The Iran war is reshaping energy markets in less obvious ways, with natural gas \u2014 not oil \u2014 taking the bigger hit as supply tightens and agreements get harder to strike. Hormuz disruptions are also starting to squeeze jet fuel flows, and airlines are already feeling it \u2014 but the question is, how long can operations hold if the supply crunch deepens?<\/p>\n<hr style=\"page-break-before:always;display:none;\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The big story abroad<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Washington <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-25\/trump-faces-fresh-iran-demands-as-he-looks-to-jump-start-talks?srnd=homepage-middle-east\" style=\"\">maintains<\/a><\/strong><strong> that peace talks with Iran are ongoing<\/strong>, despite Tehran roundly rejecting the ceasefire proposal put forward by the Trump administration. The Islamic Republic is reportedly looking to secure assurances that the US-Israeli assault will not resume, reparations for war-related damage, and recognition of its authority over the Strait of Hormuz. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\"> From the Dept. of Ongoing Disruptions<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>EVENTS<\/strong><strong> \u2014 Plans put on hold:<\/strong> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marinemoney.com\/events-2-0-2\/2026-gulf-ship-finance-forum\" style=\"\">Dubai\u2019s Marine Money<\/a> event \u2014 originally scheduled for 26 March \u2014 has been postponed in light of recent developments in the region. No new date has been announced by the organizers yet. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Watch this space<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a>  <\/strong><strong>LNG<\/strong> <strong>\u2014 Qatar\u2019s LNG disruption is now spilling into contracts:<\/strong> QatarEnergy said it needs to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/qatarenergy-declares-force-majeure-lng-contracts-2026-03-24\/\" style=\"\">declare<\/a> force majeure on some affected long-term LNG contracts \u2014 including buyers from Italy, Belgium, South Korea, and China.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The physical hit was already severe:<\/strong> Two LNG trains at Ras Laffan are offline after <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/03\/24\/energy-infrastructure-airports-targeted-over-the-eid-break\/\" style=\"\">Iranian<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/03\/24\/energy-infrastructure-airports-targeted-over-the-eid-break\/\" style=\"\">strikes<\/a> took around 12.8 mtpa out of commission, roughly 17% of Qatar\u2019s LNG export capacity. Qatar\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/qatars-role-global-gas-market-2026-03-19\/\" style=\"\">share<\/a> in the market makes it especially hard to absorb, since it\u2019s the world\u2019s second biggest exporter of LNG.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Can Algeria fill Qatar\u2019s shoes? <\/strong>Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/61ac03a0-83b9-4f02-99cd-b2a19885450d\" style=\"\">looking<\/a> to Algeria for substitute gas supplies after Qatar\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/qatarenergy-declares-force-majeure-lng-contracts-2026-03-24\/\" style=\"\">force majeure<\/a> affected its LNG contract with Italy. Qatar accounted for about 33% of Italy\u2019s LNG imports last year. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why Algeria? It\u2019s the fastest pipe option Italy knows how to use.<\/strong> Algeria is already Italy\u2019s main gas supplier, covering around 36% of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/61ac03a0-83b9-4f02-99cd-b2a19885450d\" style=\"\">annual gas needs<\/a> last year, with flows anchored by the TransMed pipeline. The two parties <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/italy-algeria-boost-cooperation-with-new-security-business-deals-2025-07-23\/\" style=\"\">signed<\/a> a fresh batch of agreements last July worth some EUR 14 bn, including in energy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Algeria may be the logical substitute, but not an unlimited one.<\/strong> Analysts have <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/61ac03a0-83b9-4f02-99cd-b2a19885450d?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" style=\"\">flagged<\/a> that Algeria may have trouble meeting demand as its domestic demand rises. Rome is also talking to the US and Azerbaijan instead of relying on Algeria as a full replacement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a>  <\/strong><strong>M&As \u2014 <\/strong><strong>Canada\u2019s<\/strong><strong> pipeline push is starting to pull Gulf capital into the <\/strong><strong>room.<\/strong> Middle Eastern sovereign funds and Asian investors have shown early-stage interest in taking minority stakes in a proposed 1 mn bpd crude pipeline to British Columbia\u2019s northwest coast, ahead of a planned federal fast-track request in June, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/ceraweek-canadas-pipeline-plan-attracts-middle-eastern-asian-interest-alberta-2026-03-23\/\" style=\"\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing comments by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. The project remains uncommitted, but reflects Canada\u2019s efforts to diversify exports toward Asia and away from the US, which still takes around 90% of its crude exports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why now? <\/strong>The war has increased the strategic value of oil and gas supplies that bypass the Strait of Hormuz, as disruptions there tighten global markets. At CERAWeek, Alberta is positioning itself as a secure and geopolitically stable energy supplier, just as higher prices and supply risks boost demand for Canadian exports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>At the same time<\/strong>, both Ottawa and Alberta are working to accelerate project approvals and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/release.cfm?xID=95316BDF2757A-B5C7-C364-6498DC1D01A6CF64\" style=\"\">expand export infrastructure<\/a>, particularly pipelines to the Pacific Coast. This creates a chance for Middle Eastern investors to diversify geographically, gaining exposure to stable North American production while reducing reliance on Hormuz-linked export routes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a> <\/strong><strong>ENERGY<\/strong><strong> \u2014 Japan is moving deeper into emergency mode. <\/strong>Tokyo will start <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/japan-start-releasing-oil-joint-stockpiles-by-end-march-pm-says-2026-03-24\/\" style=\"\">releasing<\/a> crude from its national reserves today, while releases from joint stockpiles held with producing nations are scheduled by the end of March, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said in a post on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/takaichi_sanae\/status\/2036250176973922637\" style=\"\">X<\/a>. The move will take Japan\u2019s total contribution to the International Energy Agency emergency release to nearly 80 mn barrels of crude, as the Hormuz disruption keeps pressing