\ud83c\udf2a\ufe0f Earlier this month, the <\/strong>World Meteorological Organization<\/a><\/strong> <\/strong> and the <\/strong>US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)<\/a><\/strong> issued some dire alerts.<\/strong> They\u2019re predicting an 82% probability of an El Ni\u00f1o event this summer, with a 35% chance that this climatic cycle could intensify into a rare and record-breaking \u201cSuper El Ni\u00f1o\u201d that could disrupt global food and commodity systems in a way that is worth closely monitoring over the coming months.<\/p>\n

\n

What is El Ni\u00f1o, and why should we care?<\/p>\n

El Ni\u00f1o, shorthand for El Ni\u00f1o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)<\/strong>, is the planet\u2019s most influential natural climate driver<\/a>. Think of it as some kind of atmospheric seesaw between two opposing phases that shift every two to seven years. <\/p>\n

La Ni\u00f1a is the cooling phase of this weather system.<\/strong> It\u2019s driven by strong easterly trade winds that push warm surface waters in the Pacific Ocean toward Asia, allowing cold, deep-sea water to well up along the South American coast. <\/p>\n

El Ni\u00f1o, on the other hand, is the warming phase responsible for the current climate shift we\u2019re watching unfold.<\/strong> It typically arrives when trade winds weaken<\/a>, causing the massive pool of warm surface water in the Pacific to slosh eastward toward the Americas. This shifting ocean heat then alters the jet stream (the high-altitude wind), upending weather patterns in the central Pacific and temporarily elevating temperatures around the globe. <\/p>\n

Double trouble <\/p>\n

But what makes it \u201cSuper\u201d?<\/strong> While a standard El Ni\u00f1o requires sea-surface temperatures in the central Pacific to rise 0.5\u00b0C above historical averages, a \u201cSuper El Ni\u00f1o\u201d occurs when surface temperatures surge to 2.0\u00b0C or higher<\/a>. So far, subsurface temperatures at depths of 50-150 meters have already spiked up to 6\u00b0C above normal levels, The International Research Institute for Climate and Society recently noted<\/a>. Meanwhile, leading climate models \u2014 including Europe's ECMWF<\/a> and NOAA\u2019s CFSv2<\/a> \u2014 project that peak anomalies could breach the 2.0\u00b0C \u201csuper\u201d threshold by the end of the year. <\/p>\n

We\u2019re nowhere near the Pacific, so how is this relevant? <\/strong>An intense El Ni\u00f1o is ultimately a systemic macroeconomic shock with consequences that reach far beyond local weather patterns<\/a> in the Pacific. By altering precipitation patterns globally, a Super El Ni\u00f1o can set off atmospheric instability that results in drought and wildfires in some areas around the world, and conversely, major flooding in others. Most alarming, however, is the potential strain it would place on crop yields, fisheries, and power generation around the world at a time when the world is already facing major energy constraints. <\/p>\n

For context, this is what happened during the last few Super El Ni\u00f1o events in recent history.<\/strong> Back in 2023, which was the most recent time we saw a super El Ni\u00f1o unfold, agricultural markets were severely disrupted. Before that, in 2015, we saw a Super El Ni\u00f1o event trigger the longest global coral bleaching event<\/a> on record.<\/p>\n

The impact on Om El Donia<\/p>\n

For Egypt, the arrival of El Ni\u00f1o introduces distinct vulnerabilities to water, fiscal stability, and energy infrastructure.<\/strong> El Ni\u00f1o has historically been correlated with erratic monsoon rainfall<\/a> over the Ethiopian Highlands, which supplies over 80% of Egypt's freshwater, and poses a potential threat to the Nile\u2019s inflows through the country. As the world\u2019s largest wheat importer, we\u2019re also uniquely exposed to international agricultural disruption. If an intense El Ni\u00f1o cripples grain yields in major exporting regions like Australia or the Americas, the state budget might have to wrestle with rising global commodity prices while dealing with an already inflated import bill. <\/p>\n

The risks don\u2019t end there. <\/strong>Since El Ni\u00f1o events amplify baseline global warming, we could be looking at an even hotter summer than anticipated \u2014 which means blasting ACs. That would place even deeper pressure<\/a> on Egypt's natural gas supplies and power infrastructure, already reeling from the fallout of the US and Israel\u2019s war on Iran, to keep up with excess demand.<\/p>\n

The bottom line: <\/strong>The upcoming ENSO cycle is a lot more serious than its name suggests. A Super El Ni\u00f1o presents a complex risk-management conundrum for governments and vulnerable populations around the world. For Egyptian policymakers and businesses alike, proactive planning across agricultural supply chains, energy reserves, and water management \u2014 which in some cases has already popped up on policymakers\u2019 radar<\/a> \u2014 will be essential to buffer the domestic economy from this looming Pacific shock.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
