Despite a jolt that briefly closed Dubai\u2019s hub and sent jet fuel prices up <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/14\/jet-fuel-shortage-middle-east-crisis-flight-cancellations-europe.html\" style=\"\">103% in March<\/a>, Clark\u2019s thesis is that Emirates is a pillar of stability, even when the airspace above it is not.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Clark vs. the laggards: <\/strong>Clark took aim at European and US legacy carriers, saying he is not threatened by competition despite some of them seeing increased demand on routes in Asia as fliers looked to bypass the region. \u201cThey have no aircraft to be able to do, or even come anywhere near the production capability of 270 widebody aircraft in Emirates alone,\u201d Clark said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>He backed up the airline\u2019s current business model<\/strong>, saying: \u201cI don\u2019t think things will change how we operate the airline or this model.\u201d This comes as the hub-and-spoke system that Gulf airlines operate is facing a stress test. Under this model, instead of flying passengers directly between cities, airlines funnel travelers from multiple \u201cspoke\u201d cities into a central hub before redistributing them onward. The cargo left on 22 April aboard Al Qa\u2019iyyahal, with only Train 1 currently in operation. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong> Golden Pass could provide QatarEnergy with a crucial alternative source of supply beyond the Gulf at a time when it is urgently needed. Train 1 adds 6 mtpa of LNG capacity, with the full three-train project <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/issues\/the-war-is-stress-testing-airlines-endurance-under-prolonged-disruptions\/\" style=\"\">designed for 18<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/issues\/the-war-is-stress-testing-airlines-endurance-under-prolonged-disruptions\/\" style=\"\">mtpa<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/issues\/the-war-is-stress-testing-airlines-endurance-under-prolonged-disruptions\/\" style=\"\"><\/a> once fully ramped up. being reminded of a hard truth: <\/strong>its gas strategy is still volatile. And, increasingly, the question is whether the Mediterranean can act as a buffer in a system defined by disruption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>In a global LNG system shaped by chokepoints<\/strong>, freight routes, and whoever is bidding high that week, stability is scarce. Since 2022, Europe has leaned heavily on LNG to backfill Russian pipeline flows \u2014 turning the Dutch TTF into the world\u2019s most watched gas benchmark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>That exposure was clear when risks around Qatari supply emerged. <\/strong>Europe sources roughly 10% of its LNG from Qatar, and even limited disruption fears pushed TTF prices up to <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/eu-natural-gas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EUR 62\/MWh<\/a>, from EUR 29\/MWh at the start of the year. Still far below the EUR 343\/MWh peak of 2022 \u2014 but a reminder of how quickly volatility feeds through.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The timing: <\/strong>EU <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/eu-not-track-fill-gas-storage-90-before-winter-2026-04-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gas storage<\/a> sat around 31% this month \u2014 its lowest since 2022 \u2014 raising concerns that the bloc may miss its 90% winter storage target, especially with disruptions around Hormuz. Filling storage to the target would require a 13% increase in LNG imports compared to last year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The dilemma:<\/strong> While the bloc has reduced dependence on Russian gas, the alternatives are not inherently stable. US LNG is increasingly tied to political and trade dynamics, while the global spot market swings with every geopolitical shock.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>That\u2019s where the Mediterranean starts to matter \u2014 not as a full replacement, but as a <\/strong><strong>stabilizer. <\/strong>Unlike long-haul LNG, North African supply offers proximity, pipeline access, and processing hubs that can bypass parts of the global bottleneck. With Algeria, Egypt, Libya, and Morocco advancing competing models, the region is becoming a strategic arena over who supplies Europe\u2019s gas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>For the non-energy crowd, the race is split along two models: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/prod\/files\/2017\/09\/f36\/Understanding%20Natural%20Gas%20and%20Lng%20Options_general%20no%20appendix.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pipelines<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/natural-gas\/liquefied-natural-gas.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supercooled<\/a> cargoes, both of which come with limitations. Pipeline trade is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/the-role-of-gas-in-todays-energy-transitions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simplest and cheapest<\/a>, but only works between connected neighbors with fixed infrastructure, while cargoes move gas in its liquefied form \u2014 a process that depends on liquefaction plants on the export side and regasification import terminals on the receiving end (which can be connected to pipelines).<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Algeria is ahead on deliverability<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>If Europe wants extra molecules in the near term, Algeria is first in line. <\/strong>State producer Sonatrach <a href=\"https:\/\/sonatrach.