The goal is a 15% annual growth in exports to narrow the trade deficit. This could be even more attainable if the country\u2019s plan to slash customs clearance times from eight days to just 48 hours succeeds. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top:12pt;margin:0;padding-left:0;padding-bottom:12pt;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left;padding-right:0\"><strong>On a regional note, <\/strong>some of our transshipment hubs are facing a taxing new reality as the EU\u2019s maritime carbon tax rules enter full enforcement this year. Egypt\u2019s East Port Said and Morocco\u2019s Tanger are the only two regional ports currently on the EU\u2019s high-risk list for evasive rerouting, meaning ships calling there still face heavy carbon costs \u2014 covering about 50% of the long-haul voyage\u2019s emissions \u2014 in contrast to non-listed ports.<strong> The silver lining?<\/strong> This could fast-track the region\u2019s green bunkering industry, as e-methanol becomes the primary tool for shipping lines looking to offset penalties while maintaining their EU routes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The big logistics story abroad<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>India and the EU have finally <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2219065\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">inked<\/a><\/strong> <strong> the long-awaited freetrade agreement (FTA)<\/strong>. The agreement will slash Indian tariffs on 90% of EU exports to zero immediately, excluding automobiles, whose tariffs will fall gradually from 110% to 10% over five years. Meanwhile, the EU will also cut its duties on more than 90% of Indian goods at launch. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>BUT- India failed to secure any concessions or a carbon tax exemption despite its strong <\/strong><strong>push.<\/strong> Still, India secured limited steel quota access, and a new technical group will be set up to assist Indian firms in verifying their carbon footprints as the EU's <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/taxation-customs.ec.europa.eu\/carbon-border-adjustment-mechanism_en\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">strict green rules<\/a> took effect in January this year. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We\u2019re expecting more FTAs across the world this year<\/strong>, as more players work to hedge against the US\u2019 trade volatility and seek more predictable trading partners. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ALSO- US airports are still reeling from a winter storm that struck most of the <\/strong><strong>country this week<\/strong>, with American Airlines alone <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=US+flights+cancelation+tuesday&sca_esv=0bd1decbe45b1982&rlz=1C1GCEB_enEG1130EG1130&tbm=nws&sxsrf=ANbL-n4AtYOTp-lTd7tSr7XnSfiIKCH2Tw:1769578638810&source=lnt&tbs=qdr:d&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiJl6yRwq2SAxVzhf0HHfyGDxsQpwV6BAgDEAc&biw=1536&bih=703&dpr=1.25&aic=0\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">canceling<\/a> at least some 1.4k flights yesterday. The disruption <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/winter-storm-snarls-us-travel-forces-mass-flight-cancellations-2026-01-26\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">peaked<\/a> on Sunday (11k cancelations) \u2013\u2013 the highest number since the pandemic \u2014 before slightly improving on Monday (6k cancelations). <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- De-icing agents, critical chemicals used to de-ice runways and aircraft, <\/strong><strong>have been in shortage earlier this year, <\/strong>as more frequent and severe winter storms raise the demand. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Watch this space<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a>DATA CENTERS \u2014 <\/strong><strong>Sharjah advances in the data race: <\/strong>UAE\u2019s Sharjah is eyeing more data infrastructure after a tripartite MoU was signed to explore building and operating data centers in the emirate, state news agency <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/article\/byf7ynh-sultan-bin-ahmed-witnesses-agreement-signing\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Wam<\/a> reports. The pact links the Sharjah Communications Technology Authority (SCTA) with China\u2019s DataCanvas International and AI Caravan to assess feasibility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why it matters: <\/strong>This puts Sharjah on a clearer path to becoming a data and AI hub alongside Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The move builds on groundwork laid <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2024\/11\/14\/dp-world-opens-london-gateway-berth\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">in 2024<\/a>, when Beeah Group, Khazna Data Centers, and SCTA agreed to develop the emirate\u2019s largest Tier III facility at the Sharjah Freezone for Communication Technologies in Kalba, with additional sites planned across the emirate. Elsewhere, UAE-based XDS was commissioning a 1 MW data facility in Sharjah as of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/activity-7357605527524122625-t9m_?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAADox4C4BEF2M1OJkaewcVSH_nzAS8pYnVQA\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last summer<\/a>, and Ajman is also seeing some of the action, with Khazna Data Centers working to complete <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/uae\/2025\/10\/15\/data-center-capacity-to-nearly-triple-in-the-next-three-years-emirates-nbd\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">its 100 MW QAJ1 facility<\/a> this December.