Hanya Yanigahara is no stranger to heart-wrenching fiction. <\/strong>Though her acclaimed novel <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b9b3e3e0-d759-49ca-adad-dba2aa65d8d9\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">A Little Life<\/a> certainly steals the spotlight in this category, we would argue that its lesser-known predecessor, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/16126596-the-people-in-the-trees\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The People in the Trees<\/a>, does not play around when it comes to delivering an emotional uppercut.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The jury isn\u2019t out for long. <\/strong>The 362-page novel begins with a letter written by a Dr. Ronald Kubodera, which provides testimony to the character of Norton Perina, an American doctor on trial. Perina is the novel\u2019s focal character, whom the reader quickly discovers is \u2014 to put it plainly \u2014 not a good person. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Perina tells all. <\/strong>From that point onwards, the novel is presented through the memoirs of Perina himself. It\u2019s a slow burn, and it\u2019s an uncomfortable one. Perina\u2019s inner monologue hints at a twisted nature \u2014 one that lacks a moral compass and does an incredible job of pretending otherwise. This sheer unflinching honesty is precisely why this book is unputdownable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>So what has this mystery doctor been up to? <\/strong>The People in the Trees, more or less operates on a linear timeline, with a few time jumps here and there. The real action starts when Perina joins an anthropological expedition to a Micronesian island on a goosechase for a \u201clost tribe\u201d who are said to have discovered biological immortality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Shockingly, it wasn\u2019t a sham. <\/strong>Perina eventually does find the immortal tribe who have defied science, and discovers their \u201celixir,\u201d only for everything to \u2014 expectedly \u2014 come crashing down at his hands. Author Hanya Yanigahara masterfully writes a character that is drunk on power, leaving no door unopened to the path of fame and prestige, and she does so in a manner that forces her readers to question their own morals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The People in the Trees isn\u2019t for the faint of heart. <\/strong>Gore, sexual abuse, and the horrors of the human mind are laid out plainly and unceremoniously with no fair warnings or preambles \u2014 there is no savior in this story, and that is exactly the point.
