<\/strong>China\u2019s exp<\/strong>ort restrictions on rare earth metals could trigger disruptions for <\/strong>m<\/strong>anufacturers of electric vehicles within a few months<\/strong>, the Financial Times<\/a> reports. The full impact of these latest controls is still unclear, but carmakers are already raising concerns based on current stockpiles.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s happening? <\/strong>The new controls now encompass seven heavy and medium rare earths, such as dysprosium, terbium, and samarium, vital for manufacturing electric vehicles and wind turbines. These controls expand on measures that have been implemented by China since 2023 in response to US restrictions on chip technology<\/a>, requiring exporters to obtain licenses for each overseas shipment and banning re-exports to the US. <\/p>\n

The new controls came after US President Trump <\/strong>launched a probe<\/a><\/strong> into mineral and <\/strong>product imports <\/strong>last week<\/strong>, to assess the need for higher tariffs. Findings are due within 180 days, which could override the tariffs imposed last month.<\/p>\n

Beijing\u2019s strategy: <\/strong>The expanded measures are understood to be a response to the 145% tariff hike<\/a> levied by the Trump administration on Chinese goods, in a bid to pressure US companies to lobby Washington into changing tariff policies, an unnamed senior automotive executive told the financial publication.<\/p>\n

The implications could be severe: <\/strong>EV automakers were caught off guard, with suppliers holding only 2-3 months\u2019 worth of magnets, causing \u201cgenuine problems\u201d in the automotive supply chain, said Jan Giese, Frankfurt-based Tradiu\u2019s Senior Manager for Minor Metals and Rare Earth Elements. An unnamed Japanese government official echoed the same concern, telling the salmon-colored paper that there\u2019s not enough time to establish alternative supply chains before current stockpiles are exhausted.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really kind of tough all the way around,\u201d <\/strong>S&P Global auto analyst Stephanie Brinley told Politico's E&E News<\/a>. The projected 700k drop in US car sales this year makes it comparable to the tough markets of the 2009 recession and the 2020 pandemic, Brinely said.<\/p>\n

IN CONTEXT- <\/strong>China holds a near monopoly on heavy rare earths processing, and the imposed export controls cover medium and heavy rare earths \u2014 materials that are difficult and costly to extract, both financially and environmentally \u2014 Giese told the Financial Times.<\/p>\n

Breaking the monopoly: <\/strong>Japan and other nations are pinning hopes on Australia\u2019s Lynas<\/a>, as the rare earth mining company is set to expand its Malaysian processing site to produce dysprosium and terbium by mid-2025.<\/p>\n

Almuneef<\/a><\/strong>Company for Trade, Industry, Agriculture, and Contracting<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s BoD<\/strong> re<\/strong>commended a SAR 9.5 mn dividend distribution for FY 2024<\/strong> at SAR 0.25 per share, it said in a disclosure to Tadawul<\/a>. The dividends are pending general assembly approval, where a distribution date will be set.<\/p>\n

Basic C<\/a><\/strong>hemical<\/a><\/strong>Industries<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s (BCI) BoD<\/strong> proposed a SAR 27.5 mn dividend distribution for <\/strong>FY 2024<\/strong> at SAR 1.0 per share, it said in a disclosure to Tadawul<\/a>. BCI\u2019s general assembly still needs to sign off on the move and determine the distribution date.<\/p>\n

Saudi Ch<\/strong>emical Company Holdin<\/strong>g\u2019s top brass recommended a SAR 42.2 mn dividend <\/strong>distribution for FY 2024 <\/strong>at SAR 0.05 per share, it said in a disclosure to Tadawul<\/a>. The move is yet to get the general assembly\u2019s approval, which will also set the payment date.<\/p>\n

Qomel Com<\/strong>pany\u2019s shareholders approved a 100% capital increase to SAR 70 mn<\/strong>, it said in a disclosure<\/a> to Tadawul.
