Until then: Enjoy the weekend. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ECONOMY- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>#1- The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) hiked interest rates by 200 basis points last night<\/strong> as it looks to preempt an anticipated rise in inflation, the bank said <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbe.org.eg\/en\/news-publications\/news\/2024\/02\/01\/17\/37\/press-release-%E2%80%93-february-1st,-2024\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">in a statement<\/a> following its policy meeting. The first hike since August came as \u201cwidespread inflationary pressures remain elevated, continuing to impact pricing and consumption behaviours. Moreover, geopolitical uncertainty and ongoing maritime trade disruptions continue to raise domestic and global inflationary pressures,\u201d the bank said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Where rates now stand: <\/strong>The deposit rate is now at 21.25%, the lending rate at 22.25% and the main operation and disc. rates at 21.75%. The central bank has now hiked rates by 1.3k bps since March 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Only a few saw this coming: <\/strong>While a number of analysts in our customary <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/77990506-c8e6-4ba3-a7a4-205e229c7be6\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">interest rate poll<\/a> expected the CBE to keep rates on hold, to be paired \u2014 sooner or later \u2014 with devaluation when we finalize a new agreement with the IMF, a smaller number anticipated yesterday\u2019s hike. \"The latest IMF's comments on the loan program review and ongoing discussions signal a shift in priorities toward inflation targeting, suggesting a probable monetary tightening in the coming months. That said, we expect a 150-200 bps hike,\" <strong>Ahmed Hafez<\/strong>, Head of Research at Beltone Holding, told Enterprise before the meeting. Economist <strong>Mona Bedeir<\/strong> also saw the bank moving forward with a 200 bps rate hike \u201cbecause monetary tightening has become an urgent necessity at the current stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#2- A new IMF package and up-coming devaluation could be in the cards: <\/strong>Egyptian officials <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/08f51e36-cd3a-411d-a974-659fd3601066\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">appear to be nearing<\/a> a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund for a new \u2014 and bigger\u2014 support package.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But there\u2019s no consensus on how big the loan will be<\/strong>, with local and international outlets have put the figure between USD 6-10 bn, while four sources with knowledge of the matter told Enterprise on Tuesday that the agreement nearing completion is worth c. USD 9 bn. <\/p>\n<p><strong>In all cases, the value of the program will include the USD 3 bn the IMF had originally<\/strong><strong> committed,<\/strong> but the exact figure will hinge on if, and by how much, the government chooses to devalue the EGP. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#2- The IMF <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/21492e0c-4252-4e18-8696-f420040fffcd\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">downgraded<\/a><\/strong><strong> our growth forecast to 3.0% for the current fiscal year<\/strong>, down 0.6 percentage points from its last projection in October, in its updated <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/21492e0c-4252-4e18-8696-f420040fffcd\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">World Economic Outlook (pdf)<\/a>. The Fund also lowered its MENA growth outlook for the year by 0.5 percentage points, now expecting regional growth to pick up to 2.9% in 2024. The Fund pointed to temporary oil cuts in Saudi Arabia as the main driver behind the slashed outlook for the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#3- <\/strong><strong>S&P Global Ratings <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/544d13ae-78ee-4bf0-af44-34935958906c\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">thinks<\/a><\/strong><strong> the authorities will devalue the EGP by half<\/strong>, as part of efforts to unlock the remainder of the IMF package, the rating agency said in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/ratings\/en\/research\/articles\/240125-bulletin-red-sea-attacks-intensify-egypt-s-foreign-currency-shortage-12981068\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>. Once the devaluation is through, S&P sees the EGP trading at \u201ca level that is more in line with the parallel market rate, which is currently at about 60 USD \/ EGP.\u201d The rating agency thinks that \u201cmore clarity on exchange rate policy would benefit trade and economic growth and trigger an increase in remittance inflows.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>BANKING-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A new bank is in town: <\/strong>British multinational bank <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sc.com\/en\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Standard Chartered<\/a> \u2019s newly formed local arm <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sc.com\/eg\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Standard Chartered Egypt<\/a> has officially begun banking operations after getting the final go-ahead from the central bank, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/1\/2640.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement (pdf)<\/a> from the bank on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>** We sat down with the lender\u2019s Egypt CEO Mohammed Gad <\/strong>to discuss why Egypt, why now, and what the bank is hoping to achieve in its first year here. She has even booked a ticket for her and her father to attend Hajj to bring her redemption full circle until her mother falls ill and she has to pay her hospital bills. The Norwegian Fosse opens his first chapter with the protagonist, Johannes, being born and as a baby commenting on the process. The next chapters follow a unique stream-of-consciousness technique that shares the life of the protagonist as he tries to find his place in the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>If you\u2019re a fan of Camus\u2019 The Stranger, this one\u2019s for you. <\/strong>The sense of existential dread is present throughout the novel but what makes the characterization unique is how it delivers almost like a play. The characters come in and out as if they\u2019re on stage and interacting live in front of you. When you see a whole lifetime compressed into a few chapters, life and morality seem unimportant. It\u2019s nice to see Johannes navigate that dread so directly in writing that is just about mundane life. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Short but powerful: <\/strong>The novel is a quick read but will leave you with a lot to think about. Although nothing fantastical takes place, the writing is so beautiful (even though it is translated from the original Norwegian) and gives importance to the simplest of subjects. If you\u2019re looking for that home-cooked meal feeling, but elevated, be sure to pay a visit. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>With the buffet, you\u2019ll be spoiled for choice. <\/strong>Getting to curate what feels like a personal tasting menu as you peruse the many options is what keeps bringing us back. The meat corner is every carnivore\u2019s dream with the option of chicken, tender veal, or cuts of lamb. Right next to that is a sort of diy station that we make sure to frequent when it's a sharkaseya day. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>To go with the meat,<\/strong> there\u2019s an endless supply of mahshi, pasta, orzo, and a bunch of other tasty dishes. The one thing we\u2019d say isn\u2019t as impressive is the salad bar. Besides the bare minimum, there isn\u2019t really much to spruce up the greens but we do like the dressing options. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>To ease into the good stuff, there\u2019s plenty of appetizer choices. <\/strong>You can fill up your own bread basket for the table and dig into the mezzes. Oddly enough, there\u2019s even some sushi and sashimi but it\u2019s not the best option they have. We\u2019ll stick to the tahini and cheese. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>To wrap it up the dessert never disappoints. <\/strong>From Om Ali to red velvet cakes to konafa, it\u2019s hard to make a decision. But our favorite is the maamoul and basbousa paired with a nice hot cup of tea. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Bang for your buck: <\/strong>Zitouni is expensive, so it\u2019s best saved for a special night out or times when you feel like treating yourself. It\u2019s also perfect for a family affair considering how big the place is and how there\u2019s food for everyone\u2019s tastes. But if you\u2019re going for the buffet, which we much prefer over the menu, you can eat your money\u2019s worth and spend a long time working through it. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Aside from the delicious food, the view is captivating. <\/strong>Make sure to request a table by a window if you can so you can take in the Nile views. We like going right before the sun starts to set so you can see the river go from day to night while you enjoy your meal.
