Tehran <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/araghchi\/status\/2041655156215799821?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responded by saying<\/a> it would halt its attacks across the Gulf if the US and Israel stop their attacks. The Islamic Republic also said it would open the Strait of Hormuz, allowing vessels to transit the waterway in coordination with Iranian armed forces. This came hours before Trump\u2019s deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or else a \u201cwhole civilization will die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>What happens next?<\/strong> The two sides will meet on Friday to \u201cfurther negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes,\u201d Pakistan\u2019s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CMShehbaz\/status\/2041665043423752651?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. Trump said Iran presented a 10-point proposal, which he called a \u201cworkable basis on which to negotiate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>The question is whether the ceasefire will hold: <\/strong>Despite the ceasefire announcement, Saudi authorities issued a security alert to residents and activated air defenses, along with the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/iran-war-live-tehran-rejects-ceasefire-deal-trumps-deadline-reopen-strait-hormuz-2026-04-07\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports. The UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait reported a fresh round of missile attacks. A US official told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2026\/04\/07\/world\/iran-war-trump-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a> that Washington has halted strikes against Iran in accordance with the agreement shortly after the announcement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Market reax: <\/strong>Oil dipped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-07\/latest-oil-market-news-and-analysis-for-april-8?srnd=homepage-middle-east\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">below USD 100 per barrel<\/a> following the news, with Brent dropping as much as 16% to below USD 92 earlier today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Asian markets cheered the ceasefire<\/strong>, with Japan\u2019s Nikkei climbing over 5% and South Korea\u2019s Kospi rising almost 6% in early trading. Western futures markets \u2014 in the US and Europe \u2014 also posted gains across the board.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>What this means for us at home: <\/strong>The reopening of Hormuz means oil exports can once again start making their usual trips to their destinations, helping end one of the worst disruptions the global energy market has ever seen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.1500000000000001;text-align: left\"><strong>Before the ceasefire: <\/strong>Explosions were reported in the Jubail industrial city early yesterday morning, which authorities said were due to debris from intercepting seven ballistic missiles over the Eastern Province. Jubail is one of the largest petrochemical production hubs in the world, with an annual output of about 60 mn tons \u2014 amounting to 6-8% of global supply.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Precautions are being taken: <\/strong>Traffic on the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain was <a href=\"https:\/\/gulfnews.com\/world\/gulf\/saudi\/king-fahd-causeway-closed-amid-heightened-security-alerts-1.500499405#:~:text=New%20ferry%20service%20launched%20between,1m%20read\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temporarily<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/gulfnews.com\/world\/gulf\/saudi\/king-fahd-causeway-closed-amid-heightened-security-alerts-1.500499405#:~:text=New%20ferry%20service%20launched%20between,1m%20read\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended<\/a> yesterday morning but was later resumed. Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE saw the steepest declines, with Iraq losing 2.8 mn bbl \/ d, Saudi Arabia 2.1 mn bbl \/ d, and the UAE 1.4 mn bbl \/ d. Supply disruptions also hit Russia due to Ukrainian attacks on Baltic terminals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>ICYMI- <\/strong>Opec+ <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/ksa\/2026\/04\/06\/opec-boosts-output-for-may\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> a 206k bbl \/ d production hike for May, but the increase is largely symbolic, as key nations remain unable to boost output amid the US-Iran conflict. That strategy is now facing its most severe stress test yet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>T<\/strong><strong>he ongoing geopolitical volatility in the region has created a \u201cselective blockade<\/strong>.\u201d The Kingdom is confronting the physical limitations of its massive food logistics network as Iran blockades the Strait of Hormuz and Houthi militants threaten shipping through the Bab Al Mandab Strait.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>Saudi still relies heavily on imports to meet its food security needs<\/strong>, with imports <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/saudipedia.com\/en\/wheat-in-the-kingdom\" style=\"\">covering up to<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/saudipedia.com\/en\/wheat-in-the-kingdom\" style=\"\">70-80%<\/a> of our total food demand. However, the Kingdom does maintain incredibly robust staple stock levels. The General Food Security Authority (GFSA) aggressively expanded its storage capacity to a massive 3.5 mn tons, sufficient for at least four to six months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>BUT- <\/strong>If maritime choke points are effectively closed, deep reserves only buy time. \u201cWhether you own a farm somewhere or whether you buy the food on the open market, when the Strait of Hormuz or the Bab Al Mandab are closed, you have a problem,\u201d Eckart Woertz, director of the GIGA Institute for Middle East Studies, tells EnterpriseAM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Why it matters<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>The Kingdom actively shifted from passive investments