In a market that runs, leans, and tracks forward assumptions, losing the anchor supplier forces the world into a pricing contest. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong> \u201cStopping production means you implicitly believe that you will have a tank-top problem, so you will have an issue of not being able to off-take all the production because you obviously have a limited amount of storage,\u201d Jean-Christian Heintz, Wideangle LNG consulting director, previously told EnterpriseAM. \u201cIt also means that you are ready to undergo a potentially very long and costly restart process, as generally those plants are not designed for being shut down. It\u2019s quite a big move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The backbone of the game:<\/strong> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/qatars-role-global-gas-market-2026-03-02\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Qatar<\/a> ships roughly 77-80 mn tons per year (mtpa) of LNG, accounting for some 20% of global LNG supply. Global LNG trade runs at roughly 400 mtpa. That means roughly one in every five cargoes originates in Qatar \u2014 not domestic production or pipeline gas, but globally movable cargoes \u2014 in a market where spare liquefaction capacity is thin. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Europe felt it first because it lives on the margin:<\/strong> Since 2022, Europe has leaned heavily on LNG to backfill Russian pipeline flows \u2014 turning the Dutch TTF into the world\u2019s most known gas benchmark. Europe gets 10% of its LNG from Qatar, but this rises to a third for Italy. However, when Qatari supply risk surfaced, TTF surged, touching <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/eu-natural-gas\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EUR 60\/MWh<\/a>, compared to EUR 29\/MWh at the start of the year, but a modest figure compared to EUR 343\/MWh in the 2022 crisis. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>There\u2019s an alternative in the wings \u2014 but it comes with a price: <\/strong>\u201cFor Europe, [the crisis] may be less of a problem as it may step on LNG purchases from the US,\u201d Harry Tchilinguirian, group head of research at Onyx Capital Group, told EnterpriseAM. The US \u2014 world\u2019s largest LNG exporter (sitting ahead of Qatar) \u2014 could <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/fb837a9d-6334-43da-a58d-cb9830dc68fe\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">benefit<\/a>, but the issue is that energy access and trade concessions travel hand-in-hand, with Europe already on record <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-02-04\/merz-seeks-lng-deals-in-gulf-region-to-hedge-us-energy-exposure\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">pledging<\/a> USD 750 bn in US energy purchases through 2028 as a tariff negotiating chip. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Asia matters more \u2014 and that\u2019s where the real competition sits:<\/strong> Countries like China, India, Taiwan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Japan, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/ar\/business\/3BTGRGQ5ZFMQNA4RZ6ZZ34MVGQ-2026-03-02\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">South Korea<\/a> are core buyers of Qatari LNG under long-term contracts (check <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/ar\/business\/3BTGRGQ5ZFMQNA4RZ6ZZ34MVGQ-2026-03-02\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/78fb84bb-0884-412b-b317-1ac3dbcb060a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>). Those contracts anchor baseload supply, but any disruption forces buyers into the spot market to cover gaps. \u201cFor Asia, this may prove more problematic,\u201d Tchilinguirian said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>In our region, Egypt could take a hit.<\/strong> With Israeli flows being suspended, the country could lean into the spot market. It\u2019s not yet clear whether the shutdown will affect the 24 Qatari LNG shipments bound to Egypt. Apart from Qatar, a broader Gulf disruption tightens the entire Atlantic-Pacific LNG balance \u2014 and of course the Red Sea. Cargoes that might have landed in the Mediterranean could get redirected to Asia. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Spot demand is what sets the tension<\/strong>, with Europe and Asia bidding against each other for the same flexible cargoes, sending prices soaring. Import-dependent buyers without long-term cover will feel it first, and as demand rises, sellers will face a simple calculation \u2014 honor a lower-priced long-term contract or pay the penalty and capture a fatter margin in the spot market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What made Qatar\u2019s move so impactful was the timing. <\/strong>The LNG market has limited short-term swing supply. New liquefaction projects in the US and elsewhere are ramping up, but they cannot instantly offset a large Gulf disruption. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Then, obviously, there\u2019s the geography problem:<\/strong> Qatari LNG exports move through Hormuz \u2014 lacking a bypass route \u2014 with heightening risk driving up ins. premiums and freight rates. Unlike oil, which has partial bypass options, there is no large-scale regional gas pipeline system capable of rerouting Qatari volumes. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The impact feeds directly into macro<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The inflation transmission mechanism is direct and fast.<\/strong> Higher gas prices flow immediately into electricity generation costs in Europe and Asia \u2014 and whoever touches the spot market \u2014 then into heavy industry input costs, then into consumer pricing. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Central banks watching core inflation plateau can get cautious about interest rate cuts.<\/strong> Elevated natural gas prices specifically are among the strongest near-term inflation triggers, precisely because it touches so many production chains simultaneously. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The industrial exposure:<\/strong> Energy-intensive sectors \u2014 think metals, cement, fertilizers \u2014 are the first to absorb the cost shock, either by passing it downstream or by throttling output. Shipping giants <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maersk.com\/news\/articles\/2026\/03\/02\/middle-east-operational-update-2#:~:text=Following%20our%20latest%20risk%20assessment,Saudi%20Arabia%20until%20further%20notice\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Maersk<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theloadstar.com\/hapag-lloyd-ceo-several-ships-trapped-in-gulf-as-booking-curbs-loom\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Hapag-Lloyd<\/a>, who have ships trapped in the Gulf, have suspended reefer and special cargo acceptance in and out of the region until further notice. CMA CGM has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/03\/02\/how-will-the-widening-regional-conflict-affect-logistics-in-the-region\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">rerouted all<\/a> West and East-bound voyages via the Cape of Good Hope.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Mediterranean <\/strong><strong>ports could<\/strong><strong> witness an uptick in traffic <\/strong>as shipping firms look to reroute vessels away from the Gulf and shed cargo originally headed for the now-blocked ports. CMA CGM is rerouting all cargo on its PHOEX service to and via Jeddah to Egypt\u2019s Alexandria port, according to a note seen by EnterpriseAM. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The key question is, how long will tankers continue to avoid the strait<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong> \u201cA few days of interruption would not have too great an impact on the global market, with schedules re-arranged and companies drawing from gas storage,\u201d ICIS LNG analyst Alex Froley <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/alex-froley\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The duration of this crisis could make or break us:<\/strong> The longer the disruption lasts, \u201cthe more the impact will grow, affecting not just current supply, but also the ability of Europe and other regions to refill storage for next winter, meaning even a relatively short impact could have effects rippling through into 2027,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">GCC infrastructure hit <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>GCC energy infrastructure struck for a second day: <\/strong>A fuel tank <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.omannews.gov.om\/topics\/ar\/3\/show\/464401\/ona\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">was hit<\/a> at Oman\u2019s Duqm port as it came under attack from several unmanned aircraft. The damage to the tanker was quickly controlled, resulting in minimal disruption. Oman\u2019s Salalah Port was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.az\/news\/watch-moment-iranian-drone-hits-oman-s-port-of-salalah\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">also struck by a drone<\/a>, with a loud explosion heard and plumes of smoke seen rising from the port area. The halt of the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline removes the major viable alternative route Iraq had to reach international markets via the Mediterranean. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>With no clear alternative, Opec\u2019s second-biggest producer is <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-03\/iraq-starts-shutting-oil-output-at-rumaila-as-storage-fills-up\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">shutting down<\/a><\/strong><strong> production<\/strong> at both the Rumaila field and the West Qurna 2 project, effectively cutting off some 1.2 mn bbl \/ d starting yesterday as storage fills up.