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a>TRADE \u2014 Jordan, Syria, and Turkey are working on reviving cross-border trade flows<\/strong>, and are setting up a joint committee to oversee collaboration on land, air, and rail links under an MoU <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gov.jo\/Ar\/NewsDetails\/am0622\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed<\/a> earlier this week. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>All eyes on MENA-Europe volumes: <\/strong>Syria\u2019s reintegration in the global and regional economies in the post-Assad era is bringing back to life stalled logistics project that could provide an alternative route to Europe-MENA trade flows. These include the Hejaz railway connecting Turkey to Jordan\u2019s Aqaba Port through Syria \u2014 a project that the three countries agreed to revive <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2025\/10\/21\/today-new-qfz-dhl-logistics-facility-at-ras-bufontas\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">back in September<\/a> a 13-year hiatus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This should not come as a surprise<\/strong>, given the intense efforts over the past six months to remove trade barriers. This included the introduction of the unified transit fees <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sana.sy\/en\/syria\/361331\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">agreement<\/a> between Syria and Jordan, which reduced transit fees to a unified rate of 2%, down from 5%. Ankara is also actively seeking direct overland access to the Gulf through the Levant in a bid to avoid longer transits through the Sea. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>AVIATION \u2014 <\/strong><strong>Boeing <\/strong><strong>returned to black in 2025: <\/strong>US-based aviation giant Boeing turned a positive net income of USD 2.2 bn in 2025 \u2014 a stunning reversal from the year prior, in which it recorded USD 11.8 bn in losses, according to an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investors.boeing.com\/investors\/news\/press-release-details\/2026\/Boeing-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-Results\/default.aspx\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">earnings release<\/a>. Offloading Jeppesen, Boeing\u2019s software services arm, to Thoma Bravo in a transaction valued at USD 10.6 bn <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investors.boeing.com\/investors\/news\/press-release-details\/2025\/Boeing-to-Sell-Portions-of-Digital-Aviation-Solutions-to-Thoma-Bravo-for-10-55-Billion\/default.aspx\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">back in April<\/a> also contributed positively. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Market watch<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Oil prices rose this morning as weather-driven disruptions in the US production <\/strong><strong>continued to weigh on the market outlook<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/oil-slips-even-us-winter-storm-curbs-crude-output-2026-01-27\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports. Brent crude futures were up USD 0.28 to trade at USD 67.85 \/ bbl as of 04:10 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) decreased by USD 0.35 to USD 62.74 \/ bbl. This came after the benchmarks rallied by some 3% on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The Baltic Index just had a great day: <\/strong>The Baltic Exchange\u2019s dry bulk sea freight index \u2014 which tracks rates for the capesize, panamax, and supramax vessel segments \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/baltic\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/baltic\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">jumped 12%<\/a> to 1,999 points on Tuesday, its strongest level since 19 December. The capesize added a robust 22.4% to reach 3,215 points, while the panamax index edged up 0.8% to 1,625. Meanwhile, the smaller supramax rose by 0.4% to 1,039. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Data point<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>3k+ aircraft \u2014 that\u2019s the cumulative order backlog held by the UAE, India, and Saudi <\/strong><strong>Arabia with Airbus and Boeing<\/strong>, more than double the size of their current fleets, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.avolon.aero\/newsrooms\/avolon-2026-outlook-up-next\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from Avolon. Around 900 deliveries are expected over the next three years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The global scene: <\/strong>While the aviation sector\u2019s prospects are looking promising, thanks to persistent low fuel prices and growth from markets like the US, Europe, the Gulf, and India, a chronic undersupply of aircraft is weighing on the outlook. \u2014 and our region\u2019s transshipment flows may be impacted in the process.<\/strong> As of January 2026, the EU\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/climate.ec.europa.eu\/eu-action\/carbon-markets\/about-eu-ets_en\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Emissions Trading System (ETS)<\/a> on maritime effectively transitions to full enforcement, covering 100% of ships\u2019 emissions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The regulatory lay of the land: <\/strong>The ETS is effectively a carbon tax or a cap and trade system that requires shipping companies to purchase allowances for 100% of emissions generated on voyages within the EU and 50% on voyages to, or from, the bloc. This is different from the FuelEU Maritime, which is more of a mandate-driven set of rules that require cutting emissions by displacing dirtier fuels and raising energy efficiency. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/transport.ec.europa.eu\/transport-modes\/maritime\/decarbonising-maritime-transport-fueleu-maritime_en#:~:text=FuelEU%20maritime%20sets%20maximum%20limits,AFIR%2C%20from%201%20January%202030.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">FuelEU Maritime<\/a> entered into force in 2025 with a 2% emission reduction target \u2014 which is set to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dnv.com\/maritime\/insights\/topics\/fueleu-maritime\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">hit 6%<\/a> in 2030 before rising gradually to reach 80% by 2050.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>How does this impact our region? <\/strong>To prevent losing volumes to non-EU transhipment hubs and evasive rerouting \u2014 where ships may fake port calls outside Europe to reset their tax clock \u2014 the EU set up a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/ALL\/?uri=CELEX%3A32025R1127&utm_\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">list<\/a> of high-risk neighboring container transhipment ports. Egypt\u2019s East Port Said, alongside Morocco\u2019s Tanger, are the only ports currently on that list. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But why these ports specifically? <\/strong>Both ports met the outlined regulatory requirements of having over 65% of their traffic classified as transhipment and being located within 300 nautical miles of an EU port.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What does this mean for East Port Said + Tanger? <\/strong>If a ship stops in East Port Said or Tanger while en route to, or from, the EU, the shipping line would still be required to account for 50% of the larger long-haul voyage. This might make the ports less attractive for transhipment routes, especially if other ports in the neighborhood can offer a haven. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>DATA POINTS- <\/strong>East Port Said port is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/hardhats\/a-look-at-east-port-said-port-development-plans\/#:~:text=(Tap%20or%20click%20the%20headline,from%20the%20port%20told%20EnterpriseAM.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">critical to our transhipment flows<\/a>, with about 79% of Egypt\u2019s total transshipment trade going through it as of 2024. The port\u2019s container terminal \u2014 which currently boasts a 7 mn TEUs capacity after expansions \u2014 handled about <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apmterminals.com\/en\/scct\/media\/news\/2025\/250108-scct-2024-review\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">4 mn TEUs<\/a> in 2024. For Morocco, transhipment is also critical for its ports industry, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atalayar.com\/en\/articulo\/economy-and-business\/moroccos-port-traffic-grows-by-153-in-the-first-half-of-2024\/20240829114940204616.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">accounting<\/a> for some 48% of the annual handled volumes in 2023.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why does this matter? Well, there will be gainers and losers.<\/strong> Ports in Saudi Arabia, the UAE could emerge as natural breaks in a voyage, allowing shipping lines to reset their tax liability before heading to, or from, the EU. One possibility would be the emergence of other Egypt and Morocco-based container terminals, like Egypt\u2019s Alexandria and Sokhna or Morocco\u2019s Nador West Med (NWM), as alternatives to East Port Said and Tanger. In both scenarios, a blacklisted port\u2019s transhipment volume could take a hit if shipping lines decide to reroute. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But there might be a silver lining, after all: <\/strong>These developments may also be good news for Egypt\u2019s green bunkering ambitions despite <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/goinggreens\/our-green-bunkering-ambitions-are-at-risk-amid-global-headwinds-here-is-what-experts-say-we-should-do\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">growing headwinds<\/a>. Starting this year, the ETS now requires shipping companies to account for nitrous and methane emissions, raising the cost of compliance for LNG-powered vessels that serve Europe. In that scenario, e-methanol \u2014 which Egypt already plans to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/goinggreens\/egypt-could-play-a-key-role-in-the-maritime-industrys-decarbonization\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">produce in East Port Said<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/shipandbunker.com\/news\/emea\/280458-cma-cgm-to-take-on-synthetic-lng-and-methanol-in-morocco\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Morocco in NWM<\/a>, could emerge as the biggest winner in the low-carbon fuels competition. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why e-methanol? <\/strong>A single ship powered by e-methanol can offset enough emissions to bail out the penalties of 10 standard ships on the same trip, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lr.org\/en\/knowledge\/research-reports\/2024\/optimising-compliance-under-the-eus-new-regime\/?creative=727629462204&keyword=fueleu%20maritime&matchtype=p&network=g&device=c&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=&utm_term=fueleu%20maritime&gad_source=1\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by Lloyd's Register.