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Presentation-SH-EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> it already has two operating gas pipelines into Europe \u2014 one to Italy and one to Spain \u2014 with a combined transport capacity of 43 bcm per year. Algeria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/italy-hopes-receive-more-gas-algeria-meloni-says-2026-03-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supplied<\/a> about 20 bcm to Italy last year \u2014 or 30% of Italian consumption \u2014 while Spain is looking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/spain-algeria-talks-increase-pipeline-gas-supply-by-up-10-sources-say-2026-03-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">squeeze<\/a> another 10% out of the Medgaz pipeline due to the regional disruptions in the energy market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The advantage is simple:<\/strong> The pipes are already there, the customers are already there, and the relationships \u2014 especially between Eni and Sonatrach \u2014 are already in place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>A clear W from the disruptions:<\/strong> \u201cIn North Africa, Algeria is geographically distanced from the conflict, whilst also holding connections to the European market,\u201d VP and head of MENA Research at Welligence Energy Analytics Lauren Mayhew tells EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The long-term upside is obvious too:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/projects\/oil-and-gas\/algeria-to-start-construction-of-trans-saharan-gas-pipeline-after-ramadan-kd55zmet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revived<\/a> USD 13 bn Trans-Saharan gas pipeline would move some 20-30 bcm annually from Nigeria through Niger into Algeria and then onward to the European market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>But that\u2019s still future optionality, not present-day supply. <\/strong>In a scramble, the country that matters most is usually the one with spare route access and commercial credibility today \u2014 and on that score, Algeria is ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Egypt is ahead on flexibility<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Egypt\u2019s case is different, not because its domestic gas balance is comfortable (it\u2019s not)<\/strong> \u2014 but because it holds one advantage no other player in this race can match at scale: infrastructure. Egypt is one of the few players in the region that has both regasification and liquefaction facilities, which allows it the flexibility to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/02\/03\/egypt-leans-on-toll-booth-gas-hub-model-as-it-navigates-gas-shortfall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">import and export<\/a> \u2014 even while simultaneously becoming supply-constrained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>That makes it more of a processing and routing hub <\/strong>\u2014 a country capable of converting eastern Mediterranean gas into export-ready LNG and pushing it into cargoes, provided sufficient feedgas is available.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The <\/strong><strong>feedgas<\/strong><strong> is being secured:<\/strong> Egypt and Cyprus have been working for some time now to send Cypriot offshore gas to Egypt for liquefaction and re-export to Europe. Gas from the 3.7 tcf <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/04\/14\/cypriot-gas-feeds-egypts-hub-play\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aphrodite field<\/a> and 3 tcf <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2025\/10\/22\/egypt-takes-another-step-toward-bringing-in-cypriot-gas-for-liquefaction-re-export\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cronos field<\/a> will feed Egyptian facilities by 2027-2031.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Not without risk:<\/strong> This flexibility may prove temporary, however. If domestic production continues to decline, Egypt is likely to need even the gas it currently exports, forcing a shift toward prioritizing local demand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Confident, even when its own gas balance is tight:<\/strong> Energy majors like <a href=\"https:\/\/serrarigroup.com\/why-shells-vital-egypt-gas-bet-is-a-powerful-pivot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2026\/03\/31\/egypt-opens-a-fresh-europe-to-gulf-transit-corridor-via-damietta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BP<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eni.com\/en-IT\/media\/press-release\/2026\/04\/eni-unveils-2-tcf-gas-discovery-offshore-egypt-unlocking-fast-track-development-potential.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eni<\/a> are all doubling down on Egypt\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2026\/04\/09\/egypt-pays-credibility-tax-to-keep-its-energy-hub-dreams-viable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hub positioning<\/a> \u2014 expanding gas production and accelerating exploration activities in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>In a market defined by flexibility, Egypt is hard to ignore. <\/strong>While pipelines lock gas into geography, Egypt\u2019s LNG model keeps it mobile \u2014 and in a volatile system, that optionality is what Europe is paying for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Libya is the wildcard<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Libya looks strong geographically:<\/strong> Unlike the complex, capital-intensive deepwater fields in the region \u2014 like in Egypt \u2014 Libya\u2019s shallow onshore fields can be brought online quickly and developed at significantly lower production costs. The country already has a direct line into Italy through Greenstream, with Libya\u2019s national oil company aiming to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/libya-targets-europe-gas-export-boost-by-early-2030-2026-02-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lift gas production<\/a> to some 1 bscf\/d by 2030 \u2014 allowing more supply to be directed to European markets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>\u2026 but the numbers show why it\u2019s still a wildcard, not a front-runner. <\/strong>While Greenstream has an 8 bcm annual capacity, Libyan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mees.com\/2026\/1\/16\/oil-gas\/libya-gas-exports-fall-to-22-year-low\/a8ef8230-f2e2-11f0-a93a-418710887809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gas exports<\/a> to Italy fell to 105 mmcf\/d in 2025 \u2014 a 22-year low.