Vuong knows how to draw you in, keep you guessing, and strike when you least expect it. His debut novel <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5b04d199-db74-4adf-8968-e5ad34abfddc\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5b04d199-db74-4adf-8968-e5ad34abfddc\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">On Earth We\u2019re Briefly Gorgeous<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5b04d199-db74-4adf-8968-e5ad34abfddc\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> proved as much, and his second novel, <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/219848315-the-emperor-of-gladness\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The Emperor of Gladness<\/a><\/strong>, proves his first wasn\u2019t just a lucky shot. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The emperor.<\/strong> In <strong>The Emperor of Gladness<\/strong>, we follow Hai, a 19-year old Vietnamese-American boy. Hai seems to have lost all hope in life, and we first meet him as he contemplates ending it all. When fate \u2014 manifested in the form of an 80-year-old Lithuanian woman called Grazina\u2014 stops him from making the jump, Hai wonders if perhaps there\u2019s a way to turn his life around. After moving in with Grazina, Hai begins reflecting on his life, his dreams, what once was, and what may still be. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Fast food, slow <\/strong><strong>read<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> As the 19-year old finds a job in a restaurant in his wreck of a small town \u2014 East Gladness \u2014 our cast of characters begins to make themselves known. This isn\u2019t your average novel, however. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>If you\u2019re familiar with Ocean Vuong, you\u2019ll know what\u2019s coming<\/strong>. If you\u2019re not, brace yourself. The Emperor of Gladness is quite different from Vuong\u2019s debut \u2014 which was written in the form of a series of letters from son to illiterate mother. Yet, certain themes and glaring similarities persist. While the novel itself is not based on a true story, it draws heavily from Vuong\u2019s own life. If you\u2019ve read Vuong\u2019s previous works, you\u2019ll likely be able to tell where the novel is headed \u2014 or at least, who Hai is as a character might not come as a surprise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Yet, The Emperor of Gladness still proves unputdownable.<\/strong> The novel is character-driven, and is poetic in nature. As much can be discerned from the very first chapter \u2014 one dedicated entirely to describing the all-but-abandoned town in which the story unfolds. Yet here\u2019s the thing about Vuong, no matter how many descriptors he may use, none of them are filler. You might begin a paragraph and wonder where it\u2019s taking you, only to have your jaw drop by the end of it. The novel discusses substance abuse, depression, the struggles of immigrants, and what family truly means.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This is a slow read, and one you\u2019ll have to savor.<\/strong> If you\u2019re looking for a fast-paced plot-driven read, Vuong\u2019s second novel might not be for you. Cairo-based Turkish restaurant <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nisantasi-int.com\/ar\/egypt\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Ni\u015fanta\u015fi<\/a> has artfully mastered that balance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It\u2019s like stepping into your grandmother\u2019s vintage salon.<\/strong> Ni\u015fanta\u015fi draws lots of inspiration from its namesake Turkish district; it\u2019s classical, maximalist, and \u2014 perhaps most importantly \u2014 feels like home. The restaurant has two branches, one in Nasr City\u2019s City Stars, and the other at Cairo Festival City Mall, with views of CFC\u2019s Village fountain. We opted to visit the latter\u2026a couple of times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Be it breakfast, lunch, or dinner, this Turkish destination is ready to serve. <\/strong>Ni\u015fanta\u015fi\u2019s menu is expansive without feeling overwhelming, if you\u2019re going for breakfast, the restaurant serves a mean shakshouka, spectacular simit, sojouk omelettes, and even croissants if you\u2019re not feeling adventurous. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>For our first visit, we ordered a little bit of everything off the breakfast menu<\/strong>, and discovered lots of hits, and barely any misses. The star of the show was the simit with scrambled eggs and spinach, which all but literally melted into our mouths. A subjective miss? The scrambled eggs were a little too basic, especially when compared to the rest of the breakfast offerings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Now, for the encore. <\/strong>We returned a mere few hours later as curiosity began bubbling inside \u2014 if breakfast was this good, what would lunch look like? For round two, we got the the meze plate \u2014 complete with five different cold appetizers and dips \u2014 the Yaprak Sarma (stuffed vine leaves), Za\u2019atar Pide (essentially a manouche), the Sa\u00e7 Kavurma (a tender beef stew), and a kebab sandwich. To put it simply, the plates were wiped clean. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Our humble verdict: <\/strong>The citrusy stuffed vine leaves disappeared almost immediately, followed by the Za\u2019tar pide, which was hot and fresh to the point of tears (happy ones, that is.) Though our appetites had begun to wane, they were quickly reignited at the sight of the Sa\u00e7 Kavurma. The spice-riddled beef dish undoubtedly reigned supreme given its tenderness, and is one we\u2019ll definitely be going back for.
