No stranger to feminist retellings of Greek mythology, British author Jennifer Saint has penned quite a few. Her latest installment, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/195790663-hera\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Hera<\/a>, the queen of all queens herself, joins the pantheon alongside Saint\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/54860614-ariadne\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Ariadne<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/58725016-elektra\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Elektra<\/a>, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/61884838-atalanta\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Atalanta<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Saint\u2019s retellings are hit or miss<\/strong>. Her first, Ariadne, left audiences divided. While it received many raving reviews, we personally found it a not-so-successful attempt to mimic the success of Madeline Miller\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/35959740-circe\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Circe<\/a> or Nathalie Haynes\u2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/53487148-a-thousand-ships?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=uYoaHkSuDg&rank=1\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">A Thousand Ships<\/a>. Her second novel, Elektra, was more of the same, but her third novel Atalanta, following mythology\u2019s only heroine, left us in awe, and prompted a reread. Naturally, when approaching Hera, we were skeptical. This would either outdo its predecessors, or fall right into the same traps. Our verdict? It\u2019s complicated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>Queen<\/strong><strong> of the immortals is she.\u201d<\/strong> In Greek mythology, Hera is painted as the jealous, murderous wife of Zeus, condemning his mistresses and bastards to tortuous ends, and while the retelling doesn\u2019t seek to change that, it provides some much needed context. The novel\u2019s prologue begins with the infamous battle between the Olympians and the Titans, and showcases Hera\u2019s battle prowess as she cuts through scores of titans. However, it quickly becomes clear that Hera is yet to become the unforgiving goddess the years would shape her to be. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Following the Olympians\u2019 victory, Zeus forces Hera into marrying him to secure his <\/strong><strong>claim to the Olympian throne and discredit Hera\u2019s own as the eldest Olympian<\/strong>. From there, Hera begins a life of misery, domestic abuse, and becomes a victim of serial infidelity and assault at the hands of her brother-king. The novel notes Hera\u2019s transformation, and details the events that turned her into a villain, forged by millennia of painful experiences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>However, the novel isn\u2019t without its flaws<\/strong>. Hera is written in third person, so it\u2019s not as personal as Saint\u2019s first three novels. However, given Hera\u2019s own regal and grand aura, the author\u2019s choice to keep readers at an arm\u2019s length is understandable. While the comprehensive account of the Greek myths adds to the novel, it falls into the trap of having too many plotlines, with lots of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ac97286d-5837-4160-9611-9443f695d3fd\/what-you-don%25e2%2580%2599t-know-about-medusa\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">famed mythological figures<\/a> coming into play. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>That said, it\u2019s one of our favorite Jennifer Saint Greek novels<\/strong>. While it boasts the lowest Goodreads score of any of her works at 3.56 stars, we\u2019d argue that it fares better than most of them. It\u2019s an engaging read, an interesting characterization, and a novel that invites a great deal of introspection. While most retellings center on showcasing on redeeming certain figures, this one doesn\u2019t \u2014 it embraces Hera\u2019s cracks, which come from a place of suffering. Bonus tip: dip your fries in the sauce. The pastrami mushroom omelet was a solid option as well, but unfortunately didn\u2019t earn the same praise as its Turkish counterpart. The berry mocktail is also worth trying out \u2014 refreshing and sweet but not saccharine.
