logistics area at King Abdulaziz Port (in the news well, below), and some updates on the situation in the Red Sea (we have everything on that in What We\u2019re Tracking Today, below).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ALSO- We have a macro picture to round out the year with UNCTAD\u2019s forecasts for trade growth in 2023<\/strong>, a year marked by volatility and a lot of fluctuations in freight rates and trade volumes. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> CMA CGM will ramp up ship transits through the Red Sea<\/strong>, in a move that follows AP Moller Maersk\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/edition\/logistics\/df037a94-dada-445e-ab0a-e06e71029a85\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">decision<\/a> a few days ago to resume operations there under the US-led naval coalition\u2019s supervision, the company said in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cma-cgm.com\/news\/4548\/cma-cgm-group-updates-on-the-red-sea-situation#:~:text=Consequently%2C%20the%20CMA%20CGM%20Group,the%20southern%20tip%20of%20Africa.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. The company has been monitoring the situation and has opted to reroute some of its vessels away from the Red Sea, it said. \u201cWe are currently devising plans for the gradual increase in the number of vessels transiting through the Suez Canal. We are monitoring the situation constantly and we stand ready to promptly reassess and adjust our plans as needed,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Will German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd follow suit soon? <\/strong>The company will decide tomorrow whether to follow Maersk\u2019s lead and resume Red Sea transit, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/hapag-lloyd-decide-wednesday-about-its-red-sea-routes-2023-12-26\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing a company spokesperson. Hapag-Lloyd is one of many companies that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/63030924-732b-4997-9666-512efc8ffbc5\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">decided in the past week<\/a> to reroute their vessels away from the Red Sea and Suez Canal as Yemen\u2019s armed Houthi group continued to attack vessels crossing the waterway.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It\u2019s not all quiet on that front yet, though:<\/strong>TheUnited Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ukmto.org\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">UKMTO<\/a>) received reports of two explosions 50 nautical miles west of Yemen's port of Hodeidah, it said in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ukmto.org\/indian-ocean\/recent-incidents#\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">notification<\/a>. This can be attributed to a rise in intra-Asian trade, which is carried over shorter haul distances, and has seen a boost in recent years as China continues to lead as a global manufacturing hub. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Regional ports saw better connectivity in 4Q 2023: <\/strong>Saudi Arabia saw its largest-ever leap in UNCTAD\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/unctadstat.unctad.org\/datacentre\/dataviewer\/US.LSCI\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Liner Shipping Connectivity Index (LSCI)<\/a> for the quarter, jumping 10.8% y-o-y to 79.01 points. Egypt\u2019s connectivity improved 9.4% y-o-y to 74.91 and Qatar saw a moderate 3.5% y-o-y uptick to 41.05. The UAE continues to lead the region in terms of connectivity, with its associated LSCI hitting 80.71, 6.25% higher than the same period last year. Outside of the region, China continues to lead the index globally at 180.36, followed by South Korea (118.83) and Singapore (115.89). A surge in demand \u2014 led by post-pandemic industrial growth in China \u2014 saw the index rebound in 2Q 2023.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Ship turnaround times have improved, but digitization and better regulation are key to <\/strong><strong>further gains: <\/strong>Ship turnaround times improved in most regions in the second half of 2022 as pandemic-related disruptions became less impactful. South Korea leads globally in terms of ship turnaround times due to high levels of automation at its ports. Increased digitization and technology, and \u201cwell-oiled\u201d regulatory procedures are vital to realizing gains in port efficiency, the report says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Seaborne trade is taking steps to determine how to decarbonize:<\/strong> International shipping contributes some 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, making efforts to decarbonize the sector a priority for policymakers.
