The demand is there, what do we need to do to reel it in? <\/strong>That was one of the main questions tackled during the AmCham-ogranized Doorknock Mission to Washington that concluded just days ago. <\/p>\n

A packed agenda reflects deep engagement: <\/strong>The mission had a packed schedule in DC, including meetings with US government officials, think tanks, members of Congress, international institutions, and other events on the sidelines. The dozens of meetings held reflect an expansion of institutional outreach with decisionmakers, providing a platform to present Egypt\u2019s economic priorities.<\/p>\n

Looking at the glass half full: <\/strong>Discussions pointed to a growing view that current geopolitical and economic disruptions may create a significant avenue for Egypt to attract industries and companies looking to relocate. \u201cThe capital is actively looking for more stable destinations, and Egypt could be well-positioned if it moves quickly,\u201d President of AmCham Egypt Omar Mohanna notes. Data centers were highlighted as a key prospect, with Egypt seen as a potential destination despite energy constraints. <\/p>\n

To reel in those searching for a new home<\/strong>, we need to accelerate reforms, improve the investment climate, and offer greater flexibility.<\/p>\n

Connecting with the next generation of business leaders: <\/strong>In parallel, the chamber\u2019s Washington office launched a new Youth Committee \u2014 led by Ibrahim Rostom \u2014 targeting Egyptian students in the US. The committee will offer mentorship programs with chamber members, fireside-style discussions to share success stories, and practical avenues including internships and professional workshops. \u201cThe goal is to connect young Egyptians abroad with the business ecosystem and prepare a new generation of leaders,\u201d Rostom said.<\/p>\n

\n

Finance, reform, and competitiveness<\/p>\n

\u201cThe global landscape reveals a clear gap in export and investment support tools<\/strong>,\u201d Mohanna says, noting that while European countries rely on established export credit agencies, the United States has only recently reactivated its role through the Development Finance Corporation (DFC). \u201cThe US is only now returning through its development finance arm, with around USD 205 bn available globally on a first-come, first-served basis,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

DFC entry could be a game changer:<\/strong> \u201cOnce the institution enters a project, it reduces risk and effectively elevates the credit rating to AAA levels,\u201d AmCham member and former chamber president Tarek Tawfik explains. \u201cBut we need bankable projects and a regulatory environment capable of absorbing this type of financing,\u201d Tawfik adds, stressing that capturing these chances depends on having a pipeline of viable investments and the institutional readiness to execute.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re seeing reform progress \u2014 but gaps remain:<\/strong> \u201cThe IMF\u2019s assessment points to strong progress across several reform pillars, including monetary policy, customs reform, tax reform, and public finance management,\u201d Mohanna says. \u201cHowever, the Fund sees that key challenges remain in privatization and state divestment, the persistence of a large informal sector, and the lack of a level playing field,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n

And on the macro front: <\/strong>\u201cAchieving a primary surplus of around 2% reflects a marked improvement after years of consumption-driven spending,\u201d Tawfik says. \u201cPrevious policies that focused on supporting the currency without addressing inflation led to a depletion of foreign currency resources and created structural imbalances that took time to unwind,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n

Stable external positioning with technical challenges: <\/strong>\u201cEgypt\u2019s overall positioning remains broadly positive, particularly in how it is perceived by international partners,\u201d Mohanna says. \u201cAt the same time, there are still some technical issues that require additional expertise and policy work, including alignment with US automotive standards, which is now nearing resolution,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
