On the domestic front, we got some clarity on progress made in the state\u2019s privatization drive and some strong indications that our USD 3 bn IMF loan may in fact be expanded. Our presidential elections also came to a close. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>DIPLOMATIC TENSIONS CONTINUED TO SWELL OVER ISRAEL\u2019S ASSAULT ON GAZA-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> #1- The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of a ceasefire in an<\/strong><strong> emergency meeting<\/strong>: More than three-quarters of the 193-member UN General Assembly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c5762675-dfd2-4cca-8a5a-3205a4e2501a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">voted on Tuesday<\/a> in favor of a non-binding resolution calling for an \u201cimmediate humanitarian ceasefire\u201d in Gaza. Meanwhile, Israel <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/fm-cohen-war-against-hamas-to-continue-with-or-without-international-support\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> it will continue its war on Gaza \u201cwith or without international support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The session, called by Egypt and Mauritania, saw 153 countries vote for the resolution<\/strong>, and just ten countries \u2014 including Israel, the US, and Austria \u2014 vote against. Twenty-three nations \u2014 including the UK, Germany, Italy and Ukraine \u2014 abstained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u2026and came after the US blocked a UAE-authored Security Council resolution last Friday<\/strong>calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#2- Egypt warned that attempting to displace Palestinians into Sinai could cause a<\/strong><strong> \u201crupture\u201d in the two countries\u2019 relationship. <\/strong>Egyptian officials reportedly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7a56dd0a-8a63-4aa2-8b0c-65935f7d8df6\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed concerns<\/a> to Israeli intelligence that its offensive in south Gaza could force thousands of people across the border into Egypt and threaten diplomatic relations with Israel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#3- Israeli air strikes <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9586acff-e2c9-4b8b-813d-a4464d9e96a3\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">leveled multiple areas<\/a><\/strong><strong> in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah launched<\/strong><strong> explosive drones and missiles at Israeli positions.<\/strong> The flare up came a day after Israel\u2019s national security adviser warned that Israel \u201ccan no longer accept\u201d Hezbollah on its border and will \u201cact\u201d if they continue to pose a threat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#4- At least 18.8 k Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since 7 October<\/strong>. Almost 51k <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/954e48b1-5a51-4bcf-a3d9-08024ec30bd5\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">have<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/954e48b1-5a51-4bcf-a3d9-08024ec30bd5\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">been injured<\/a> and 1.9 mn people \u2014 85% of Gaza\u2019s population \u2014 have been displaced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#5- Gaza\u2019s supply of freshwater is at risk:<\/strong> The Israeli military is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c5762675-dfd2-4cca-8a5a-3205a4e2501a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">pumping seawater<\/a> into Hamas\u2019s tunnel network in Gaza, which could endanger Gaza\u2019s fresh water supply.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>SOME NOT SO GRIM MACRO UPDATES-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>#1- The IMF <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/df8e1343-11a4-48a5-980f-ca9f9eb5ebc8\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">gave its most explicit indication<\/a><\/strong><strong> yet that it could agree to increasing the size<\/strong><strong> of Egypt\u2019s USD 3 bn loan program<\/strong>. \u201cIt is clear that additional financing will be critical to ensure the success in the implementation of the policy package for Egypt,\u201d IMF Communications Director Julie Kozack said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;text-align:left\"><strong>The exact amount is still to be finalized,<\/strong> but some unconfirmed media reports suggest that the loan could get up to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5a19a6a8-e2b9-4824-b891-129abf0dc6c0\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 10-12 bn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#2- A second month of encouraging inflation figures: <\/strong>Inflation <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a23e2e09-f05f-4f4d-b2cd-867786df738c\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">eased for the second<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a23e2e09-f05f-4f4d-b2cd-867786df738c\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">consecutive month<\/a> in November to reach its lowest level in six months thanks to a favorable base effect and slower food price increases. Figures published on Sunday, 10 December showed that inflation in urban areas slowed to 34.6% y-o-y last month from 35.8% in October.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#3- Private-sector workers making minimum wage will officially get a salary bump starting 2024,<\/strong> according to a decision published in the Official Gazette on Monday. From 1 January, the minimum wage <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9e541aa1-a231-4a7f-aac2-dc65c69a314f\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">will rise 17%<\/a> to EGP 3.5k a month (before taxes and social insurance deductions) from EGP 3k currently in a move announced in October to cushion the impact of soaring inflation on low-income households.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>OUR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS CAME TO A CLOSE -<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#1- Egyptians were out at the polls this week to cast their ballots in this year\u2019s<\/strong><strong> presidential election: <\/strong>The National Elections Authority (NEA) has completed receiving <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/2wkvy8aw\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">the vote counts<\/a> after three days of voting ended on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Local media reported overwhelming victories for incumbent President Abdel Fattah El<\/strong><strong> Sisi in several areas<\/strong>. This came after the Finance Ministry scrapped a rule that previously allowed them to pay in EGP provided they had evidence that they had exchanged an equivalent amount of FX.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>AN END TO THE SUGAR CRISIS IN SIGHT?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The government has introduced a number of measures to calm sugar prices in recent days<\/strong>, including a decision issued yesterday that extends an export ban for another three months until March 2024, in addition to making more sugar available to ration card holders. The Supply Ministry will also take steps to improve the supply of sugar and other basic commodities in the market, according to a cabinet readout on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e85e6761-fae3-4acd-9327-e62118539734\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Wednesday<\/a>. The statement didn\u2019t say whether the ministry would tap strategic reserves \u2014 which is now at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9e3d4b34-81a2-4cb1-8e78-f6fdd68b5415\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">almost eight months<\/a> for sugar \u2014 or import more to address the gaps. But the lawyer\u2019s daughter Amina (Amina Khalil), steps into the equation and brings out his soft side. The unlikely pairing team up when they realize they need each other, but little does Amina know, Raouf has a lot to hide. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;text-align:left\"><strong>What ensues is a lot of action, where somehow none of the hundreds of bullets being <\/strong><strong>fired at the heroes does any damage, <\/strong>and of course, a love story brews. Despite the sometimes cheesy action, where one guy can take down twenty others without a weapon, the movie has a lot to show for itself. The chemistry between Khalil and Yassin was palatable and really sold the narrative of fugitives finding comfort in each other. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;text-align:left\"><strong>What really took the cake were the random bouts of humor. <\/strong>We expected nothing less with cameos from Mohamed Tharwat and Taha Desouky, which provided some needed comic relief amidst intense action scenes. There were even a few quips by the ever so grim Raouf that had the whole cinema laughing. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;text-align:left\"><strong>But at its core, the movie is about seeking acceptance and a sense of identity. <\/strong>We realize that these two characters have more in common than they think. What actually brings Amina and Raouf together isn\u2019t the danger they\u2019ve found themselves in, but their shared troubles. Amina was a hardworking lawyer with no social life who sought out the approval of her father. Raouf, born out of wedlock, and having lost his mother, was seeking family and belonging. That\u2019s the beauty of the story. Tolkein could hardly go a few pages without including a song, and Return to Moria knows it.
