The Ukrainian government has put together a USD 547 mn fund to provide ins. for ships coming to its ports with Ukrainian officials saying that merchant vessels should have confidence that Ukraine\u2019s defenses \u201ccan do their job\u201d to protect them from Russian attacks, according to official Ukrainian statements cited by <\/span><span>Reuters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"\"> <a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Global air cargo demand continued to fall in April<\/span><span style=\"\">, though at a slower monthly pace, according to data from the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iata.org\/en\/pressroom\/2023-releases\/2023-05-31-01\/\" style=\"\">International Air Transport Association<\/a><\/span><span>. Global demand, measured in cargo ton-kilometers (CTK), fell  6.6% <\/span><span>y-o-y<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> (down 7% for international operations). However, available cargo capacity, measured in available CTK (ACTK), was up 13.4% y-o-y and up 3.2% from April 2019, surpassing pre-covid-19 levels for the first time in three years. The increase in capacity was primarily driven by belly capacity as passenger demand recovers.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">How did MENA\u2019s airlines do? <\/span><span>They reported a decline in cargo volumes of 6.8% <\/span><span>y-o-y<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, while African airlines had a positive performance with increased demand of 20% y-o-y and a capacity increase of 5.3% y-o-y.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">What they said: <\/span><span>\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The air cargo industry is adjusting itself to the implications of the recovery in passenger demand that brings with it an expansion of belly capacity,\u201d IATA Director General Willie Walsh said. \u201cPreighter operations stopped in March and freighter services were scaled back by 2.3% in April,\u201d he added. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"\"><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">WATCH THIS SPACE #1<\/span><span style=\"\">- <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Iraqi Transport Minister Razzag Al Saadawi invited China <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">to participate in its USD 17 bn <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/edition\/logistics\/ff52a464-ac8b-439c-a401-9fafd0f3bc97\" style=\"\">Development Road Project<\/a><\/span><span>, whether through investments or implementation, during a <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/iq.china-embassy.gov.cn\/eng\/sghd\/202306\/t20230602_11088694.htm\" style=\"\">meeting<\/a><\/span><span> between Al Saadawi and Chinese ambassador Cui Wei on Wednesday, according to an Iraqi <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/motrans.gov.iq\/?article=625\" style=\"\">Transport Ministry statemen<\/a><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/motrans.gov.iq\/?article=625\" style=\"\">t<\/a><\/span><span>. While Iraq is open to contributions from all countries, it is \u201clooking forward to an effective contribution by China,\u201d Al Saadawi added. Iraq is planning a second press <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/logistics\/en\/news\/edition\/logistics\/ff52a464-ac8b-439c-a401-9fafd0f3bc97\" style=\"\">conference<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> to further discuss the project, and plans to invite China to it, Al Saadawi said, without disclosing an exact date for the conference. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">China could benefit from being involved in the project: <\/span><span>The project is \u201can important transportation node linking East to West and therefore can be used by China for its trade and because it is a short route between Asian and European markets,\u201d Baghdad-based economist Nabeel Al Marsoumi told <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/mena\/iraq\/2023\/06\/02\/iraq-woos-china-for-transport-project-linking-asia-to-europe\/\" style=\"\">The National<\/a><\/span><span>. While the countries do have friendly ties, there are \u201cdoubts that China would pour money into this project,\u201d he added, attributing this to the security situation and the difficulty of protecting foreign investments in Iraq.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"\"><a id=\"wwtt4\"><\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Oman will award the design contract for Musandam Airport<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> by 3Q 2023:<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caa.gov.om\/\" style=\"\">Oman Civil Aviation Authority<\/a><\/span><span>is expected to award the design and supervision contract for its proposed Musandam Airport by 3Q 2023, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/projects\/construction\/oman-likely-to-award-musandam-airport-design-contract-in-q3-e16nfixo\" style=\"\">Zawya<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> quotes sources it says are in the know as saying. The project is set to be complete by 4Q 2027, with an estimated value of around USD 200 mn, another source reportedly said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The contract details:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> The commercial submission date for the contract is scheduled for 2 July, with the contract expected to be awarded by September 2023.  The contract scope includes preliminary design, detailed design, tender documents and tendering, supervision and post contract services.