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The country is showing renewed potential<\/strong>, with its latest post-war <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/libya-awards-new-oil-gas-blocks-chevron-eni-others-first-licensing-round-since-2026-02-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bid round<\/a> drawing interest from international oil majors such as Chevron and QatarEnergy, while Eni has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eni.com\/en-IT\/media\/press-release\/2026\/03\/pr-eni-announces-new-gas-discoveries-lybia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> more than 1 tcf of new gas discoveries offshore. Although the specific reserve volumes are modest compared to the East Mediterranean\u2019s massive fields, their shallow nature allows for faster development and lower operating costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>It carries the highest risk in the group<\/strong>, however, because the infrastructure ambitions are repeatedly disrupted by local political dynamics, a stop-start investment cycle, and a fragile production base. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/menaplus\/2026\/04\/24\/can-high-quality-oil-reserves-and-a-massive-reconstruction-opportunity-draw-global-investors-to-libya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Libya<\/a> can move from the sidebar to center stage \u2014 but only once it proves sustained operational consistency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Morocco is the long wager<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Morocco is the boldest play in the pack \u2014 and the weakest near-term supply.<\/strong> The long-stalled USD 25 bn Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline \u2014 also named the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline \u2014 is set to see an intergovernmental agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/04\/15\/nigeria-morocco-pipeline-clears-the-dust-as-mediterranean-gas-gains-demand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inked<\/a> this year, targeting up to 30 bcm annually moving through a 6.9k-km hybrid offshore-onshore line. First gas from these initial segments is scheduled for 2031.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The logic is obvious: <\/strong>Morocco wants to be a transit state, an import platform, and eventually a re-export node tied into West African gas and European demand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The problem is that Morocco is still mostly marketing infrastructure ambitions rather than bankable <\/strong><strong>gas. <\/strong>The country <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/02\/04\/today-algeria-connects-the-dots-on-iron-ore-exports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">froze<\/a> the tender process for its USD 1 bn LNG import terminal and pipeline corridor at Nador West Med Port, after revised demand and cost assumptions complicated project economics. It also still <a href=\"https:\/\/en.greentimes.ma\/natural-gas-how-morocco-is-redrawing-its-energy-map-after-the-end-of-algerian-flows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imports<\/a> most of its gas \u2014 spot market LNG is regasified at Spanish terminals and pumped through the Gaz Maghreb pipeline \u2014 with current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/moroccos-energy-ministry-puts-gas-pipeline-project-hold-2026-02-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demand<\/a> at about 1 bcm and projections of 8 bcm by 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The finish line<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>So, who is best positioned? <\/strong>For immediate incremental supply into Europe, our take is that Algeria is ahead \u2014 because it already has operational pipeline capacity and commercial relationships. Egypt is ahead, given its operational liquefaction plants, with Cypriot gas increasingly being structured around them. Libya represents the upside case if production stabilizes, while Morocco is the longer-term strategic transit play, with a commercial case that materializes later.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The broader point is that the Mediterranean can be Europe\u2019s next gas hedge \u2014 but not its sole solution. <\/strong>US LNG supply is still capturing all the upside from the disruptions \u2014 and is too large to displace \u2014 while the bloc\u2019s decarbonization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acer.europa.eu\/monitoring\/MMR\/LNG_market_developments_2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">policy<\/a> still puts a clock on long-lived gas answers, with a dual strategy that cuts gas demand structurally, while securing flexible supplies that reduce exposure to spot volatility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>That\u2019s exactly why the Med matters now:<\/strong> It offers Europe a portfolio rather than a single replacement. Algerian pipes, Egyptian liquefaction, Libyan optionality, and a Moroccan corridor.
