The offering drew significant demand from across Europe, Asia and North America as well as the GCC, including from new investors to Egypt. The issuance is the first in a three-year, USD 5 bn sukuk program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">#2- For the third week running, it\u2019s all privatization, all the time: <\/span><span style=\"\">It started with news that t<\/span><span style=\"\">he <\/span><span>government <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/19\/state-pharma-firms-could-offer-minority-stakes-within-six-months-97266\/\" style=\"\">wants to sell sizable minority stakes<\/a><\/span><span> in state-owned <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Chemical Industries Development Company<\/span><span> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Misr Pharma<\/span><span> to investors in the coming six months, likely in an IPO on the EGX. Later, we learned that <\/span><span>Italy\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Intesa Sanpaolo<\/span><span> is <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/21\/italys-intesa-sanpaolo-in-talks-with-govt-to-acquire-the-rest-of-alexbank-97499\/\" style=\"\">in talks<\/a><\/span><span> <\/span><span>with the government <\/span><span>to acquire the remaining <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">20%<\/span><span> of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Bank of Alexandria (Alexbank)<\/span><span> it doesn\u2019t own. The government also said it will offer a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">20% stake<\/span><span> in its new <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;font-weight:700;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/13\/the-states-new-hotel-company-is-ready-to-go-to-market-but-is-a-30-stake-enough-96639\/\" style=\"\">hotels company<\/a><\/span><span> to strategic investors, followed by an offering of 5% on the bourse, while Misr Life Ins. stake sale is said to be likely to go ahead by the end of 1H 2023. There was also an update on Saudi sovereign wealth fund\u2019s takeover of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> United Bank<\/span><span>: The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Public Investment Fund (PIF)<\/span><span> <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/23\/valuation-dispute-puts-saudi-united-bank-acquisition-at-risk-97677\/\" style=\"\">has reportedly hit \u2018pause\u2019<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> on talks for the acquisition due to a dispute over its valuation following the devaluation of the EGP, which has lost almost half its value over the past year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">ON THE M&A FRONT-<\/span><span style=\"\"> Saudi dairy producer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Almarai <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/23\/almarai-now-owns-100-of-beyti-97678\/\" style=\"\">has bought<\/a><\/span><span style=\"\"> PepsiCo\u2019s entire <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">48%<\/span><span style=\"\"> stake in <\/span><span>the parent company of juice and dairy producer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Beyti <\/span><span>for SAR 255 mn (c. Not only has it proven that it can <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2022.12.19.22283643v2\" style=\"\">pass graduate-level exams<\/a><\/span><span> in fields including medicine and business, it has also shown it can save workers time and make some business processes more efficient. What industries are actually using it \u2014 and how is it faring so far? In other words, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">is AI really coming for our jobs?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">  <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Refresher: <\/span><span style=\"\">Ever since ChatGPT went viral, workers in virtually every field have started to panic <\/span><span>about their jobs potentially becoming obsolete. It\u2019s not just blue-collar work: Futurists used to worry that AI and robotics would put blue-collar workers out of jobs. But the first jobs that AI is set to disrupt are comparatively creative, (typically) higher-paid jobs held by college-educated, white-collar workers \u2014 the very jobs that were previously thought to be largely immune to developing technologies and automation, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2023\/01\/chatgpt-ai-economy-automation-jobs\/672767\/\" style=\"\">the Atlantic<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> writes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">By the numbers: <\/span><span style=\"\">Nearly a third of white-collar employees in different industries have tried using <\/span><span>ChatGPT and other AI-based tools at work, according to a recent Fishbowl <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishbowlapp.com\/insights\/chatgpt-sees-strong-early-adoption-in-the-workplace\/\" style=\"\">survey<\/a><\/span><span>. Marketing and advertising professionals reported the highest adoption rate at 37%, followed by tech (35%), and consulting (30%). Some are clad in overalls and rain boots, others in their \u2018emmas and galabeyas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Their weapon of choice: the water hose<\/span><span style=\"\">, which they wield in fulfillment of their duties at any <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">cost \u2014 \u2018til the last drop of water in the nation, if need be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">That hose is magic, a time machine of sorts<\/span><span style=\"\">, transforming Abu Ahmed and his comrades into <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">schoolkids armed with water guns \u2014 running wild and out of control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">They hop from one car to the next, our aquamen do, making sure our cars shine bright <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">like diamonds.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Never mind that Rihanna didn\u2019t have cars in mind \u2014 or that we live in Cairo, where a trip from my house to my mothers\u2019 (a 15 minute drive) leaves my sparkly clean car covered in enough dust to serve as a canvas on which school children can leave me sweet messages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">As the good people at the nation\u2019s water utility companies can tell us, the waste doesn\u2019t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">stop there:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Once the cars are washed, our friends turn their weapons on our dusty streets and sidewalks, filling holes in our uneven roads as if to make up for the lack of rain. The result? Wonderful water puddles through which cars can splash unapologetically, soaking pedestrians left and right. Day after day, the puddles erode the pavement, enlarging potholes that never seem to be fixed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"\">(If there\u2019s one lesson we\u2019ve learned in recent years, it\u2019s that bridges are seemingly easier to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">build than roads are to pave. The last significant stretch of pavement to be resurfaced in Maadi, at least, was pre-2011.