Yet, why are cloud restaurants surging in popularity? For Egyptian chef and F&B entrepreneur <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chefwesammasoud\/?hl=en\" style=\"\">Wesam Masoud<\/a> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/wmasoud?originalSubdomain=eg\" style=\"\">LinkedIn<\/a>), founder of former cloud kitchen provider The Food Lab, it\u2019s all about cutting costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u201cThe reason why we have cloud kitchens is a response to the pressures of the OPEX of running a classic restaurant<\/strong>,\u201d Masoud tells EnterpriseAM. He notes that the rise of cloud restaurants in Egypt \u2014 and worldwide \u2014 was further accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw many F&B industry workers lose their jobs and establishments lose footfall. \u201cOne day, people woke up and realized, \u2018Wait a minute, I can still run a restaurant; I just don\u2019t have to serve people.\u2019 And so they did \u2014 they got rid of service and doubled down on operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Cost-cutting is indeed a significant factor<\/strong>, and for many, cloud restaurants are a mere <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2026\/01\/13\/how-pop-ups-became-a-fixture-of-cairos-food-scene\/\" style=\"\">stepping stone<\/a> toward a brick-and-mortar restaurant, as Egyptian F&B consultant <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/omnia.alsharif\/\" style=\"\">Omnia Adel<\/a> tells EnterpriseAM. \u201cI see these as a step toward opening a physical restaurant with seating, and to me, it\u2019s a matter of money \u2014 it\u2019s less expensive to operate. Avoiding the dine-in experience allows you to expand faster and cover new locations at minimal cost,\u201d Adel notes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But costs are not the only driving force:<\/strong> \u201cPeople want to get into cloud restaurants primarily because they don't have a lot of money to spend at the outset. They want to start quickly; they don't want to wait for a contractor to set up the place or a design consultant to come up with a plan. They want to be able to focus purely on the product and the menu, and launch \u2014 and start generating revenue much quicker,\u201d Massoud tells us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">It\u2019s not as easy as it sounds<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Cloud restaurants can hit the ground running at a much faster pace than their physical counterparts.<\/strong> Egyptian cloud kitchen platform <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kitchinco.eg\/?hl=en\" style=\"\">Kitchinco<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CU2rJQvLek4\/?locale=pt_PT&hl=en\" style=\"\">claims<\/a> it can take just weeks to get a cloud restaurant up and running, compared to the months or years it can take a traditional restaurant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Yet it\u2019s not a walk in the park to get them up and running. <\/strong>When contemplating opening a cloud restaurant in Egypt, you essentially find yourself at a fork in the road. The options are aplenty \u2014 do you go solo and run it independently? Or do you lean into the expertise of a professional cloud kitchen service provider?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Know your options<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>There are plenty of cloud kitchen service providers in Egypt:<\/strong> For years, Masoud\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thefoodlab.com\/\" style=\"\">The Food Lab<\/a> catapulted myriad brands into culinary fame \u2014 restaurants that have since expanded into multi-branch chains. Their origin stories? In the cloud. Cloud kitchen service providers in Egypt such as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kitchinco.eg\/?hl=en\" style=\"\">Kitchinco<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/foodnationmena\/?hl=en\" style=\"\">Food Nation<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chefshouse.co\/\" style=\"\">Chef\u2019s House<\/a>, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kokensegypt\/?hl=en\" style=\"\">Kokens<\/a> all exist to take the work off of aspiring F&B entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Operating on a kitchen-as-a-service (KaaS) model, these central cloud kitchens can handle everything <\/strong>\u2014 from daily operations, delivery, and recipe development all the way to actually supplying the food themselves and marketing your brand. What you're left with is your brand, your concept, and your recipes \u2014 and then you just wait for your cut. These models prove ideal for aspiring entrepreneurs who may lack the necessary technical expertise to efficiently run a restaurant, and those who may just be in pursuit of gain \u2014 no shame there. Yet when it comes to taking control of your own concept, that\u2019s where it gets tricky.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The starting point<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Have a vision\u2026 and a story: <\/strong>Before getting lost in the clouds, you need to ask yourself some pivotal questions: Who are you? Why are you doing this? Your story will be the heart and soul of your brand, and later in the process, who you are and what your business represents will be integral to the literal branding of your restaurant. Knowing your story and integrating it into your business plan bears fruit in the long run. \u201cPeople know the difference between what\u2019s real and what\u2019s fake \u2014 give them something to believe in,\u201d chef <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/peri.fooding\/?hl=en\" style=\"\">Perihan Saleh<\/a>, founder and head chef at Gracias, tells us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Test the waters: <\/strong>How do you make sure it\u2019ll all work out before making the leap? You conduct a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metheus.co\/insights\/the-importance-of-market-feasibility-analysis-in-market-expansion\" style=\"\">feasibility study<\/a>. Oftentimes, we might imagine our ideas as the greatest thing since sliced bread, but markets are volatile, and consumer behavior is unpredictable. Knowing your market, your competitors, and the industry\u2019s demands is a pivotal stepping stone\u2026and so is making sure your product is actually viable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Testing the dough: <\/strong>F&B entrepreneur Hassan Sabry, founder of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/itsweirdough\/?hl=en\" style=\"\">Weirdough<\/a> Cookies \u2014 a cloud bakery that has recently expanded with physical locations across Saudi Arabia and Egypt \u2014 notes that his very first move was to test every single one of the cookies he thought of. \u201cYou need to make sure your product works,\u201d Sabry says. \u201cWhen I started, I would just go to different bazaars and events and have people try out my cookies. We\u2019d see what works and what didn\u2019t \u2014 feedback was pivotal at that stage.\u201d Before taking the leap, Sabry would spend countless hours through the night testing out his recipes, sending them off to family and friends.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The objective here is not only to test the quality of your product but also whether it would fly with customers in the first place. <\/strong>Saleh notes how, in the early stages of her restaurant\u2019s conception, she looked for gaps in the market: offerings that fit her concept that she couldn\u2019t find elsewhere. She quickly realized that was a mistake. \u201cLook at what people like \u2014 don\u2019t look for market gaps, don\u2019t fill out what\u2019s missing. More often than not, there\u2019s a reason why these things are missing; people don\u2019t like them.\u201d Saleh tells us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>With Gracias, Peri initially began exclusively serving authentic Mexican tacos<\/strong>, given their scarcity in the Egyptian market, and was surprised that no one came back for seconds \u2014 it turns out, authentic tacos were missing from the market for a reason. This, however, might not be a one-size-fits-all scenario \u2014 many businesses have found success in filling market gaps left unattended by others, and the key here is market research. The importance of hands-on personalized research cannot be overstated: know your audience, conduct taste test sessions, amend, and repeat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Narrative, niche, and testing are just the start.
