It was a mixed weekend, with no single story driving the conversation on Saudi <\/strong>in the international press. <\/p>\n

On an agreement with the US: <\/strong>Israeli media sounds more optimistic than do Foreign Policy<\/a> and CNN<\/a>, with the Times of Israel<\/a> saying that Riyadh and Washington a \u201cvery close\u201d to an agreement that hinges on how normalization plays out, citing remarks by State Department spokesman Matthew Miller on Thursday.<\/p>\n

NYT columnist Thomas Friedman <\/strong>claims to have in inside scoop<\/a><\/strong>: <\/strong>\u201cGet out of Gaza, freeze the building of settlements in the West Bank and embark on a three- to five-year \u2018pathway\u2019 to establish a Palestinian state,\u201d he says of Saudi\u2019s conditions. \u201cThe good news is that they are 90 percent done with the mutual defense treaty that they have drawn up, both sides tell me,\u201d he writes. <\/p>\n

What\u2019s next? \u201cThe US and the Saudis are considering finalizing the deal and taking it to <\/strong>Congress<\/strong> with the stated proviso that Saudi Arabia will normalize relations with Israel the minute Israel has a government ready to meet the Saudi-US terms,\u201d Friedman writes.<\/p>\n
