Possibilities include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A move into gold as <strong>a hedge against volatility<\/strong> (tense elections around the world this year, Chinese rhetoric on Taiwan, uncertainty about the regional banking industry in the US);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Momentum traders <\/strong>piling into the asset class as it continued to climb;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Retail \u201cstealth buyers,\u201d <\/strong>whose transactions are more difficult to track (think: heavy retail demand in countries like China and Egypt).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>So is gold going to tumble? It\u2019s a split decision.<\/strong> Some pundits worry that if they don\u2019t understand what\u2019s driving the market, it\u2019s a sign we\u2019re due for a correction. A Standard Chartered analyst, on the other hand, says, \u201cIt does look like we have new [durable] appetite in the gold market. There are too many unknown events that investors want to hedge for,\u201d she said, citing elections, risks of conflict escalation or the return of a banking crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">INTEREST RATE WATCH-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Rate watchers on both sides of the Atlantic were reading the sheep\u2019s entrails yesterday<\/strong>, parsing Eurozone inflation data and Fedspeak for signs of when we might see rate cuts in advanced economies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>In Europe: <\/strong>Inflation is expected to fall 0.2 percentage points to 2.4% in March on average across the Eurozone, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/en\/web\/products-euro-indicators\/w\/2-03042024-ap\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">preliminary estimates<\/a> released yesterday by the EU statistics agency Eurostat. Falling inflation will bolster expectations that the European Central Bank will cut interest rates <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/427578a6-27dd-4cca-90e8-e290e21439f4\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">as early as June<\/a>, but not at next week\u2019s meeting. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>In Amreeka: <\/strong>Jay Powell <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/04\/03\/feds-powell-emphasizes-need-for-more-evidence-that-inflation-is-easing-before-cutting-rates.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a> \u201cit is too soon to say whether the recent [inflation] readings represent more than just a bump.
