accelerated the timeline, but the airline was already operating with very limited margin for error,\u201d Richard Maslen, head of analysis at CAPA - Centre for Aviation, tells EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The model didn\u2019t fail in theory \u2014 it ran out of runway in the US market. <\/strong>\u201cIts balance sheet was stretched, its growth options constrained, and its competitive position weakened following the collapse of its planned tie-up with JetBlue Airways. In that sense, the model itself did not fail \u2014 rather, it struggled to adapt to the specific cost, regulatory, and competitive dynamics of the US market,\u201d Maslen adds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Then the exit routes closed:<\/strong> A US government move to block the USD 3.8 bn JetBlue-Spirit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/archives\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-statements-jetblue-terminating-acquisition-spirit-airlines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">merger<\/a> in 2024 eliminated a key lifeline, arguing the agreement would hurt competition and raise fares. Spirit\u2019s attempt to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/litigation\/spirits-troubles-expose-limits-premium-strategy-low-cost-carriers-2025-10-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pivot<\/a> upmarket \u2014 with bundled and more premium offerings \u2014 left it chasing customers already captured by larger carriers, without the scale or advantages to compete.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The aircraft stopped doing the work<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Spirit\u2019s low-cost machine was already losing flight hours:<\/strong> The carrier\u2019s fleet utilization <a href=\"https:\/\/aerospaceglobalnews.com\/news\/spirit-airlines-receives-150m-compensation-as-gtf-groundings-continue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fell<\/a> to an average of 9.9 hours a day in 2024, down from 11.1 hours in 2023 \u2014 with the drop mainly tied to Pratt &amp; Whitney GTF engine issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The disruption forced the airline to shrink around the problem: <\/strong>By the end of 2024, Spirit <a href=\"https:\/\/aerospaceglobalnews.com\/news\/spirit-airlines-receives-150m-compensation-as-gtf-groundings-continue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">operated<\/a> 213 Airbus single-aisle aircraft, including 91 Airbus A320neo jets powered by the affected PW1100G-JM engines. Management acknowledged that airlines with more diversified fleets were better positioned to absorb those shocks. The fallout led Spirit to scale back, suspend, or exit service in multiple cities while idling roughly 170 pilots in September 2024 and another 300 in January 2025 to align with reduced capacity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Compensation offered some relief \u2014 but not a solution: <\/strong>Spirit received USD 150.6 mn from Pratt &amp; Whitney in 2024 for aircraft-on-ground days under an agreement covering unserviceable jets through year-end. But with inspections and engine removals expected to continue into at least 2026, the airline was left operating with a smaller, constrained fleet just as it attempted to emerge from Chapter 11 and restore profitability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The fare model had no room for a fuel shock<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The real bill came after the fare:<\/strong> Spirit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1498710\/000149871017000044\/save-20161231x10k.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">built<\/a> its economics on low, unbundled base fares, high fleet utilization, and paid extras \u2014 bags, seats, and other passenger-related fees \u2014 that turned the ticket into only the entry price.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>That model works \u2014 until the planes slow down:<\/strong> The low-cost model customers are more <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/04\/01\/which-airline-models-hold-up-under-prolonged-disruption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">price-sensitive<\/a>, which makes it harder to push higher fuel and operating costs into fares without weakening demand. \u201cThis business model creates very small margins and requires stringent cost control to avoid the small [income] margin changing into a loss,\u201d aviation analyst Hans J\u00f8rgen Elnaes tells EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>So was Spirit the first aviation casualty of the Iran war? <\/strong>\u201cYes, it is, but keeping in mind Spirit\u2019s longtime financial stress was also a major driver for it going out of business,\u201d Elnaes says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The conflict acted as an accelerant:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/04\/01\/which-airline-models-hold-up-under-prolonged-disruption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jet fuel prices surged sharply<\/a> after the conflict began, forcing airlines to raise fares, cut capacity, and rethink marginal flying.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>\u201cIn my view, the major reason behind Spirit Airlines being grounded or going bankrupt is <\/strong><strong>the high jet fuel spot price<\/strong>,\u201d Elnaes argues. \u201cThe extra fuel cost hit so hard on the cashflow reserves that without an imminent capital injection, Spirit was doomed. Keeping in mind, Spirit Airlines was not in any fuel hedge position, as is the market practice by US airlines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The stress test is not over: <\/strong>\u201cHigh jet fuel prices over time are historically a major reason for airline bankruptcies. Fortunately, most airlines today are more financially robust than before the pandemic, but in my view, Spirit Airlines will not be the last airline to go out of business during 2026 due to the high jet fuel spot price,\u201d Elnaes notes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Why didn't Washington save it?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The rescue fell apart because the capital stack never aligned: <\/strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/talks-to-bail-out-spirit-airlines-stall-as-company-teeters-toward-collapse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed<\/a> USD 500 mn government lifeline would have given Washington a senior claim and warrants for a major stake in Spirit, but that structure needed creditor support. Some bondholders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/spirit-airlines-shutting-down-failed-rescue-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pushed back<\/a>, unwilling to be pushed down the recovery ladder by a government-backed senior position, while a creditor-led counterproposal failed to secure approval.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Not a systemwide shock<\/strong>: \u201cUnlike previous crises, this was not a systemic shock affecting the entire industry, but a company-specific deterioration. Policymakers likely judged that the market could absorb the capacity, limiting long-term disruption,\u201d Maslen says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The market had delivered its verdict: <\/strong>\u201cIf there was support for Spirit in the financial markets, capital would have been raised to save the airline, but not one cent surfaced from the financial market [or] competing airlines. A clear signal from the financial market that Spirit did not have a bright future as a company to invest in,\u201d Elnaes argues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Washington\u2019s final response shifted from rescue to damage control: <\/strong>The US Department of Transportation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/briefing-room\/trumps-transportation-secretary-sean-p-duffy-secures-relief-spirit-airlines-flyers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coordinated<\/a> with other airlines to rebook stranded passengers, cap or lower fares for affected customers, protect route access where possible, and connect Spirit workers with job windows.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:
