And while the UAE works on expanding its autonomous logistics sector, more global players are securing big bucks for their expansion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The big logistics story abroad<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Autonomous trucking tech startup <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/waabi.ai\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Waabi<\/a><\/strong> <strong> raised <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-01-28\/self-driving-trucking-startup-waabi-raises-1-billion-expands-to-robotaxis?srnd=phx-industries-transportation\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 1 bn<\/a><\/strong><strong> to expand operations<\/strong>, marking the third major funding round for a global autonomous logistics player in just one month. China-based heavy trucking tech startup DeepWay Tech <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/01\/27\/today-ibnsinas-logistics-operation-secures-ebrd-backing\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">secured<\/a> USD 173 mn in funds ahead of a planned IPO, and the US-based drone delivery startup Zipline <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/01\/22\/today-omans-solar-ambitions-get-a-usd-1-6-bn-manufacturing-boost\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">raised<\/a> USD 600 mn. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The breakdown: <\/strong>The Toronto-based outfit raised USD 750 mn in the Series C round, which included venture capital arms of automotive majors like Volvo, as well as Khosla Ventures and G2 Venture Partners. Uber is also injecting USD 250 mn into Waabi to back its entry into the robotaxis segment. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ALSO- The UK is seeking a reset with China amid tensions with the US<\/strong>, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/01\/28\/2026\/starmer-brings-uk-executives-on-china-visit\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">to be joined by execs from top banks<\/a> and manufacturers when he lands in China today. This comes as many Western players are doubling down on China as the US grows more unreliable as a trading partner. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Watch this space<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a><strong>TRADE \u2014 Jordan is raising its gas supplies to Syria<\/strong>, after <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nepco.com.jo\/NewsDetails.aspx?q=WXI9MjAyNiZTZXI9NjE=\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">inking<\/a> a purchase agreement for flows of 140 mmcf\/d. The gas will initially be supplied via the Egypt-chartered regasification unit Energos Force, currently docked at the Aqaba terminal in Jordan, until March. Before this new agreement, Jordan had <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aawsat.com\/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%82%D8%AA%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%AF\/5233823-%D8%B3%D9%88%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A7-%D8%AA%D9%88%D9%82%D8%B9-%D8%A7%D8%AA%D9%81%D8%A7%D9%82%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%85%D8%B9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%B1%D8%AF%D9%86-%D9%84%D8%B4%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%A1-140-%D9%85%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%88%D9%86-%D9%82%D8%AF%D9%85-%D9%85%D9%83%D8%B9%D8%A8%D8%A9-%D9%85%D9%86-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%BA%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B7%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%B9%D9%8A\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">earmarked<\/a> 30-90 mmcf\/d for Syria-bound exports. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Tracing the exact origin of the gas is tricky, given the complex nature of the current <\/strong><strong>Syria-bound supplies. <\/strong>For example, we know Egypt is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/issues\/syria-ramps-up-gas-imports-as-egypt-activates-export-pact-to-levant\/?repeat=w3tc#91792\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">re-exporting<\/a> approximately 50 mmcf\/d to Syria through Jordanian territories via the Arab Gas Pipeline (AGP), with the volume originating from a blend of sources, Ross Cassidy, VP of MENA Research at Welligence Energy Analytics, previously told us. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We also know that Qatar is a backer of the Jordan-routed gas supplies to Syria<\/strong>, after inking an agreement last March to finance the flows. The agreement earmarked 30-90 mmcf\/d, with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/syria-jordan-sign-gas-supply-deal-bolster-syrian-power-grid-2026-01-26\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> at the time indicating that Jordan would receive the gas in liquefied form before regasifying it at Aqaba and sending it to Syria through the AGP. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a><strong>PORTS \u2014 <\/strong><strong>Egypt<\/strong><strong> wants US operators in its ports. <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s Industry Minister Kamel El Wazir has called on American firms to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/pfbid02Em3o3oELJBeqNoRDkg7n5Lnkp1qBMe6Gz86gDG5iRn4ff4U5wgedUMUqVBHCY2cZl\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">invest in Egyptian<\/a> ports during a meeting earlier this week with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. The invitation \u2014 which Landau welcomed \u2014 aligns with Washington\u2019s recent efforts to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2025\/09\/17\/us-on-global-crusade-to-wrest-control-of-strategic-ports-from-china\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">challenge Chinese dominance<\/a> in global waterways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This isn\u2019t the first time Egypt pitches port investments to the US. <\/strong>A <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eg.usembassy.gov\/u-s-ambassador-leads-business-delegation-to-egyptian-ports\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">previous<\/a> US delegation, led by Ambassador Herro Mustafa Garg, toured several Egyptian ports in September \u2014 including Alexandria, Damietta, Port Said, and Ain Sokhna \u2014 and had initially signaled interest in the sector in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eg.usembassy.gov\/u-s-and-egyptian-governments-promote-business-opportunities-for-u-s-companies-in-egyptian-port-and-logistics-sectors\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">April<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The geopolitical context: <\/strong>The news comes amid ongoing political tension between the US and China, with both countries vying for key trade outposts amid <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2025\/09\/17\/us-on-global-crusade-to-wrest-control-of-strategic-ports-from-china\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">mounting concerns in DC<\/a> that the US could face major logistics disadvantages if military conflict erupts. China maintains a large presence along the Suez Canal and its adjacent ports \u2014 including the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.setc-zone.com\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese-operated Teda Industrial Zone<\/a> in Ain Sokhna, which was earmarked for USD 1.2 bn worth of fresh investments just <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2025\/12\/24\/chinese-manufacturers-are-investing-another-usd-1-2-bn-in-manufacturing-here\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a><\/strong><strong>DISRUPTION WATCH \u2014 Severe weather is <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/maersk-says-severe-weather-disrupts-cargo-flows-europe-2026-01-28\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">disrupting<\/a><\/strong> <strong> cargo flows and forcing shutdowns<\/strong><strong> of container terminals in Europe. <\/strong>\u201cThis situation is affecting the entire industry, and due to the severity and uncertainty of the conditions, we expect delays and closures to continue to impact vessels and terminals across the board,\" Maersk said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Who\u2019s impacted?<\/strong> Portugal and Spain were among the hardest hit under severe weather warnings yesterday, while Italy declared a state of emergency on Monday after last week\u2019s violent storm pushed water inland. The continent\u2019s utilization of PET in 2022 reached 5 mn tons, with PET production of just 3.9 mn tons \u2014 and this is well before the shutdown of the Rotterdam site.