to controlling stakes in global food <\/strong><strong>companies in recent years<\/strong>, leveraging state-owned entities like Salic to acquire agricultural assets worldwide. Most recently, Salic acquired 80% of Singapore\u2019s Olam Agri for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/ksa\/en\/news\/story\/bf59e3a7-7f3f-4520-8992-4d95170a6a39\/salic-now-owns-80%2525-of-singapore%25e2%2580%2599s%253cmark%253e-olam%253c%2Fmark%253e-agri-%2B-alat-acquires-15%2525-of-tk-elevator\" style=\"\">USD 1.8 bn<\/a>, gaining access to food, feed and fiber, agri-industrials, and ag-services in over 30 countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>The catch? Owning the commodity at its origin does not assure its safe passage. <\/strong>We do have alternative import outlets via Red Sea ports like Jeddah and Yanbu. However, the western ports have limited capacity to handle the large volumes needed to offset a complete disruption in the east. There are also underlying fears of Iranian attacks targeting Western port infrastructure, mirroring past strikes on energy facilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>If the Houthis escalate their involvement and fully choke off Bab Al Mandab<\/strong>, Saudi Arabia\u2019s maritime routes would be compromised on two sides, MENA Economist Hamzeh Al Gaood tells us. While Al Gaaod believes such an action would be met swiftly by coalition retaliation, the vulnerability itself is forcing a fundamental rethink in Riyadh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>While Riyadh is scrambling to fortify its supply lines, it still holds a massive structural <\/strong><strong>advantage over its neighbors.<\/strong> Al Gaaod points out that the Kingdom\u2019s sheer size and western coastline make it far less vulnerable than other GCC states. Countries entirely dependent on Hormuz or lacking deep Red Sea access are facing a much more precarious reality. Saudi Arabia is already leveraging its domestic production to export staples like dairy and eggs to neighbors like the UAE and Oman \u2014 but if Hormuz closes entirely, the entire region's supply chain could fracture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">A pivot to rail and dirt<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>If the seas are compromised, the Kingdom must look to the land. <\/strong>The most critical bottleneck in Saudi Arabia\u2019s current overland logistics network is its reliance on trucks and a lack of robust rail systems connecting it to neighboring countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>We are already seeing operators move to fix this.<\/strong> Saudi Arabia Railways recently announced that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spa.gov.sa\/N2546550\" style=\"\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spa.gov.sa\/N2546550\" style=\"\">a corridor<\/a> is being established between GCC ports and the northern border, allowing cargo to move through Jordan in both directions. Al Gaaod highlights the urgent need for \u201ccritical infrastructure connecting to the Levant and Iraq with its New Development Road initiative to diversify trade channels for physical goods.\u201d Integrating closer with allies like Iraq and Syria can open access to regions with deep agricultural capabilities, such as the Euphrates and Tigris basins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>The viability of these overland routes is debated, however. <\/strong>Woertz remains skeptical of leaning on Jordan to bypass maritime chaos. \u201cI wouldn't see Jordan as an alternative trade route. It's more or less landlocked,\" he argues. If ships cannot reach Aqaba safely, a railway through Jordan offers little relief. Meanwhile, the ambitious Iraq Development Road project remains hindered by the Khor Abdullah agreement dispute between Kuwait and Iraq.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Agritech versus aquifers<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>The supply chain shock of the Covid-19 pandemic previously pushed Saudi Arabia to address its <\/strong><strong>overreliance on food imports. <\/strong>The Kingdom heavily subsidized local production, achieving self-sufficiency in some sectors. Saudi Arabia now exports dates, eggs, and dairy products to neighbors like the UAE, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, and Oman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>Al Gaaod points to an acceleration in local agriculture driven by innovation. <\/strong>The Kingdom is utilizing \u201cspecial date-based fertilizers to grow crops in the desert,\u201d expanding local peat moss fertilizer usage to reclaim arid land, and relying heavily on capital-intensive desalination. Saudi Arabia was recently <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2638077\/saudi-arabia\" style=\"\">hailed by the UN<\/a> for restoring over 1 mn hectares of land.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>Can agritech overcome the Kingdom's geographic reality?<\/strong> Woertz argues that the lack of resources \u2014 especially water \u2014 make this a long shot, pointing to purposefully phasing out large-scale wheat production in 2008 for this exact reason. Recent government initiatives have reintroduced limited domestic wheat farming quotas, but it remains a fraction of what is required to feed the population.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>Some have suggested Riyadh could leverage its status as a major nitrogen and <\/strong><strong>phosphate fertilizer exporter to secure food supplies from regional partners. <\/strong>Woertz, however, dismisses this diplomatic lever in the context of the current crisis, noting that Iran is also a fertilizer producer. Blocking the strait provides an incentive to disrupt global shipments of all commodities, ensuring gas and fertilizer shipments suffer alongside oil, Woertz argued.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">What comes next?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.149999976158142;text-align:left\"><strong>The emergency measures of today are likely to become standard operating procedures. <\/strong>The current crisis is a stark \u201cwarning of the ease with which a hostile nation can cause so much chaos,\u201d Woertz says.
