Egypt and some tidbits from across the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> THE BIG LOGISTICS STORY- <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s Transport Ministry is gearing up to launch a tender for the Alexandria-Cairo railway bypass in 1Q 2024, a ministry source told Enterprise Logistics. So far, some 11 consortia of both Egyptian and global companies have qualified for the tender.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">^^ We have everything on this story and more in the news well, below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> HAPPENING TODAY- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a><strong> The US has joined Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) <\/strong><strong> countries in pushing for a <\/strong><strong> definitive agreement regarding the maritime borders between Kuwait and Iraq <\/strong>in a joint <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/joint-statement-following-the-ministerial-meeting-of-the-united-states-and-the-gulf-cooperation-council-gcc-2\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> following a meeting of the six-nation GCC's foreign ministers, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and GCC Secretary-General Jasem al Budaiwi in New York. This comes a day after the GCC FMs <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/57301f69-fb09-42f7-baf6-739d09dd71e3\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">urged<\/a> Iraq to address the potential negative repercussions of its annulment of a law governing its Khor Abdullah <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/e548806e-e2d8-4c0a-8819-bac5631db598\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">maritime agreement<\/a> with Kuwait. \u201cThey called for the complete demarcation of the Kuwait-Iraq maritime boundary... and called on the government of Iraq to expeditiously resolve the domestic legal status of the 2012 Kuwait-Iraq agreement,\u201d the joint statement said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> REMEMBER- <\/strong>The Iraqi court had ruled that the agreement \u2014 signed by former Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki in 2013 \u2014 was unconstitutional because it should have been ratified by a two-thirds majority of the Iraqi parliament rather than a simple majority.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a> <strong> WATCH THIS SPACE #1- <\/strong><strong> The UAE is set to finalize six more comprehensi <\/strong><strong> ve <\/strong><strong> economic partnership agreements (CEPAs) in the next quarter<\/strong>,the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2023\/09\/19\/uae-to-conclude-6-more-cepa-deals-in-next-3-months-foreign-trade-minister-says\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">National<\/a> cites the UAE\u2019s Foreign Trade Minister Thani Al Zeyoudi as saying in a speech during the Global Trade and Supply Chain Summit in Dubai. The UAE is looking to conclude CEPAs with Pakistan, South Korea and Thailand within the next three weeks, with plans to follow those agreements with ones with Costa Rica, Chile and Vietnam. The UAE has so far concluded CEPA agreements with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/128722e8-18ce-4093-b67e-2ceca20c99ec\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">India,<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/a1c1b721-c66a-4257-a7cf-1ec24858534e\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Indonesia<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moec.gov.ae\/en\/cepa_israel\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/a06cf5f6-2a7b-4f23-900a-10d840bc53bf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Turkey<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/29e1e350-8dd5-4e42-b421-747aeba023ee\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Cambodia<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303140079\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia<\/a>, with the first four agreements already in force. The UAE and Serbia also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/edition\/logistics\/596ecdda-93f5-4b5c-af39-b12dbee0f38a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">kickstarted negotiations<\/a> to establish a CEPA agreement earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a> <strong> WATCH THIS SPACE #2- <\/strong><strong> New Iraqi gas pipeline to Europe? <\/strong> Iraq\u2019s Transport Ministry will build a new gas pipeline towards Europe that will include non-European countries such as Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, as part of its USD 17 bn <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/d3321249-4ced-4ad8-83de-b39732be3c6b\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Development Road project<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ina.iq\/eng\/28724-transportation-ministry-reveals-a-proposal-to-build-a-gas-pipeline-towards-european-market.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Iraqi news agency<\/a> INA reports. Although the project is still in its preliminary design stage, an initial meeting to discuss the mechanism for implementing the project will take place this week, Director of the Iraqi Republic Railways Younis Al Kaabi told INA. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> MARKET WATCH- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <a id=\"wwtt4\"><\/a><strong> Has the peak season come and gone? <\/strong>According to DHL, it has. Peak container shipping this year has been showing mixed signs of irregular movement rates, unclear shipping demands, and lower-than-expected volume levels, DHL said in its latest <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lot.dhl.com\/is-the-2023-peak-shipping-season-over-already\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a>. The peak season arrived early and ended early with spot markets on key East-West trades tapering downwards in early September, instead of building up into the golden holidays in China, DHL explains, citing the Wall Street Journal. Freight rates, as a result, experienced a minor boost from rates in the beginning of September.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> We\u2019re in for potentially another year marked by a capacity glut: <\/strong>\u201cShip deliveries will remain high over the next months,\u201d DHL\u2019s CEO of Global Forwarding in the Asia Pacific Niki Frank,. \u201cBut while the new CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator) and EEXI (Energy Efficiency eXisting ship Index) environmental regulations have created some tonnage demand through mandated slow steaming, cargo volumes will likely not grow enough to absorb all new deliveries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> What about manufacturing and inventory levels? <\/strong>The US has seen a sharp drop in containerized imports from Asia due to reduced demand and inventory drawdowns, and is undergoing the \u201clargest inventory correction cycle in its economic history,\u201d DHL cites supply chain academic expert Jason Miller as saying. Miller expects this correction cycle to continue for another nine to twelve months before it returns to its regular levels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> Shippers need to plan ahead and be strategic: <\/strong>\u201cGiven the stabilizing freight rates and demand and capacity conditions, we foresee that utilization will likely remain balanced for the rest of the year,\u201d Frank said. \u201cBut while we may not be anticipating a peak season surge in the fourth quarter, shippers should still prioritize adaptability and plan ahead in advance to address any possible surge in volumes toward the year-end,\u201d concluded Frank.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> Supply crunch and boosted demand increased global ammonia prices in August: <\/strong>Global blue ammonia production costs saw increases in August, while supply limits edged up prices for conventional ammonia, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/commodityinsights\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/electric-power\/091923-global-ammonia-prices-rise-in-august-as-supply-tightens\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">S&P Global<\/a> reported, citing Platts tracking data. Blue ammonia prices in the Middle East rose more than 20% m-o-m in August, hitting USD 369 per metric ton. <\/strong> As pressure mounts on the shipping sector to slash fuel emissions, Norwegian maritime industry advisor DNV expects the industry to require 30-40% of the estimated annual global supply of carbon neutral fuels by 2030, it said its latest <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/9\/621.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">maritime forecast to 2050 report (pdf)<\/a>. Only 0.1% of fuels used by maritime merchant ships currently are biofuels, while an overwhelming 99.9% are fossil fuels, the report says, adding that it will be a \u201cdaunting, nearly impossible task\u201d to secure the amount of carbon neutral fuels necessary to meet the International Maritime Organization\u2019s (IMO) new ambitious GHG emissions targets. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> Why is it daunting? The maritime sector is not the only sector hunting for carbon neutral <\/strong><strong> fuel: <\/strong> \u201cOther sectors will compete for the same fuel supply,\u201d DNV Maritime CEO Knut \u00d8rbeck-Nilssen commented in the report, referencing sectors like road transport, aviation, and other industries. These fuels include methane, methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen. The current fuel market for shipping is some 280 tonnes of fuel equivalent (Mtoe) annually, and the estimated expected demand for carbon-neutral fuel in shipping alone in 2023 is 17 Mtoe. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> Aside from the lack of supply of carbon-neutral fuels, the report notes other barriers to <\/strong><strong> decarbonizing shipping<\/strong>, including lack of infrastructure, novel safety risks, lack of competence, immature technology and high costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> REMEMBER- <\/strong>TheIMO published new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.org\/en\/OurWork\/Environment\/Pages\/2023-IMO-Strategy-on-Reduction-of-GHG-Emissions-from-Ships.aspx#:~:text=The%202023%20IMO%20GHG%20Strategy%20envisages%2C%20in%20particular%2C%20a%20reduction,at%20least%2040%25%20by%202030.