Located in the vicinity of King Khalid International Airport, the zone is planned to cover more than 3 mn sqm when all its phases are developed. Permitted activities cover light assembly, manufacturing, repair, trade, and logistics services \u2014 targeting sectors like aerospace, precious metals, ICT, consumer goods, pharma, and perishables.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a>  <strong>#2- Turkey eases US levies ahead of talks: <\/strong>Turkey has cancelled additional levies and import bans it imposed on certain US products in 2018, ahead of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan's visit to the US tomorrow to conclude a trade agreement, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/turkey-says-it-is-ending-additional-tariffs-some-us-imports-2025-09-22\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing the country\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2025\/9\/1396.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">official gazette (pdf)<\/a>. The unit will be set up at the idle Idku liquefaction facility in partnership with Shell and Petronas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>BACKGROUND- <\/strong>We first heard about the project in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/a5676c6b-01ba-4b22-9bee-6e58fdd68d0a\/egypt-ramps-up-regasification-capacity-with-two-new-units%5C\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">May<\/a> \u2014 at the time it was said that the plant will have an initial capacity of around 750k cubic meters per day, which will increase to 1 mn cubic meters per day at a later stage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why does Egypt need it? <\/strong>The plant will help cut down on the cost of importing energy and will reduce the country\u2019s reliance on leased regasification units. Egypt <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/8088754b-3a38-46d5-abac-c6ec31e393ab\/regional-energy-leaders-look-to-export-lng-shipments-to-egypt\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">will have four regasification vessels<\/a> leased by the end of 2026, with a combined capacity of 3 bn cubic feet per day, to help meet rising energy demand \u2014 the cost of leasing a regasification unit exceeds USD 200 mn a year, making it more feasible to set up a permanent facility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Who owns what:<\/strong> Shell and Petronas together control about 71% of Idku and hold operating rights under a 25-year contract expiring in 2029. The government \u2014 represented by EGPC and EGAS \u2014 holds 24%, while France\u2019s Engie owns the remaining 5%. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The state plans to take over sooner than expected: <\/strong>Shell and Petronas will receive utilization fees for two years after the plant is up and running in exchange for their stakes in the facility, after which full operating rights for both the Idku plant and the new regas unit will revert to the Egyptian state, the source added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A change in Idku\u2019s function: <\/strong>The plant had been used to liquefy gas for exports since it came online back in 2005, but operations halted due to a shortage of feed gas. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Still a liquefaction plant, for now:<\/strong> Shell and Petronas recently <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/066ab2ba-1791-4769-a387-7914dfed2a2d\/gov%25e2%2580%2599t-to-carry-out-egp-5-bn-emergency-rail-maintenance\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">exported<\/a> an LNG cargo from the Idku liquefaction plant and have a second shipment slated for next month, a government source told us.