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">As a self-appointed member of the Water Waste Patrol, I do my best to keep order in my <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">neighborhood<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> \u2014 terrifying men quadruple my size as I urge them to drop the hose. Heck, I can extract a confession from some without lifting a finger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">\u201cThe hose is the holy grail of the perfect wash,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"\"> Abu Ahmed brags when I ask him why he\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">using so much H2O. \u201cThe bucket or the cloth alone gives the car a depressed shine that shows I did my job half-heartedly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">A few blocks over: \u201cThe streets need tarteeb<\/span><span style=\"\"> (hydration) \u2014 water breathes life into our dead <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">streets just like when you take a sip to revive yourself on a hot day. We never run out of water. We\u2019re sons of the Nile River,\u201d says Amm Salama, the king of moisturizing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">  <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Amm Salama is absolutely right \u2014 the Nile breathes life into our nation. <\/span><span style=\"\">Without it, we <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">would be pure desert. It provides water for drinking, fishing, agriculture \u2014 nourishing this great civilization that it created in the first place. The problem is that our ancestors would be rolling in their sarcophagi if they could see how we waste our bounty. The Pharaohs were mindful of their resources, treasuring the Nile like no one else. If Amm Salam had wasted water on the Volvos and Mercedes of their time, they\u2019d have thrown him (not a virgin) into the river as a sacrifice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">State officials have been telling us for years that we\u2019re in the midst of a crisis \u2014 an era of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">water poverty<\/span><span>, generally defined as a per-capita share of water now less than 1k cubic meters per year. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">How bad is it here in Egypt? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">As the planet continues to warm, we have just 550-560 cubic meters per person per year \u2014 and it\u2019s getting worse. Is it any wonder that the state is now spending bns to line canals? To move us to less water-intensive forms of agriculture? Or that we\u2019re losing our collective [redacted] about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam? Three-way talks between Cairo, Khartoum and Addis Ababa remain stalemated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The price tag is huge: <\/span><span style=\"\">The state\u2019s 20-year program to push into desalination, expand wastewater<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> treatment, and move to modern irrigation methods is going to cost (at a bare minimum) USD 50 bn over 20 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The stakes are high: Water poverty and food security are two sides of the same coin. <\/span><span style=\"\">And <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">as an import-reliant nation, we import as much as 54% of our \u201ctotal\u201d water needs \u2014 virtual water embedded in the commodities we buy on global markets. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The water deficit is stark<\/span><span style=\"\">, according to the ministry of irrigation and water resources: We need <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">nearly 114 bn cubic meters of water a year, and our overall share from the Nile is no more than 55 bn, implying a deficit of more than 60 bn cubic meters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">And there\u2019s just one thing we can do immediately (and at zero cost): Ban Abu Ahmed and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">his buddies from using water hoses. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Make it illegal for shop owners to douse the sidewalks and streets in front of their shops. Crack down on gardeners who let hoses run for hours on tiny strips of land. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">We wouldn\u2019t be alone: <\/span><span style=\"\">From the United States to the United Kingdom, governments facing <\/span><span>drought have implemented water patrols (and fines) to clamp down on banned forms of irrigation, overwatering, overspraying, and the hosing down of hard surfaces. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">And in nations of snitches, neighbors are being prompted to rat each other out <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">if they catch someone breaking a ban. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The punishments? <\/span><span style=\"\">First-time violators usually receive a warning. In the UK, folks using water <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">hoses during periods of bans face fines of up to GBP 1k.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The worst of it is, we have had similar regulations on our books \u2014 we just don\u2019t enforce <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">them. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Years back, the governor of Cairo and local district council officials rolled up their sleeves and worked with other authorities to clamp down on the wasting of water. They combed streets for shop owners and residents mismanaging water. They trumpeted the daily number of violators they busted \u2014 and, inevitably, their campaign ran out of steam. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Consistency breeds results \u2014 and the on-and-off approach to addressing our nation\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">water crisis is a testament to its miserable failure.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> The selective, partial, and inconsistent enforcement of the law is a chronic disease of our society. Fix that and we\u2019ll kick [redacted], as my Pilates instructor would tell you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Look, friends, you all know we\u2019re not fans of new taxes. But we also tell you regularly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">that the best way to get rid of unwanted behavior is to tax it. <\/span><span>The time has come for the authorities to ramp up what they charge everyone \u2014 every flat, every building \u2014 for water.
