THE BIG STORY TODAY-<\/p>\n

? The M<\/strong>adbouly government is preparing to introduce <\/strong>new electricity price hikes starting January<\/strong>, as the Electricity Ministry reviews updated pricing scenarios for the bills issued this month, a senior government official told EnterpriseAM. <\/p>\n

The proposed price hikes are expected to range between 15-25%<\/strong>, depending on consumption brackets, in an effort to close the gap between production costs and its end price, our source told us. <\/p>\n

Since <\/strong>August last year, <\/strong>electricity price hikes have been <\/strong>put on hold<\/a><\/strong>, with the government prioritising lower inflation and subsequent rate cuts over cutting down its energy subsidy bill. <\/p>\n

But with the outlook on inflation more positive, the government is returning to its plan to <\/strong>bring down its energy bill<\/strong>, our source told us. After October\u2019s fuel price hike<\/a>, it\u2019s now electricity\u2019s turn \u2014 and not coincidentally coming shortly after the wrapping of the ongoing IMF mission\u2019s visit to the country, which policymakers hope will lead to the final sign-off on our combined fifth and sixth reviews.<\/p>\n

THE BIG STORY ABROAD-<\/p>\n

? It\u2019s another calm afternoon in the global press, with no single story getting <\/strong>top billing. <\/strong>Among the stories getting plenty of ink:<\/p>\n

It seems investors have lost their appetite following their Thanksgiving dinners<\/strong>, with US indices, as well as tech stocks, including those of Nvidia, slumping in pre-market trading today. S&P 500 futures are down 0.7%, while the Nasdaq 100 has dipped 0.9% as of the time of publication. Stocks and bond prices have also retreated in Japan, with the Nikkei index falling 1.9% today amid expectations of an interest rate hike later this month.<\/p>\n

BTC, however, saw the steepest decline<\/strong>, trading at 86.0k at the time of publication, a 5% drop from late-Sunday levels. The decline reflects the recent volatility in global markets, perhaps most prominently caused by rising fears of a soon-to-burst AI bubble. OVER IN THE US-<\/strong> Luigi Mangione \u2014 the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson \u2014 is set to appear in a Manhattan state court later today. This will be the first in a series of proceedings where the legality of the evidence gathered against him upon his arrest will be assessed. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the charges issued against him, and his appearance in court comes months after two terrorism charges against him were dismissed<\/a>. Mangione still faces several charges, including second-degree murder, and is expected to face trial next year. (ABC<\/a> | Guardian<\/a> | Reuters<\/a>)<\/p>\n

ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD- <\/strong>Over 1k people have been reported dead following flooding and landslides across South and Southeast Asia, including in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka<\/a>. At least 502 have been killed in Indonesia, 355 in Sri Lanka, 176 in Thailand, and two in Malaysia, with mns displaced. The reported death toll is expected to rise as rescue missions continue.
