Egypt has built awareness among US companies that it can serve as a <\/strong>gateway to Africa. <\/strong>The next step? Turning awareness into agreements by bringing African governments and business leaders into the room to discuss and identify specific projects, sectors, and opportunities, VP of Middle East Affairs at the US Chamber of Commerce Steve Lutes said during a media roundtable at AmCham Egypt\u2019s Doorknock Mission to Washington, DC EnterpriseAM attended last week.<\/p>\n

\n

Location, location, location<\/p>\n

\u201cEgypt already has some things built in that you can\u2019t just create, and part of it is geography,\u201d <\/strong>Lutes said, \u201cYou can\u2019t move through the Middle East without having Egypt front and center.\u201d With geography and supply chains already working in our favor, companies were already \u201crethinking supply chains\u201d to ensure \u201credundancy,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Africa is where the pitch needs to become actionable<\/strong>, and the gateway narrative needs to be backed by a clearer business case and real pipelines of projects, Lutes said. \u201cI think we haven\u2019t really answered the why,\u201d he noted. This year\u2019s Egypt-US Economic Forum should focus on execution rather than broad messaging, he added, stressing the importance of pairing large sessions with \u201cone-on-one\u201d discussions to understand what this company is looking for.<\/p>\n

\n

Widening the zone<\/p>\n

Organizers are seeking to designate the forum as a US Department of Commerce Certified Trade Mission to significantly widen the pool of participating companies.<\/strong> The move could \u201copen the door to a lot of companies that haven\u2019t even ever stepped foot in Egypt, or maybe even the Middle East,\u201d particularly firms that \u201cmay have never went beyond\u201d their home markets and could use Egypt as a first entry point, Lutes noted.<\/p>\n

Which sectors hold the most promise? <\/strong>The Chamber sees strong potential for US companies using Egypt as a base in sectors such as logistics, construction, power, agribusiness, and services, Lutes said. The opportunity lies in linking these sectors to specific projects across African markets rather than presenting them in the abstract, he explained.<\/p>\n

Unlocking this opportunity requires more than positioning, including better identification of bankable projects and coordination across stakeholders<\/strong>, Lutes said. The focus should be on \u201ctargeted project identification and dynamic, multilateral commercial cooperation, alongside clearer pathways to financing and support tools,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

\n

What companies are looking for<\/p>\n

Companies prioritize predictability, regulatory clarity, and fair competition<\/strong>, Lutes said. They are looking for \u201ca level playing field,\u201d alongside \u201cregulatory consistency\u201d and \u201cclear and enforceable dispute resolution,\u201d with financing tools such as DFC and Ex-Im Bank also needing to be more accessible to \u201cbring more confidence, more clarity,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

A freetrade agreement is unlikely in the near term, but that should not delay incremental improvements.<\/strong> \u201cLet\u2019s be realistic and know that that\u2019s probably not in the cards anytime soon,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