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">regulations<\/a> on reduction of GHG emissions from ships, which sets a target of a 20% reduction in emissions by 2030 and a 70% reduction by 2040. The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/climate.ec.europa.eu\/eu-action\/eu-emissions-trading-system-eu-ets_en\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EU\u2019s Emission Trading System<\/a>(ETS) \u2014 which will be implemented next year \u2014 will also set a price on ship GHG emissions, which <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/fea6d24f-4f02-4e33-b0e5-e21f091f7622\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">could result<\/a> in costs for major shipping firms running into hundreds of mns of USDs come next year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> Fuel technology transition <\/strong><strong> is already gathering pace, albeit rather slowly: <\/strong> An increasing number of vessels in the order books can run on liquified natural gas and petroleum gas, and methanol in dual-fuel engines, with half the ordered tonnage capable of using LNG, LPG, or methanol in dual-fuel engines, compared to just one third of the tonnage on order in 2022, according to the report. Of the ships currently in operation, some 6.5% of tonnage can operate on alternative fuels, compared to 5.5% last year, it added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> Operational efficiencies + other transitional fixes could help the sector achieve its targets: <\/strong>To mitigate increased cost of operations, low cost investments \u2014 including optimized trim and ballasting, hull and propeller cleaning, improved maintenance and optimized weather routing and scheduling \u2014 are all cited by DNV as ways to bolster vessel operational efficiency and can help save emissions. Technical efficiency measures \u2014 including increasing hull and propeller efficiency, reducing hotel load and shore power \u2014 also help reduce the propulsion and auxiliary engine energy demand, though these usually come at heftier price tags, the report notes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> Wind-assisted propulsion (WAP) systems are another solution that has gained traction in <\/strong><strong> the industry: <\/strong>The technology \u2014 which uses wind power to supplement vessel propulsion \u2014 has already helped save up some 5-9% in fuel on an annual basis, and has the potential to save up to 25%, especially if newbuilds are specifically designed to carry sail systems, DNV reports. Only some 28 vessels currently operate with WAP systems, according to the report. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> Another innovative solution is air lubrication systems that can reduce energy <\/strong><strong> consumption <\/strong> by lowering resistance between the hull and seawater through injecting air along the bottom of the ship\u2013to reduce the frictional drag, DNV writes. Net power savings resulting from these systems are in the range of 4-7% at normal operating weather conditions, it adds. The systems are also seeing relatively solid uptake, with more than 347 contracted (or delivered) vessels either equipped or retrofitted with an air lubrication system as of June of this year. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> Onboard carbon capture and storage are also being explored: <\/strong> Onboard carbon capture storage (CCS) captures carbon in the fuel before CO2 is emitted and stores it permanently away from the atmosphere. CCS enables carbon-neutral operation, without relying on blue fuels or sustainable biomass or renewable electricity. The post-combustion method involves capturing CO2 from the exhaust after the fuel has been burned, and is currently one of the most preferred methods companies are trialing, the report said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> As is nuclear propulsion<\/strong>, which is another zero emission, carbon and carbon-neutral alternative for the industry, and can provide the ship\u2019s main energy needs from an onboard nuclear reactor, in which controlled fission of nuclear fuel produces heat that is extracted using a coolant. The heat is used to generate power, and as of today, 160 ships with 200 reactors are in operation, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> There are caveats though<\/strong>: While CCS and nuclear propulsion technologies are viable and cost-effective ways of cutting emissions and alleviating need for fuels, there is a \u201clong road to travel before nuclear can be scaled, and a long logistics chain still needs to be developed for onboard carbon capture \u2014 but we should still evaluate these as alternative pathways,\u201d Orbeck-Nilssen <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradewindsnews.com\/opinion\/viewpoint-there-is-no-more-time-to-waste-in-decarbonisation-s-decisive-decade-says-dnv-maritime\/2-1-1510358\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. Nuclear propulsion still has implementation barriers to overcome, including non-proliferation issues, preventing nuclear accidents, the need for international regulatory development, and public perception of the technology, the report adds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> Establishing green shipping corridors can also speed up uptake of carbon-neutral fuels: <\/strong>The many barriers hindering uptake of carbon neutral fuels such as risk, cost, and supply can be tackled directly when establishing green corridors by identifying the technical, practical, organizational, legal, political and financial barriers, and engaging the relevant stakeholders in a more \u201cpracticable way than on a global scale,\u201d according to the report. A green corridor <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> What exactly is a green shipping corridor? <\/strong>The corridorsallowtechnological, economic and regulatory feasibility of the operation of zero-emission ships, catalyzed by a combination of public and private actions,\u201d according to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalmaritimeforum.org\/content\/2022\/08\/Discussion-paper_Green-Corridors-Definitions-and-Approaches.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Maritime Forum<\/a>.
