Until then: Enjoy the weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700;\">LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">It was a busy week on both the macro and privatization fronts last week<\/span><span style=\"\">, as <\/span><span style=\"\">the <\/span><span>government <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">unveiled its FY 2023-2024 budget<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> and as it looks to accelerate progress on the state privatization program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700;\">Some of the highlights include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#1- The government <\/span><span style=\"-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;text-decoration-skip-ink:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a3ab6ab6-4c7d-4e04-a322-4b5b202f592a\" style=\"\">now sees<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> the budget deficit finishing the current fiscal year at 6.4%<\/span><span style=\"\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">up from 6.1% in FY 2021-2022.  The budget document presented to the House of Representatives had forecast an \u201cadjusted budget deficit\u201d of 8.0% in FY 2022-23. Spending in FY 2023-2024 will increase 34% to EGP 2.99 tn on higher wages, borrowing costs, and subsidy allocations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#2- <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The country\u2019s debt-to-GDP ratio will rise to 96% by the end of FY 2022-2023<\/span><span style=\"\">, before <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">falling to 91.3% in FY 2023-2024. New borrowing is set to increase by 22% in FY 2023-2024, with the government expecting to sell EGP 2.04 tn in new treasury bills and bonds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#3- Some EGP 70 bn (USD 2.26 bn) are expected to come in through our privatization <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">program next year<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700;\">ECONOMY-<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#1- Inflation <\/span><span style=\"-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;text-decoration-skip-ink:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e8b89cdc-cf1e-4a57-bcf6-75cf185240d0\" style=\"\">eased<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> to 30.6% y-o-y in April from <\/span><span style=\"-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;text-decoration-skip-ink:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inktankcommunications.us9.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3f7bc576715ca1a70edef2788&id=29ad549bec&e=2a3f919c25\" style=\"\">32.7% the month before<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> for the first time in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">10 months in April <\/span><span>thanks to a favorable base effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, the stabilization of the FX rate, and a slight slowdown in food price growth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Expect it to pick up next month as the government hiked diesel prices by 14% <\/span><span style=\"\">raising it by <\/span><span>EGP 1.00 to reach EGP 8.25 per liter. <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d7838294-91d2-44d0-950c-e2af219a8d6f\" style=\"\">The decision<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> comes as the government\u2019s cost of purchasing diesel reached EGP 12.25 per liter due to higher prices in the global market and the EGP devaluation. Public transport fares grew by some 10% nationwide in response. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#2-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Fitch Ratings <\/span><span style=\"-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;text-decoration-skip-ink:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/39706d92-c6c9-4a7b-97e9-d3db6864c218\" style=\"\">downgraded Egypt\u2019s sovereign credit rating<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> for the first time since<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> 2013,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> relegating the country\u2019s rating to B from B+ and maintaining its negative outlook. The downgrade has been attributed to \u201chigh external financing requirements, constrained external financing conditions and the sensitivity of Egypt's broader financing plan to investor sentiment,\u201d the ratings agency said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#3- JPMorgan + Moody\u2019s delivered the latest warnings about the consequences of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">delaying reform:<\/span><span> Moody\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ea1f2ee0-de5d-420b-8030-37c9d8e2504c\" style=\"\">signaled<\/a><\/span><span> it could downgrade our credit rating for the second time this year if our external position continues to deteriorate, while JPMorgan <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8597dac1-86e1-4e5e-b647-170fc1c72810\" style=\"\">agreed<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> that delays on the state privatization program could weaken liquidity and noted that it puts into question the sustainability of Egypt\u2019s debt. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">On the bright side, JPMorgan said that Egypt should be able to seal a staff-level <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">agreement with the IMF next month<\/span><span>, putting us on course to getting board approval and the next loan tranche by the third quarter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700;\">PRIVATIZATION WATCH- <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#1-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The Sovereign Fund of Egypt <\/span><span style=\"-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;text-decoration-skip-ink:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2ad67365-7042-4cae-9df3-343bf0877aaf\" style=\"\">acquired<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> a 49% stake in pharma chain El Ezaby <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Pharmacy,<\/span><span> enabling the company to almost double its branch count to 600.