? <\/strong>David<\/strong> Szalay\u2019s Flesh has become the recipient of the 2025 Booker Prize in <\/strong>what is being heralded as an upset victory. <\/strong>The Hungarian-British writer accepted the award on Monday for his sixth novel<\/a> \u2014 a book that is the culmination of two decades of honing his stripped-down, no-frills prose.<\/p>\n

Flesh does more with less.<\/strong> The novel follows Istv\u00e1n from his teenage years in Hungary through military service, immigration to London, a dizzying rise among the super-rich, and an eventual fall. But here\u2019s what makes it unusual: Istv\u00e1n barely speaks. His favorite words are \u201cOkay,\u201d and \u201cYeah.\u201d Entire years of his life \u2014 including time in prison and serving in the Iraq War \u2014 happen off page. Yet somehow, this creates a reading experience that\u2019s both gripping and strangely moving. As chair of judges Roddy Doyle put it<\/a>: \u201cI don't think I've read a novel that uses the white space on the page so well. It's as if the author is inviting the reader to fill the space, to observe \u2014 almost to create \u2014 the character with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStylistically, Flesh is all bone,\u201d<\/strong> wrote The Guardian<\/a>, a sparsely worded but emotionally acute study of masculinity and male alienation. Istv\u00e1n becomes fascinating precisely because of what he doesn\u2019t say and can\u2019t confront. While the judges praised Szalay\u2019s commentary on how masculinity often \u201coperates as paralyzing indifference,\u201d they were especially drawn to the novel\u2019s examination of social mobility.<\/p>\n

Szalay\u2019s victory caps off an unusual Booker year.<\/strong> For the first time in recent memory, the 2025 shortlist<\/a> featured no debut authors \u2014 instead, it brought together established writers deep into successful careers, with the six finalists having written 41 novels between them. This marked a clear departure from recent years, which had increasingly celebrated first-time novelists and younger voices.<\/p>\n
