ECONOMY-<\/strong><\/p>\n

The<\/strong> Monetary Policy Committee decided to leave interest rates unchanged<\/strong> for the second time in a row at its meeting yesterday, according to a statement<\/a> from the Central Bank of Egypt. The bank kept the overnight deposit rate at 19.0% and the overnight lending rate at 20.0%, in line with the projections of the majority of analysts and economic experts polled by EnterpriseAM<\/a>. \u201cThis decision reflects the Committee\u2019s assessment of prevailing and forecasted inflation dynamics amid an unfavorable external environment,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

PRIVATIZATION-<\/strong><\/p>\n

Four state-owned companies have <\/strong>secured provisional EGX listings<\/a><\/strong> across pharma, fertilizers, and tourism. The companies are: Chemical Industries Development, Egyptian General Company for Tourism and Hotels, Misr Travel, and El Nasr Fertilizers and Chemical Industries.<\/p>\n

EARNINGS-<\/strong><\/p>\n

Financing platform Valu saw its <\/strong>net income surge 78% y-o-y<\/a><\/strong> in 1Q 2026<\/strong> to EGP 221 mn. The bottom-line growth was supported by a 40% y-o-y rise in gross revenues to EGP 1.52 bn. Valu entered Jordan in 1Q via soft launching one operational branch and onboarding c.15 merchants.<\/p>\n

M&A WATCH-<\/strong><\/p>\n

Raya Holding is <\/strong>edging toward closing the loop<\/a><\/strong> on the six-year-long <\/strong>Ostool<\/strong> divestment saga.<\/strong> The EGX-listed conglomerate\u2019s board approved to offload its 90% stake in Ostool Transport and Logistics to a subsidiary of Qalaa Holdings\u2019 EGX-listed industrial mining outfit Ascom Mining Group for EGP 641 mn.<\/p>\n

AND- Regional giant Magrabi Retail <\/strong>will acquire<\/a><\/strong> 51% of homegrown optical group Baraka Optics. <\/strong>The transaction will bring together two of the country\u2019s biggest eyewear family businesses under a single corporate umbrella, with roughly 50 stores nationwide.<\/p>\n

STARTUP WATCH-<\/strong><\/p>\n

London-based startup Dealfuze is <\/strong>launching an MEA-focused venture discovery platform<\/a><\/strong> targeting capital allocation gaps. <\/strong>The algorithmic matching platform pairs MEA founders with international and GCC investors based on sector, stage, geography, and traction metrics.<\/p>\n

INVESTMENT WATCH-<\/strong><\/p>\n

International lenders are <\/strong>competing to fund<\/a><\/strong> the USD 3 bn alumina refinery Egypt Aluminum (EgyptAlum) is building with Aluminium Bahrain <\/strong>\u2014 the largest alumina refining and production facility ever built in Egypt. EgyptAlum will fund half of the estimated cost of the project \u2014 around USD 1.5 bn<\/p>\n

NBFI-<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Central Bank of Egypt <\/strong>quietly tightened oversight<\/a><\/strong> on how commercial banks interact with non-banking financial institutions.<\/strong> Under the new rules, commercial banks are prohibited from granting credit facilities to non-bank lenders unless those entities are fully coded with the CBE and actively reporting customer data to both the central bank\u2019s information network and the Egyptian Credit Bureau.<\/p>\n

DEBT WATCH-<\/strong><\/p>\n

The International Finance Corporation <\/strong>signed a USD 40 mn senior loan agreement<\/a><\/strong> with Sawiris-backed beet sugar producer Nile Sugar Company<\/strong> to fund the cultivation of some 13.6k feddans of sugar beet in Minya alongside project infrastructure, machinery, and working capital.<\/p>\n

AND-<\/strong> The government <\/strong>raised the ceiling<\/a><\/strong> on its medium-term international bond program to USD 40 bn<\/strong> \u2014 up from USD 30 bn \u2014 on the back of recent sovereign credit rating upgrades. <\/p>\n

\ud83c\udf0d AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS- <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been another unsurprisingly packed week, with mixed headlines <\/strong>taking center stage \u2014 here\u2019s the rundown.<\/strong> The US-Iran stalemate continues with US President Donald Trump warning<\/a> Iran on Sunday that \u201cthe clock is ticking,\u201d writing on Truth Social that Tehran \u201cbetter get moving, fast, or there won\u2019t be anything left of them.\u201d <\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Trump decided to \u201cput off\u201d a <\/strong>scheduled strike<\/a><\/strong> against Iran<\/strong> following requests from the leaders of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. He threatened a \u201cfull, large scale assault\u201d if a resolution is not reached. A day later, Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guard warned<\/a> it could take the war \u201cbeyond the region\u201d if the US and Israel resume attacks against the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n

Beijing made headlines as the outcome of the <\/strong>US-China summit<\/a><\/strong> proved anticlimactic after failing to secure any commitments.<\/strong> A week after Trump\u2019s visit, Russian President Vladimir Putin <\/a>arrived<\/a> to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as Beijing attempts to establish itself as a peace mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and as a stabilizing global force. Xi warned<\/a> Putin that the world is at risk of regressing to \u201cthe law of the jungle.\u201d<\/p>\n

MEANWHILE- <\/strong>The World Health Organization (WHO) declared<\/a> the current Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern. The WHO stated that the outbreak poses a high risk of spread to countries sharing land borders with Congo. The rising death toll \u2014 currently at 131 according to the DRC\u2019s health minister \u2014 prompted<\/a> the US to invoke a public health law on Monday restricting entry from the affected region.<\/p>\n

AND- A shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Tuesday <\/strong>killed<\/a><\/strong> three people<\/strong> in what appeared to be a hate crime. Two teenagers were later found dead from self-inflicted gun wounds in a car near the mosque, with one of the weapons seemingly having hate speech scrawled on it. <\/p>\n

In AI news, Elon Musk <\/strong>lost<\/a><\/strong> his lawsuit against OpenAI <\/strong>after a US jury unanimously ruled that the startup was not liable to Musk for allegedly abandoning its humanitarian goal. And, Google and Blackstone plan to form<\/a> an AI cloud company with USD 5 bn in capital, scheduled to bring 500 MW of capacity online by next year. Google is also further integrating AI<\/a> into its search function, introducing AI agent Gemini Spark designed to function independently and act on a user\u2019s behalf. <\/p>\n

IN THE BUSINESS PRESS-<\/strong> Swatch temporarily closed<\/a> stores worldwide after huge crowds gathered for the Audemars Piguet x Swatch Royal Pop collection launch on Sunday. The closures were prompted by safety concerns due to chaotic crowds and queues<\/a> amid extremely high demand for the new AP collaboration launch. <\/p>\n

ALSO- <\/strong>We\u2019re<\/strong> inching closer to what will be the <\/strong>largest IPO ever<\/a><\/strong> after SpaceX filed publicly on Wednesday.
