{"id":693549,"date":"2026-04-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/?p=693549"},"modified":"2026-04-15T04:20:44","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T04:20:44","slug":"ezz-steel-in-talks-to-set-up-an-industrial-base-in-algeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2026\/04\/15\/ezz-steel-in-talks-to-set-up-an-industrial-base-in-algeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Ezz Steel in talks to set up an industrial base in Algeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>S<\/strong><strong>teel giant Ezz Steel<\/strong><strong> could be lining up to build a USD 780 mn direct <\/strong><strong>reduced iron facility in <\/strong><strong>Algeria<\/strong>, according to a statement from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1CmPNJSm3o\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Algerian Investment Promotion Agency<\/a> and reports from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alarabiya.net\/aswaq\/companies\/2026\/04\/14\/%D8%AD%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%AF-%D8%B9%D8%B2-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%AA%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B3-%D8%AA%D8%AF%D8%B4%D9%8A%D9%86-%D9%85%D8%B5%D9%86%D8%B9-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AC%D8%B2%D8%A7%D8%A6%D8%B1-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%AB%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AA-780-%D9%85%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Arabic-language press<\/a>. The facility could produce as much as 2.5 mn tons of DRI each year with an annual sales value of USD 835 mn at current market prices. Ezz Steel declined to comment on a timeline or investment ticket for the project when we asked yesterday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Why Algeria? <\/strong>The US effectively froze Egyptian steel out of North America\u2019s largest market earlier this year by slapping a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2026\/01\/25\/egyptian-steel-faces-a-total-export-freeze-to-the-us-under-hiked-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">29.51% countervailing duty<\/a> on Egyptian rebar on top of the existing 50% rate on steel imports. A separate anti-dumping investigation into Egyptian steel production expected in May could add another 20-30% duty, leaving Egyptian producers bracing for a 100% tax wall. For several industry heavyweights, a shift to regional reconstruction projects in Libya or qualifying for EU green exports was the answer after losing one of the biggest hard currency corridors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Uh, Enterprise? What\u2019s DRI? <\/strong>Okay, we\u2019re going to get a little bit wonky here. It\u2019s iron ore that's been converted into a high-purity metallic form using natural gas instead of a traditional blast furnace. DRI is a key feedstock for electric arc furnace steelmaking \u2014 the route Ezz Steel already uses \u2014 and produces cleaner steel with a lower carbon footprint than steel made in a blast-furnace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0;margin: 0;line-height: 1.15;text-align: left\"><strong>Okay, then why Algeria? <\/strong>Algeria is sitting on cheap, abundant natural gas (the single biggest input cost for DRI production) \u2014 and producing there could give it easier access to the EU and low-cost feedstock.
