Over the years, \u201chustle\u201d culture and the unyielding desire to do everything, everywhere, all at once to achieve a semblance of a work-life balance have led us to forsake one of our most basic physical needs: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2025\/09\/28\/why-your-sleep-needs-a-schedule\/?repeat=w3tc\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">sleep<\/a>. Leisure time \u2014 or simply doing nothing to rest and recuperate \u2014 has become unjustifiably linked to idleness\u2026 and failure. So, why has a culture of shame festered around sleep, why do we feel guilty getting enough hours of it, and how can that change?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Yes, sometimes we\u2019re made to be ashamed of our sleeping habits.<\/strong> If you\u2019ve ever been told off for leaving an evening engagement early to get some rest or shunned by loved ones for occasionally missing out on plans to get some R&R post-9-5, chances are you\u2019ve come to associate a proper good night\u2019s sleep with a subconscious sense of shame. According to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/lifestyle\/relationships\/sleep-shame-how-to-fix-e93dad35\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>, obsession with \u201cproductivity\u201d is the culprit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The early bird gets the worm \u2014 or does it?<\/strong> Society often equates moral (and professional) value with waking up early and getting productive from the get-go, engraining within us the belief that if we\u2019re not up and running by the time the rooster calls, we\u2019re not our best selves. Thus, shame sets in \u2014 and with that, sleep becomes even harder. <\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">The roots of shame<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The culture of shame around sleep starts off early \u2014 much earlier than you\u2019d expect.<\/strong> A <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/399102815_Sleep_Shame_in_Adolescents_Mechanisms_Measurement_and_School-Level_Implications\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, which surveyed over 2k Chinese adolescents aged 12-18, found that adolescents worried that peers, teachers, or parents would judge them as lazy for \u201cwasting time\u201d on sleep, with 39% linking sleep to a lack of productivity and 27% equating it with failure. Of those surveyed, 58% said they have deliberately cut hours off their sleeping schedule to simply \u201ccatch up\u201d with their more productive, academically-leading peers. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>More so, they were found to hide the fact that they needed rest, fearing social pressure. <\/strong>In short, the study found that stronger shame led to poorer sleep quality, with 83% of participants sleeping six hours or less and reporting severe shame around sleep. In China, 78% of parents blamed excessive sleep on failure, leading to insomnia and burnout, the study further noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Hustle culture <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>As adults, we tend to fall victim to the same loop as well.<\/strong> Hustle culture \u2014 prioritizing constant work, busyness, and achievement above downtime \u2014 instills within us the belief that constant work is the only path to success. Productivity thus turns toxic, and ambition becomes a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.riazcounseling.com\/blog-posts\/how-hustle-culture-impacts-mental-health-the-real-effects\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">harmful compulsion<\/a>, according to Riaz Counselling. As things stand, the line between professional and personal lives is very thin, and achieving work-life balance is a Herculean feat as it is. In attempting to fill our calendars after hours to maintain social connections, we end up forsaking sleep. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Is social media to blame?<\/strong> Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and X, by heavily amplifying and romanticizing the idea of hustle culture \u2014 with influencers constantly posting about waking up early, maintaining a trove of side gigs, working constantly, and somehow still making time to fulfill personal needs \u2014 have made space for unrealistic expectations to take root. For the average Joe or Jane attempting to do the same, chronic stress, burnout, and bouts of depression soon manifest, and the inevitable failure to meet such expectations feeds the shame cycle, according to Riaz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\"> Revenge procrastination<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Oftentimes, despite being exhausted and with nothing to do, we might avoid sleep too, opting to \u201cdoomscroll\u201d on our phones instead.<\/strong> This is known as sleep procrastination \u2014 a desire to avoid sleep to \u201creclaim\u201d one\u2019s own time. This often manifests in individuals with highly demanding roles and comes as a result of a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/psychologynsw.com.au\/sleep-procrastination-why-we-stay-up-even-when-were-tired\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">perceived lack of control<\/a> over one\u2019s own schedule. If you\u2019ve had a long, stressful day, your cortisol levels carry over to your evenings, and you might find yourself seeking immediate gratification over rest, according to Psychology NSW. In turn, another cycle is set into motion, leading to sleep deprivation, which then leads to daytime fatigue and ultimately burnout.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>So, what can you do to avoid getting sucked into the sleep shame rabbit hole?<\/strong> Know that your need for sleep is biologically hardwired, and not a character flaw. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2024\/11\/08\/the-guide-to-a-good-nights-sleep\/?repeat=w3tc\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Prioritizing sleep<\/a> \u2014 regardless of societal or peer pressure \u2014 is of utmost importance. The equation of adequate rest with laziness or failure is but a mirage \u2014 and a fatal one at that.
