What gives?<\/strong> For starters, the EGP continues to move in ways that make sense, responding to inflows and outflows of FX. We\u2019ve talked a lot since the outbreak of hostilities about the importance of the policy maturity that the Madbouly government has shown in the past couple of years, and this is the number-one sign that it\u2019s real. <\/p>\n

<\/a> EGP WATCH \u2014 The EGP strengthened against the greenback yesterday, buoyed <\/strong>by USD <\/strong>1.3 bn in carry-trade inflows<\/strong>, a senior government official told us yesterday. One USD was going for 52.47 at state-owned lenders NBE and Banque Misr and for USD 52.55 at private-sector giant CIB. <\/p>\n

Keep an eye on that USD 1.3 bn figure \u2014 it\u2019s the biggest one-day inflow since late <\/strong>February<\/strong>, just before the outbreak of war in the Gulf. The interbank market was healthy yesterday, with some USD 475 mn in FX changing hands, we\u2019re told. <\/p>\n

\n

INVESTMENT\u2014 <\/strong>Cairo <\/strong>will play host to the next<\/a><\/strong> Egypt-US Economic Forum in June 2026<\/strong>, the Foreign Ministry said after Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met in Washington, DC, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The pair also discussed the security situations in Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan, the Horn of Africa, as well as water security. The statement gave no additional color <\/strong>on the business summit. <\/p>\n

INVESTMENT \u2014 It looks like Chuck E. Cheese is a rodent with ambition<\/strong>. Saudi Arabia\u2019s Safari Group will invest up to EGP 2 bn to launch seven Chuck-branded entertainment centers here over the next four years, according to remarks attributed to company CEO Ali Saleh Al Sagri<\/a>. Safari Group\u2019s hospitality unit, Unique Hospitality Company<\/a>, and Egypt\u2019s PMaestro<\/a> will handle management and operations.<\/p>\n

\n

<\/a> STATE SPENDING \u2014 The Madbouly government wants you to know <\/strong>that <\/strong>it\u2019s not backing away from its pledge to enforce tighter financial discipline<\/strong>, with a senior official telling us the Finance Ministry will settle some EGP 308 bn in direct borrowing and overdrafts from the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) by the end of the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n

Why it matters: <\/strong>The move closes the tap on the government\u2019s direct borrowing from the CBE \u2014 a long-standing practice now curtailed under our reform program with the IMF to anchor inflation and push the state to borrow from the market. \u201cBy settling this account, the government\u2019s total loans from the CBE will be fully settled,\u201d our source tells us, signalling further shift toward fiscal discipline. <\/p>\n

Where\u2019s the money going to come from going forward? <\/strong>Officials have been woking up a more diversified financing mix that includes commercial borrowing, bonds and other debt instruments, and better asset management.<\/p>\n

Sims-for-kids to boost parental oversight by late June:<\/strong> The Madbouly administration is looking to roll out sim cards specifically for children before 30 June 2026, according to a statement<\/a>. The effort will include secure internet packages that feature parental controls and age-appropriate social media restrictions, as well as collaborating with telecom operators to provide content filtering and parental controls via home routers.<\/p>\n

Stricter regulations on online life may also be in the cards<\/strong>. The administration is mulling efforts to curb electronic betting, currency counterfeiting, and digital addiction among young people. <\/p>\n

Data point<\/p>\n

<\/a> USD 1.3 bn \u2014 that\u2019s how much foreign energy firms are pouring into exploration <\/strong>a<\/strong>cross the country this year<\/strong>, Oil Minister Karim Badawi told the cabinet last week (watch, runtime: 11:15<\/a>).<\/p>\n

A major sticking point will be Iran\u2019s nuclear ambitions. Washington reportedly proposed<\/a> a 20-year \u201csuspension\u201d of all nuclear activity \u2014 not just a permanent ban of nuclear enrichment. Iran is holding out for a five-year suspension of work on anything nuclear.<\/p>\n

The US blockade of Hormuz has tankers stopping <\/strong>or turning around, the FT notes<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Pressure on Tehran is mounting<\/strong>, with Washington deciding not to renew a 30-day waiver of sanctions \u2014 set to lapse this Sunday \u2014 on Iranian oil at sea, Reuters<\/a> reports. The waiver has allowed roughly 140 mn barrels of oil to reach global markets.<\/p>\n

Lebanon and Israel held their <\/strong>first direct diplomatic talks<\/a><\/strong> in decades on Tuesday in <\/strong>Washington<\/strong>, which the US State Department called a \u201chistoric milestone.\u201d Iran-aligned Hezbollah was not represented at the sit-down and has long opposed direct talks with Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n

MEANWHILE- US banks are <\/strong>breaking earnings records<\/a><\/strong> as 1Q financials come out. <\/strong>Investment banks capitalized on a volatile first quarter marked by US intervention in Venezuela and the war on Iran. JPMorgan Chase delivered its highest-ever topline figure, while Citi turned in its best quarterly revenue in a decade. <\/p>\n
