Limited availability of arable land and scarce water resources mean that MENA \u2014 which is already among the largest net food importers in the world \u2014 is restricted in terms of food production, with the situation poised to get worse as the region is among the world\u2019s most vulnerable to climate change, the report explained. Although oil-rich countries are in a better position than the rest of the region, fluctuations in energy markets may have pronounced impacts on their demands for food.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">By the numbers: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">2032 is projected to see food import bills that are 30% higher than the 2023 base period, the report added. By 2032 the region\u2019s food imports are projected to be second only to the Developed World and East Asia bloc, and the highest on a per capita basis. The region\u2019s food import bill has been growing steadily following a brief dip due to pandemic-related supply chain problems in 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Grains will be a big chunk: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">By 2032, the region's imports of wheat will account for 26% of the world\u2019s wheat imports, while sugar imports will account for 23% of global imports, and maize will account for 15%, according to the report. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">As will meat + dairy imports:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Proportions for meat and dairy products are also set to increase with MENA\u2019s imports of sheepmeat accounting for 34% and cheese accounting for 21% of global markets by 2032. Besides being a major import globally, MENA\u2019s food imports comprise a weighty share of domestic consumption, once more underlining the fact that changes to global and domestic markets may have far-reaching implications for the region\u2019s food security, the report concludes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The region\u2019s import bill rose 5% in 2022<\/span><span style=\"\">, according to the report.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Imports are expected to rise further in 2023, though at a slower pace, on the back of high food prices and weaker income growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">High import dependency increases the region\u2019s exposure to \u201ctrade related challenges,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"\"> the report said. Disrupted supply chains and a surge in shipping costs due to the Covid-19 pandemic were exacerbated by Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. This was particularly troublesome for the region as it is highly dependent on Russia and Ukraine for wheat supplies. Although the UN-Turkey brokered Black Sea grain initiative \u2014 which is now under threat, after Russia <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/story\/01a22397-9524-4c48-9bd4-4d75db2a79c1\" style=\"\">backed out<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> this week \u2014 saw exports resume, volumes are lower than previously and subject to the continuity of the agreement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Surging global food prices have also put a strain on the region\u2019s food security<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, OECD-FAO\u2019s report added. This was particularly so for non-oil exporting countries which saw a cost-of-living-crisis exacerbated by currency depreciations. A double whammy of global inflation and currency devaluations have made basic foods and healthy diets less affordable to low income households. Food bills account for 33% of household expenditure in the region\u2019s poorest countries, implying that \u201cincome and price shocks can have a significant impact on welfare,\u201d the report said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Counterproductive policies are also at fault:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> The region has attempted to taper its reliance on imports and limit susceptibility to trade and supply chain disruptions through enacting policies to stimulate local cereal production, but these initiatives have backfired, the report explained. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Upped cereal production has come at the cost of reduced output of higher value crops<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> due to competition for limited water resources. The lost output of higher value fresh produce may have otherwise improved dietary diversity and allowed higher income for the same outlay of limited water and land resources. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Productivity gains are the way to go:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Rather than switch out high value crops for cereals, the region should focus on getting the most out of its limited land and water resources, the report explains. This is particularly important when considering that additions to agricultural land over the coming ten years are negligible and estimated at 0.5%. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Productivity gains over the past decade were largely underpinned by increased capital inputs and averaged 0.8% a year,<\/span><span style=\"\"> according to the OECD-FAO report. The type of vessel employed by shipping companies will depend on the size and nature of the cargo, their trade routes, and the ports they\u2019ll have to pass through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">DRY CARGO + CONTAINERS- <\/span><span style=\"\">One of the most common cargo vessels that transport cargo <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">are dry cargo vessels, which carry all types of goods, excluding liquids. These vessels are different in size, but are all able to carry large quantities of cargo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The location is in the name:<\/span><span style=\"\"> Most of these vessels are named after the travel routes that they <\/span><span>usually take, which include the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pancanal.com\/en\/\" style=\"\">Panama Canal<\/a><\/span><span>, Egypt\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.suezcanal.gov.eg\/English\/Pages\/default.aspx\" style=\"\">Suez Canal<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, and South Africa\u2019s Cape of Good Hope or Chile\u2019s Cape Horn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Panamax vessels, for example, are built to pass through the Panama Canal<\/span><span style=\"\">, which means <\/span><span>they must be no more than 32 meters wide and 294 meters long, with a draft of 12 meters, according to the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/6\/785.pdf\" style=\"\">American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) (pdf)<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. These vessels usually have a cargo capacity of some 5k TEUs \u2014 or a twenty-foot equivalent unit, and can come in the form of a tanker, a container vessel and a dry bulk carrier. They have a range of 50k-80k deadweight tons (DWTs), which indicates how much weight capacity a ship can carry, according to the AAPA. These vessels usually transport cargo including iron ore, different forms of coal and grains. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Given the constrained infrastructure of the canal, it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">underwent a USD 5.2 bn <\/span><span style=\"-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;text-decoration-skip-ink:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsp.com\/en-gl\/projects\/panama-canal-expansion\" style=\"\">expansion<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">2016<\/span><span> in order to accommodate increased demand of container ships that were oversized for its infrastructure.