on Asian importers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Asia feeling the pressure:<\/strong> Missing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/03\/24\/what-replaces-gulf-crude-when-the-barrels-go-missing\/\" style=\"\">Gulf barrels hurt Asia first<\/a>, and the fallback options are weak. Rather than a unified network, the region\u2019s gas trade consists of fragmented, bilateral <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">systems<\/a> shaped by political and commercial ties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>It also ultimately comes down to response time:<\/strong> LNG export terminals are capital-intensive, technically complex, and slow to repair once damaged or shut. Earlier this month, in the first reactions to the disruptions, Brent futures rose 8%, while the TTF was trading up by 19%. Oil prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/live\/2026\/mar\/24\/brent-crude-oil-100-dollars-a-barrel-middle-east-iran-stock-markets-economic-growth-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-69c2a8428f089e6ac8d2fa8b#block-69c2a8428f089e6ac8d2fa8b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rose<\/a> by some 40% since January, with natural gas contracts up by around 80%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Spot demand is a source of tension<\/strong>, with Europe and Asia bidding against each other for the same flexible cargoes, sending prices soaring. Import-dependent buyers without long-term cover will feel it first, and as demand rises, sellers will face a simple calculation \u2014 honor a lower-priced long-term contract or pay the penalty and capture a fatter margin in the spot market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The loss of volume to the energy market creates an imbalance of supply and demand<\/strong>, specifically for Asian consumers, founder of JHT consulting and former VP and Managing Director for Black &amp; Veatch Javid Talib tells EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The market demand will get tempered<\/strong>, since there is no immediate replacement for the lost volume coming online, Talib tells us, noting that the supply side of the market will be rebalancing their available short term\/spot volume distribution to take advantage of higher LNG pricing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Timing made things worse<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Gas walked into the shock already stretched:<\/strong> Global gas demand has been growing faster than oil over the past decade \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-energy-review-2025\/key-findings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demand<\/a> for oil rose by 0.8% in 2024 compared to 2.7% for natural gas \u2014 driven by rising power demand. LNG demand alone is expected to rise from 422 mn tons in 2025 to some 650-710 mn tons by 2040 \u2014 a 54-68% rise \u2014 with Asia driving around 70% of that growth, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/global-lng-demand-rise-least-54-by-2040-shell-says-2026-03-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The LNG market has limited short-term swing supply.<\/strong> New liquefaction projects in the US and elsewhere are ramping up, but they cannot instantly offset a large Gulf disruption. They relayed that there were no issues in terms of aviation fuel shortages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>But how deep does that buffer really run? Industry insiders have their worries. <\/strong>\u201cEgypt is not well protected in a prolonged disruption because it relies on imported oil,\u201d warns Avaero Capital Partners Principal Managing Partner Sindy Foster in comments to EnterpriseAM. This reliance in times of stress becomes an issue because flows may not always be consistently available, which does not work well with the aviation industry\u2019s need for \u201chigh-volume, continuous, and reliably financed supply,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The real risk: financial sustainability<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Availability is only half of the story: <\/strong>A prolonged disruption would not only test the availability of fuel, but also whether airlines can continue securing and paying for jet fuel at scale. For Egypt, \u201cthe real economic risk is sustainability. Over time, this becomes a question of whether airlines can secure and pay for fuel at scale, in foreign currency, without eroding already thin margins,\u201d Foster adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Where the pressure lands first<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The first fault line is fares and margins:<\/strong> Jet fuel now accounts for 30% to 40% of African airline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/african-airlines-face-soaring-costs-jet-fuel-supply-dwindles-2026-03-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">operating costs<\/a>, compared to the global average of 20% to 25% \u2014 and at some low-cost carriers, it is reaching 50% to 55% of direct operating costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Fuel stress will push network decisions: <\/strong>\u201cFor African and Egyptian carriers, the immediate pressure from higher fuel costs is as much about network economics as it is about pricing \u2014 longer routings and fuel burn force airlines to rethink which city pairs remain viable,\u201d Richard Maslen, head of analysis at the Center for Aviation, told EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\">\u201c<strong>Fares will inevitably rise, but the perishable nature of a seat means pricing can only <\/strong><strong>stretch so far<\/strong>,\u201d Maslen adds, \u201cso airlines are more likely to balance modest fare increases with tighter capacity discipline, fuel surcharges, and refined yield management rather than relying on price alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The next strain will show up in operations: <\/strong>\u201cWhat fuel pressure does is tighten an already stressed system. If supply becomes less reliable, airlines cannot operate schedules exactly as planned. That leads to delays, payload restrictions, route adjustments, and selective cancellations, particularly on weaker routes,\u201d Foster notes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>A fuel shock would turn Egypt\u2019s aviation market into a hierarchy test. <\/strong>\u201cA prolonged jet fuel squeeze therefore feeds directly into utilization and network design \u2014 marginal routes are trimmed, frequencies adjusted, and aircraft redeployed to stronger flows,\u201d Maslen said. To feed these planned projects, a set of incentives to help make used cooking oil collection projects more financially viable and collect 1 mn tons annually is being prepared, Waste Management Regulatory Authority Chairman Yasser Abdullah tells us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">A reshaped map if the crisis drags on<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>If the regional war continues<\/strong>, African carriers and hubs could find room to capture traffic flows that have historically bypassed the continent, Maslen added.
