PSAs<\/p>\n

The Sa<\/strong>udi Ports Authority (<\/strong>Mawani<\/strong>) is allowing importers and exporters to <\/strong>release goods from port terminals before settling storage fees<\/strong>, provided a valid electronic release permit is issued, it said on X<\/a>. However, the storage fees must be settled within 15 days of the invoice date.<\/p>\n

<\/a> SPORTS \u2014<\/strong> The PIF lens shifts to Newcastle: <\/strong>Public Investment Fund head Yasir Al Rumayyan is in the UK to lead a 25-member delegation for Newcastle United\u2019s \u2014 which is majority-owned by the fund \u2014 two-day annual board-level \u201coff-siting\u201d meetings, where the club\u2019s long-term strategy and short-term performance will be reviewed, the New York Times<\/a> reports. <\/p>\n

On the agenda:<\/strong> The meetings will decide whether to expand the club\u2019s existing St James\u2019 Park stadium or build a new one, alongside plans for a new training facility.<\/p>\n

But the PIF hasn\u2019t been too fond of sports lately:<\/strong> The meetings come amid speculation<\/a> about a reassessment of Saudi sports investment priorities, including potential changes to funding for major international projects, as well as reports that the PIF is pulling the plug<\/a> on LIV Golf and that Saudi Arabia is stepping back from events such as the Next Gen ATP and WTA Finals. <\/p>\n

\n

<\/a> TEC<\/strong>H \u2014 <\/strong>Cloudsdcs<\/a><\/strong>,<\/strong> a UK-based cloud and cybersecurity firm, <\/strong>has <\/strong>expanded<\/a><\/strong> into Saudi Arabia<\/strong> with AstroLabs\u2019 support to serve enterprise and government clients. As an AWS Advanced Consulting Partner, it will provide cloud migration, AI and machine learning services, managed services, and sovereign cloud deployments, mainly targeting regulated sectors such as finance, healthcare, and the public sector.<\/p>\n

AWS builds it, consultants queue for it: <\/strong>Cloudsdcs\u2019 entry into the market comes ahead of the launch of the USD 5 bn AWS-Humain AI Zone<\/a>. It\u2019s part of a new wave of specialized consultancies entering the Kingdom to support compliance and cloud integration ahead of the new AWS region.<\/p>\n

\n

<\/a> DISRUPTION WATCH <\/strong>\u2014TotalEnergies <\/strong>partially<\/a><\/strong>resumed<\/a><\/strong> operations at <\/strong>the Satorp refinery in Jubail<\/strong> after it was shut down following a series of attacks<\/a> on the Kingdom\u2019s energy infrastructure earlier in the month, which damaged parts of the facility. The attacks affected three units and prompted a precautionary shutdown. Undamaged units were gradually restarted, and by mid-April, the refinery was operating at half of its 460k bbl \/ d capacity.<\/p>\n

Oil watch<\/p>\n

It\u2019s business as usual at Opec: <\/strong>Opec+ is expected to raise oil output quotas by roughly 188k bbl \/ d when members meet on Sunday, three unnamed sources told Reuters<\/a>. The move reflects a \u2018business as usual\u2019 approach to the oil group\u2019s strategy in light of the UAE\u2019s exit<\/a> this week, one of the sources told the newswire.<\/p>\n

The context:<\/strong> The expected hike comes at a time when the oil cartel\u2019s production is hampered by the blockaded Strait of Hormuz, which resulted in its crude output declining<\/a> by a record 7.6 mn bbl \/ d in March. Opec+ had decided to boost oil output<\/a> by 206k bbl \/ d for May earlier this month \u2014 a symbolic decision given the logistical hurdles \u2014 including the now-departed UAE\u2019s share. <\/p>\n

What does the UAE\u2019s exit from Opec mean for energy prices? Predictions roll in. <\/strong>US President Donald Trump believes the move will lower energy prices, Bloomberg<\/a> reports. \u201cIt\u2019s a good thing for getting the price of gas down, getting oil down, getting everything down,\u201d Trump said. <\/p>\n

Moscow agrees: <\/strong>Russia\u2019s Finance Minister made a similar argument, saying<\/a> that the exit will prompt the oil cartel to boost production, which will bring down energy prices in the future.<\/p>\n

Others are less optimistic: <\/strong>Goldman Sachs predicts<\/a> the exit will trigger greater upside risk to oil supply in the medium term, given that UAE crude production is set to reach 3.8 mn bbl \/ d by October 2026. <\/p>\n

Brent hit a<\/strong> multi-year high overnight: <\/strong>The global benchmark surpassed the USD 120 per barrel mark in the early hours of the morning, briefly hovering at around USD 122 \u2014 its highest level since 2022 \u2014 before easing. This followed reports of a prolonged US naval blockade on Iran.<\/p>\n

The big story abroad <\/p>\n

Jay Powell\u2019s final Fed meeting as chair was an unremarkable one<\/strong>, with the US central bank holding rates<\/a> in line with market expectations. A divided Federal Reserve kept the policy rate in the 3.50%-3.75% range \u2014 four policymakers voiced their dissent, a level of division unseen since 1992. The bank cited persisting inflation and rising energy prices for the move, pointing to a \u201chigh level of uncertainty\u201d stemming from the US-Iran war.<\/p>\n

Powell may be stepping down as chair, but he\u2019s not leaving the Fed just yet. <\/strong>After his term as chair comes to an end on 15 May, he will \u201ckeep a low profile as a governor\u201d for an indefinite period, preventing President Donald Trump from clinching a majority on the Fed\u2019s Board of Governors. Powell has expressed concern for the institution\u2019s independence and transparency as he came under attack from Trump in recent months.<\/p>\n

Who\u2019s next?<\/strong> Trump-nominated Kevin Warsh will likely take on<\/a> the mantle of chair in time for the Fed\u2019s meeting in mid-June. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the tech world: <\/strong>AI startup Anthropic is reportedly exploring<\/a> a new funding round that would propel its valuation beyond the USD 900 bn mark. If successful, the move would push the company\u2019s valuation past that of rival OpenAI.<\/p>\n
