This long weekend, we\u2019ll be getting our fair share of R&R\u2026 and a lot of food. <\/strong>Aside from trying one of Maadi\u2019s hottest new pizza havens, we\u2019re listing our favorite restaurants and caf\u00e9s across Cairo where you can soak up the sun and take in the breeze. If you\u2019re hitting the cinema, we\u2019ve got you covered with two theatrical releases worth your time. All that and much more\u2026<\/p>\n

\n

\ud83d\uddde\ufe0f LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-<\/p>\n

EGX WATCH-<\/strong><\/p>\n

The ceasefire is already being felt in the markets<\/strong>, with the EGX30 up 4.1% by the end of Wednesday\u2019s trading, outperforming regional peers<\/a>. The EGP also gained around 2.5% on the greenback by the time bank tellers shut up shop for the day on Wednesday. Thursday saw the benchmark index rise an additional 1.0%.<\/p>\n

ECONOMY-<\/strong><\/p>\n

#1- Egypt\u2019s annual urban inflation accelerated for a <\/strong>second consecutive month<\/a><\/strong> to 15.2% in March<\/strong>, up from 13.4% in February, as regional conflict, higher energy prices, and a weaker EGP drove broad-based cost pressures. Monthly inflation rose to 3.2%, according to Capmas.<\/p>\n

#2- Moody\u2019s Ratings <\/strong>affirmed Egypt\u2019s Caa1 debt rating<\/a><\/strong> while maintaining the positive outlook it has held since March 2024<\/strong>, signaling that recent economic reforms are holding steady despite extreme pressure from the conflict in the region.<\/p>\n

#3- Egypt\u2019s non-oil private sector saw its <\/strong>fastest deterioration<\/a><\/strong> in operating conditions since April 2024 in March<\/strong>, reflecting a sharp dip in output and new orders that saw them both hit their lowest levels in nearly two years.<\/p>\n

#4- The gov\u2019t expects its financing gap <\/strong>to shrink to EGP 2.7 tn<\/a><\/strong> in the upcoming FY 2026-27 budget, down from EGP 3.6 tn in the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n

#5- Egypt is a \u201ctriple deficit\u201d economy, \u201ccombining fiscal, current account, and energy deficits<\/strong>,\u201d which leaves it highly exposed to the fallout from the war in the region, according to the latest Allianz Economic Outlook 2026-27<\/a>.<\/p>\n

M&A WATCH-<\/strong><\/p>\n

We may soon see a bank-led rush on the country\u2019s finance sector<\/strong>, as the Central Bank of Egypt expands the list<\/a> of companies in the sector that are exempt from a previous 40% cap on how much equity banks can own.<\/p>\n

PRIVATIZATION WATCH-<\/strong><\/p>\n

The government submitted listing documentation for five state-owned firms to the EGX. <\/strong>The proposed listings<\/a> include a 30-40% stake in El Nahda Industries and an expected stake of up to 20% in Egyptian Ferroalloys Company, alongside stakes in El Nasr Glass, El Nasr Mining, and Alexandria Co. for Refractories.<\/p>\n

AND- The EGX is set to receive listing applications for six <\/strong>additional<\/strong> state-owned enterprises next week<\/strong>, a government source told EnterpriseAM, including Midar for Investment, Misr Reinforced Concrete, and Maadi Development and Reconstruction, along with two subsidiaries of the Holding Company for Tourism.<\/p>\n

FINTECH-<\/strong><\/p>\n

Instapay\u2019s year-old 0.1% transaction fee <\/strong>hasn\u2019t turned away customers<\/a><\/strong> as some had feared \u2014 but it has made the venture profitable. As usage continues to grow, the payment service has cemented its role as the bridge between formal bank accounts and the e-wallet ecosystem.<\/p>\n

ENERGY-<\/strong><\/p>\n

#1- The gov\u2019t <\/strong>agreed to purchase<\/a><\/strong> 3% of Libya\u2019s monthly oil output at international prices<\/strong>, with Libya agreeing to flexible payment terms, covering between 1-1.2 mn barrels per month.<\/p>\n

LOGISTICS-<\/strong><\/p>\n

#1- The Egyptian Customs Authority <\/strong>rolled out<\/a><\/strong> its fully automated export system this week at Ain Sokhna port<\/strong>, with plans to gradually expand across all ports.<\/p>\n

#2- The Transport Ministry is offering around 1.9k feddans of land for logistics zones <\/strong>across Sinai<\/a><\/strong> along the strategic Arish\u2013Taba corridor in Al Hasana, Baghdad, and Rafah.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\udf0d AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS-<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s headlines were shaped by escalating tensions between the US <\/strong>and Iran.<\/strong> On Sunday, US President Donald Trump threatened Iran with \u201chell\u201d<\/a> if the strait wasn\u2019t reopened in 48 hours. Amid the collateral global oil supply crisis, Opec+ <\/a>agreed to raise output<\/a> by 260K bbl \/ d for May. On Monday, Trump threatened to destroy Iran\u2019s power infrastructure<\/a> the next day, rejecting<\/a> Iran\u2019s 45-day ceasefire proposal. By Tuesday, he doubled down on his threats, warning<\/a> that \u201ca whole civilization will die.\u201d Oil prices surged amid the stagnant ceasefire talks and continued attacks across the Gulf.<\/p>\n

Right before the deadline, the two countries settled on a two-week ceasefire subject to a \u201ccomplete, immediate, and safe\u201d re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz. <\/strong>Relieved market reactions followed, as oil prices plunged<\/a> on Wednesday. However, an attack on Saudi Arabia\u2019s East-West oil pipeline<\/a> Wednesday afternoon and a barrage of Israeli missiles on Beirut yesterday threatened to unravel<\/a> the agreement, leading Tehran\u2019s lead negotiator to label any continued negotiations as \u201cunreasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n

IN THE BUSINESS PRESS-<\/strong> Pershing Square Capital founder Bill Ackman offered to buy<\/a> Universal Music Group last Tuesday in a hybrid tender and stock agreement to value the world\u2019s largest music company at about USD 64.4 bn. Meanwhile, in the world of AI, Tech giant Meta debuted<\/a> its first new LLM model \u2014 Muse Spark \u2014 since CEO Mark Zuckerberg launched a multi-bn-USD drive to bring on fresh AI talent.<\/p>\n

AND- In the feud between Anthropic and the Pentagon<\/strong>, a DC federal appeals court declined<\/a> to obstruct the national security blacklisting of the AI \u200ccompany. The move could block contractors who work with the Pentagon from using AI models by the startup. A separate appeals court had issued the opposite ruling in late March.<\/p>\n
