{"id":679109,"date":"2025-12-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/?p=679109"},"modified":"2025-12-29T06:44:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T06:44:19","slug":"extending-trading-hours-wont-give-the-egx-a-boost-in-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2025\/12\/29\/extending-trading-hours-wont-give-the-egx-a-boost-in-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Extending trading hours won\u2019t give the EGX a boost in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>We need to stop pretending that performative actions equate to good policy.<\/strong> No, extending trading hours won\u2019t increase trading volumes on the EGX \u2014 even if it will make us feel like we\u2019re \u201cdoing something\u201d and gives us the chance to pat ourselves on the back. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>How can we say that with such strong conviction?<\/strong> Two things: empirical research and common sense.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Research consistently shows that volume isn\u2019t a \u201cliquid\u201d that expands to fill a larger <\/strong><strong>container<\/strong>; it\u2019s more like a \u201ccrowd\u201d that needs a specific time and place to gather. When you increase hours, you don\u2019t necessarily create new trades \u2014 you just \u201cthin out\u201d the existing ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Case in point: <\/strong>When the London Stock Exchange <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afme.eu\/media\/0v0h5zxb\/proposalforreviewofmarkethoursineurope.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">extended the trading hours<\/a> of its International Order Book (LSE IOB) by one hour in September 2018, average trading volume went down compared to the FTSE100, volatility went up, and the bid-ask spread widened. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Other research from<\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S105905601830039X\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan<\/a><\/strong><strong> and<\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scirp.org\/journal\/paperinformation?paperid=89032\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Hong Kong<\/a><\/strong><strong> shows that extending hours rarely <\/strong><strong>creates a new \u201cpool\u201d of investors.<\/strong> Instead, it leads to the trading volume being cannibalized. Market quality also drops and, similar to the findings of the LSE experiment, bid-ask spreads widened and the cost of trading went up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>\u2026and what do you think happens to price discovery?<\/strong> It also suffers, of course. When hours are stretched thin, the market becomes noisier and more susceptible to price swings based on relatively small trades. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Efficient prices reflect the consensus of a diverse group of buyers and sellers. <\/strong>This \u201cconsensus\u201d isn\u2019t buoyed by extending trading hours. A wider trading window means that trades that would have been recorded during regular hours are simply moved to the extended period. The total volume can even dip slightly because of the lack of a critical mass of traders. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Heck, this even shows that reducing trading hours could be the way to go.<\/strong> Shortening trading hours has been shown to narrow spreads by forcing all participants to interact within the same narrow window. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Our favorite finance columnist, Matt Levine, who writes Money Stuff for Bloomberg, <\/strong><strong>goes to the extreme:<\/strong> He only half-jokingly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2021-10-06\/why-not-trade-all-night\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed<\/a> a 15- to 30-minute trading day, suggesting that hyper-concentrating all buyers and sellers into a single intense window would create the most efficient price discovery and highest liquidity density possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But, come on Enterprise, why are you so bothered by this? <\/strong>To be honest, this isn\u2019t a big deal \u2014 we admit it. And it\u2019s not even a major policy change. It bugs us only because actions like these mask the real issues that are hindering the growth potential of the Egyptian stock market. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Extending trading hours won\u2019t help the EGX<\/strong>, and neither is trying to get more individuals \u201ccoded\u201d and day-trading on apps while we\u2019re at it. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Only three things will improve the quality and volumes on the EGX:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol class=\"lst-kix_wn2iay4eae9o-0 start\" start=\"1\" style=\"padding:0;margin:0\">\n<li><strong>Continuing to ensure that international investors can enter the market and exit their positions<\/strong> without stringent capital controls \u2014 which is already happening;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Higher-quality paper with meaningful stakes in free-float<\/strong> \u2014 we need more Banque du Caire\u2019s on the EGX, and we need them to list stakes substantially larger than the 10-20% that seem popular right now;<\/li>\n<li>Government pensions, insurance, and other slush funds must become active participants in the market. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Corporate pension funds becoming a \u201cthing\u201d <\/strong>(think RRSPs in Canada or 401ks in the US) <strong>would help, too.<\/strong> But really: Make sure foreign institutions can get in and out. Get more, higher-quality names into the market with bigger free floats. And force state institutions to start investing in equities.