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> The SFE\u2019s healthcare sub-fund and private equity firm B Investments are also setting up a pharma logistics and distribution firm in partnership with El Ezaby to offer logistics and administrative support and trade and distribution services to local pharma companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#2- Abu Dhabi wealth fund ADQ is reportedly close to acquiring a 20-25% stake in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Egyptian Linear Alkyl Benzene (Elab)<\/span><span> in <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/dd221876-b0a3-4992-9cad-c8b63eb535a8\" style=\"\">a transaction<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> that is expected to be completed by the end of this month. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#3- Progress on the TE stake sale?<\/span><span style=\"\"> The government\u2019s plans to sell a minority stake in <\/span><span>Telecom Egypt (TE) to investors <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d096a543-2634-4380-a12e-4d9beabd43f3\" style=\"\">look to be back on the table<\/a><\/span><span>, with reports saying that it could begin the process of selling a 10% stake in the state-owned telecom giant <\/span><span>this week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Selling at a discount: <\/span><span style=\"\">The government will be selling shares at EGP 22.25 apiece, a 3.8% <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">discount from TE\u2019s current share price of EGP 23.14. The former football player operated the small shoe store for several years before developing an interest in papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9, according to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/tamr-hena-museum\" style=\"\">Atlas Obscura<\/a><\/span><span>. AT THE MOVIES-<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> Director James Gunn goes above and beyond in the last installment of the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.<\/span><span> If, <\/span><span>like us<\/span><span>, you thought <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a2aeb45c-9efd-4abf-9a23-bd89e5f4e4fb\" style=\"\">Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania<\/a><\/span><span> set a disappointing tone for phase five of the MCU, you\u2019ll find hope that the future of the cinematic universe is in good hands in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 <\/span><span>(<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JqcncLPi9zw\" style=\"\">watch, runtime: 2:21<\/a><\/span><span>).<\/span><span> The most emotional of the sequels, Vol. 3 delivers \u2014 as predicted by many fans \u2014 a heart-wrenching plot with a bittersweet ending as the Guardians travel across galaxies to save their friend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">While some film critics are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">incomprehensibly <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/03\/movies\/guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-3-review.html\" style=\"\">bashing<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> the film, it currently boasts an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.4 on IMDB<\/span><span>. The film does not depart from the \u2018found family\u2019 theme that characterizes the trilogy, though Vol. 3 digs deeper by exploring those connections and giving them the context they previously lacked. This movie is, essentially, about learning when to hold on and when to let go, though Gunn, who also co-wrote the script, <\/span><span>doesn\u2019t seem to have a solid grasp on that concept yet, deciding not to give the Guardians a definitive conclusion to their story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">WHERE TO WATCH-<\/span><span> You can catch this movie in any <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/egy.voxcinemas.com\/movies\/guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-3\" style=\"\">VOX Cinema<\/a><\/span><span>, <\/span><span>Cairo Festival Cinema<\/span><span>, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.citystars-heliopolis.com.eg\/en\/cinema\/stars-cinema\/movie\/guardians-of-the-galaxy-s1_dyug4h\" style=\"\">Stars Cinema<\/a><\/span><span>, and pretty much any other <\/span><span>movie theater<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> across Cairo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Day 13 (<\/span><span style=\"-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;text-decoration-skip-ink:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SvbRXP-Qt3Y\" style=\"\">watch, runtime: 1:25<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">) is Egypt\u2019s first ever 3D movie\u2026 but that\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">pretty much the only good we have to say about it.<\/span><span> Unfortunately, the star-studded cast \u2014 which includes Ahmed Dawood, Dina El Sherbiny, Magdy Kamel, Sherif Mounir, and Jumana Mourad \u2014 was no match for the dire script. The premise itself is solid, with the plot revolving around a group of characters who band together to solve the mystery of the spirit haunting the protagonist\u2019s ancestral<\/span><span> mansion<\/span><span> in an attempt to expel it. While the acting is actually quite good all things considered, the plot has more holes than a sieve, and the heavy-handedness was inadvertently comical. Let\u2019s just say that one scene saw the camera zoom in on the license plate of a car that takes Dawood\u2019s character to the haunted mansion, and the plate spells the Arabic equivalent of <\/span><span>\u201cboo.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">But let\u2019s focus on the positive.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> For a first attempt at 3D filmmaking, what they\u2019ve accomplished is actually impressive. The effect worked well for the majority of the film, though not without some glitches.
