Restoring flows could enable Iraq to ship up to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2026\/03\/18\/iraq-to-resume-oil-exports-via-turkeys-ceyhan-port-amid-regional-tensions\/\" style=\"\">250k bbl\/d<\/a> from Kirkuk\u2019s northern fields, with potential to add another 200k bbl\/d from the Kurdistan region \u2014 bringing total volumes near 450k bbl\/d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But Hormuz isn\u2019t out of the equation yet.<\/strong> Iraq <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/iraq-talks-with-iran-safeguard-oil-tanker-traffic-through-hormuz-2026-03-17\/\" style=\"\">is in talks<\/a> with Iran to allow some tankers safe passage through the strait following attacks in Iraqi waters. Brent crude futures eased USD 2.26 to USD 101.16 \/ bbl by 03.57 GMT after climbing 3% on Tuesday, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) declined USD 2.99 to USD 93.22 \/ bbl.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a> <\/strong><strong>Meanwhile<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> <strong>Middle East crude benchmarks are printing record highs: <\/strong>Dubai hit USD 153.25 \/ bbl for May loading cargoes, while Oman futures touched USD 147.79 \/ bbl, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/middle-east-oil-benchmarks-hit-record-highs-war-cuts-supply-2026-03-16\/\" style=\"\">Reuters<\/a> reports citing Platts. The premium to Dubai swaps surged to USD 56 \/bbl from just USD 0.90 in February, with Oman showing a similar spike. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The demand side is already reacting: <\/strong>Crude flows to Asia dropped to 11.7 mn bbl \/ d in March from some 19 mn bbl \/ d in February. With Dubai pricing the bulk of Gulf crude into Asia, the spike is forcing buyers to either hunt alternatives or simply process less. Meanwhile, the spread with Murban, sitting at USD 111.76 \/ bbl, is stretching credibility, exposing how disconnected the benchmark has become from actual tradeable barrels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The physical market is collapsing underneath the benchmark:<\/strong> Exports <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/ar\/business\/CWITEJWWRVO4VNJXPNOQXEBKOE-2026-03-16\/\" style=\"\">fell<\/a> by some 60-70% by this week vs February levels, with flows dropping to as low as 7.5-9.7 mn bbl \/ d from some 25-26 mn bbl \/ d. Producers are shutting in output as storage fills up \u2014 with floating storage swelling to more than 50 mn barrels from some 10 mn pre war \u2014 forcing cuts estimated at 7-10 mn bbl \/ d across the region. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The real issue sits inside the benchmark itself \u2014 a shrinking pool of trades is setting the <\/strong><strong>global prices. <\/strong>Platts dropped three grades tied to Hormuz flows, leaving Oman and Murban to anchor the pricing window. Traders say the Market on Close window is effectively dominated by a single buyer, with TotalEnergies lifting 24 cargoes, or 12 mn bbl this month \u2014 enough to shape the curve. Platts is now reviewing its methodology. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The Baltic Index breaks losing streak: <\/strong>The Baltic Exchange\u2019s dry bulk index \u2014 which tracks rates for the capesize, panamax, and supramax vessel segments \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/baltic\" style=\"\">fell 0.7%<\/a> to 2,024 points on Wednesday. A single VLCC carries some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=17991\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 mn barrels<\/a>, while a road tanker carries around <a href=\"https:\/\/engineerfix.com\/how-many-barrels-are-in-a-tanker-truck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/engineerfix.com\/how-many-barrels-are-in-a-tanker-truck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">90-300<\/a> barrels \u2014 meaning 8k-10k trucks, and a lot of trips to match a single cargo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>What\u2019s changing is not the system \u2014 it\u2019s the geometry of power behind it: <\/strong>\u201cThe shift underway is less about replacing Hormuz and more about redistributing risk, access, and leverage across multiple routes \u2014 pipelines, Red Sea ports, inland corridors \u2014 rather than concentrating in a single narrow waterway,\u201d former head of supply chain and transport industries at the World Economic Forum Wolfgang Lehmacher tells EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The model is shifting: <\/strong>Instead of relying on one optimal route, trade is moving toward a portfolio approach, where redundancy is built in to absorb shocks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">What is being activated now<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>A south-east corridor: <\/strong>Dubai Customs has introduced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dubaicustoms.gov.ae\/ar\/PoliciesAndNotices\/Notices\/CN4_2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temporary<\/a> corridor between Dubai and Oman to expedite customs procedures for sea and air cargo. Shipments originally bound for Dubai\u2019s Jebel Ali Port or Dubai International Airport are rerouted through Omani ports and airports, then transported via bonded trucks through the Hatta-Al Wajajah border crossing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>And more rerouting through Oman\u2026<\/strong> <strong>Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) will reroute its aluminum<\/strong><strong> exports and raw <\/strong><strong>materials through Oman\u2019s port of Sohar<\/strong> in the coming days to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, three sources told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/ega-export-aluminium-via-oman-amid-gulf-disruption-sources-say-2026-03-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>. Heavy trucking for containers can run around <a href=\"https:\/\/uic.org\/IMG\/pdf\/2022_report_on_combined_transport_in_europe.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EUR 0.11 per ton-km<\/a>, vs a fraction of that cost for maritime transport thanks to massive economies of scale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The limiting factor<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>It\u2019s not just \u201cput it on a truck\u201d:<\/strong> A landbridge requires transit declarations, customs seal, and document verification, which compresses the pool of eligible operators and adds administrative load.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Road capacity is not just asphalt:<\/strong> Road freight costs also include driver and fuel costs plus intermediate-node costs like border crossings and security checkpoints \u2014 exactly the stuff that balloons when you move from steady-state trade to emergency surges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>And the risk doesn\u2019t disappear:<\/strong> Every new corridor can itself become a chokepoint if built in isolation, Lehmacher said \u2014 meaning shifting flows from sea to land doesn\u2019t eliminate vulnerability, it redistributes it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">What\u2019s next<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>A routing war on the logistical front? <\/strong>Ports outside Hormuz \u2014 mainly in Oman \u2014 gain relevance as discharge points and staging hubs, while Red Sea gateways get a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/03\/12\/the-disruption-in-hormuz-is-giving-the-red-sea-a-second-chance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second chance<\/a> at capturing flows if cross-peninsula corridors hold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>But this isn\u2019t \u2014 or shouldn\u2019t be \u2014 a zero-sum race for a single dominant hub:<\/strong> \u201cIn a world of weaponised interdependence, there is more value in a connected Middle Eastern platform of interoperable hubs \u2013 Jeddah, Yanbu, Dammam, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Salalah, Aqaba and others \u2013 than in a race where everyone tries to become \u201cthe\u201d hub,\u201d Lehmacher noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The longer this lasts, the stickier it gets: <\/strong>Once routes are redesigned, cargo doesn\u2019t automatically snap back \u2014 the winners could hold that position long after the crisis ends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Our take<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The underlying model is already changing:<\/strong> We are moving from an era of narrow optimization to an era of strategic redundancy, where resilient efficiency \u2014 not minimal cost \u2014 defines a well\u2011designed network.
